Florence’s Accademia Gallery is synonymous with one work: Michelangelo’s David. The original 5-meter marble statue now stands under a skylit dome at the end of a long corridor, and seeing it in person-complete with veins, tensioned muscles and intense gaze-is vastly more powerful than any photograph. Along the approach, you pass Michelangelo’s unfinished Prisoners, figures that seem to struggle out of rough stone and reveal his working process. The museum also houses a collection of Florentine altarpieces, early Renaissance paintings, and an unexpectedly charming gallery of plaster casts and musical instruments. Because the Accademia is quite small, visitor numbers are tightly controlled and queues form quickly; timed reservations through the official system are strongly advised. Many travelers pair a short, targeted visit here with a longer session at the Uffizi later the same day.
