Buried beneath a park opposite the Colosseum, the Domus Aurea was once Emperor Nero’s sprawling pleasure palace, infamous for its size, decadence and artificial lake. Today only a fraction is accessible, and visits are strictly controlled to protect the fragile remains. On a guided tour you walk through vast subterranean halls with painted ceilings, stucco decoration and traces of inlaid marble that inspired Renaissance artists when the ruins were rediscovered. Modern lighting and multimedia help you imagine how the complex once looked, with colonnaded courtyards, rotating dining rooms and shimmering gold. Because the Domus Aurea is essentially an active archaeological site, conditions can be damp and cool; comfortable shoes and a light layer are a good idea even in summer. This is a specialist visit best suited to travelers who already enjoy ancient history, but for those people it is one of Rome’s most atmospheric experiences.
