The Uffizi is Florence’s flagship art museum and one of Europe’s great galleries. Housed in a long Renaissance complex originally built for Medici offices, it now displays an unparalleled survey of Italian painting. Visitors progress chronologically through rooms of Gothic altarpieces, early Renaissance panels and High Renaissance masterpieces. Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera, Leonardo’s Annunciation, Michelangelo’s Tondo Doni and works by Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio are just a few of the highlights. Arched windows along the upper corridors frame views across the Arno River and the red-tiled roofs of the historic center, offering visual breaks between galleries. Because entry is via timed tickets and the museum is extremely popular, pre-booking is highly recommended, especially in high season. Plan at least two to three hours for a focused visit; more if you love painting. Early morning time slots and weekday afternoons often feel a little less congested than mid-day weekends.
