Often compared to Versailles, the 18th-century Royal Palace of Caserta was designed for the Bourbon kings of Naples as a grand new seat away from the capital’s crowded streets. The main building stretches over 200 meters with more than 1,000 rooms, monumental staircases and richly decorated state apartments. Visitors typically start inside, touring the royal rooms, chapel and historic theater, then move out into the vast formal park. A central axis leads past fountains and cascades fed by an aqueduct to an English-style landscaped garden at the far end. Exploring the grounds can involve several kilometers of walking; shuttle buses and bike rentals may be available for those who prefer not to go on foot. Because the complex is large and partially exposed, comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are key. Many travelers visit Caserta as a day trip from Naples or Rome using regional trains, but it also works as a stopover when driving between regions.
