The Catacombs of San Callisto are among the oldest and most significant Christian burial grounds in Rome, stretching through a maze of ancient tunnels beneath the historic Appian Way. In the 3rd century, they became the official cemetery of the early Church, with tradition stating that sixteen popes and untold martyrs were interred here. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour, which is essential for both conservation and proper understanding of the site. Tours start in the shady gardens at the entrance, where the guide introduces the history of the catacombs, explains how early Christians excavated passages in the soft tufa rock, and discusses the function of these underground spaces for burial and memorial rites, not as secret worship places as sometimes imagined. Following the guide, visitors descend via stairs through layers of galleries lined with simple loculi (burial niches) and arched tombs (arcosolia) adorned with early Christian symbols and frescoes. Highlights include the Crypt of the Popes and the Crypt of Saint Cecilia, spiritual hubs for ancient pilgrims. Photos are not allowed underground to preserve fragile artwork and the solemn atmosphere. The catacombs are cool and slightly damp, so bring a light jacket and wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. Tours are in groups and involve uneven walking surfaces, making access difficult for those with mobility challenges, but staff can provide the latest advice. Many visitors combine San Callisto with a walk or cycle along the Appian Way and nearby ruins. Booking a specific language tour in advance is highly recommended, especially in peak season and on weekends.
