Privacy Policy

Who we are

Italy on Foot is operated by Deep Digital Ventures (“we”, “us”). This policy covers both of our sites: italyonfoot.com (our editorial website, newsletter signup, and PDF guide store) and app.italyonfoot.com (the trip-planning app). Where a section applies to only one of them, it says so. For anything in this policy, you can reach us at hello@italyonfoot.com.

What data we collect

  • Account data (app): email address, name, and password (hashed) when you create an account.
  • Trip data (app): cities you select, dates, priorities, bookings, generated day plans, and packing lists.
  • Concierge messages (app): conversations with the chat surface, stored to maintain context continuity. A large language model generates replies on our behalf; we don’t share your messages with third parties beyond what the model provider needs to generate a response. Photos you attach (a menu, a sign, a ticket) are sent to the model to answer that one question and are not stored: your history keeps only a note that a photo was attached.
  • Pass payments (app): processed by Stripe. We store your Stripe customer ID, your pass status, and when your access expires, but never your card number.
  • PDF guide orders (website): when you buy a guide on italyonfoot.com, our store platform SureCart and Stripe process your name, email address, and order details so we can deliver the guide and keep a record of the sale. We never see or store your card number.
  • Form submissions (website): what you enter in the contact form or the free-guide form (name, email address, and your message), delivered to us by email so we can reply or send you the guide.
  • Newsletter (website): if you subscribe to our newsletter, Substack processes your email address to deliver it.
  • Analytics: we use Google Analytics on both sites to understand aggregate usage and improve them.

How we use your data

  • To provide and personalise the service (trip planning, itineraries, day-of help).
  • To process and manage purchases (passes and top-ups) via Stripe, and to track when your access expires. Every purchase is one-time: we never charge you on a recurring basis.
  • To generate AI-powered trip plans and packing lists.
  • To improve the service based on aggregate, anonymised usage patterns.

Third-party services

  • AI processing (app): trip plans and assistant messages are processed by third-party AI services.
  • Stripe: payment processing for app passes and for PDF guide orders. See Stripe's privacy policy.
  • SureCart (website): runs the PDF guide store checkout and keeps our order records. See SureCart's privacy policy.
  • Substack (website): delivers our newsletter to subscribers. See Substack's privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare Turnstile: protects forms on both sites from bots; Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address to make that check. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
  • Instagram (website): some pages display our Instagram feed. When it loads, content comes from Meta, which may process technical data such as your IP address. See Meta's privacy policy.

Data retention

In the app, account data and trip plans are retained as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and all associated data by contacting us. Assistant conversation history can be cleared at any time from the assistant page. On the website, store order records are kept as long as accounting and legal obligations require, and contact-form emails are kept only as long as the conversation needs. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any issue.

Your rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by emailing hello@italyonfoot.com.

Cookies

In the app, we use a session cookie to keep you signed in. On both sites, Google Analytics may use cookies or similar identifiers to measure usage, and Cloudflare Turnstile may set a cookie while verifying you are human on our forms. The website also sets the technical cookies WordPress and our store need to function, for example keeping your cart during checkout. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
