Opening Hours
The main Sentiero Azzurro sections that require a trekking card are usually open daily in good weather during the primary hiking season (spring to autumn), but specific sections may close without notice for maintenance or bad weather. Trail/card validity is by calendar day. Always confirm which trails are open, and the latest rules, on the official website before your trek.
Unlike a single monument, the Cinque Terre Card is a paid key to the entire landscape: it funds and regulates access to the iconic coastal paths and services of Cinque Terre National Park. The most famous hiking route is the Sentiero Azzurro, the sea-view trail linking the five pastel villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The most scenic sections, Monterosso–Vernazza and Vernazza–Corniglia, require a valid trekking card when open, and rangers check passes along the paths.
There are two basic card types: the Cinque Terre Trekking Card covers access to paid trails, park bus service, toilets at the village train stations, Wi-Fi hotspots, and discounts at some museums. The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card adds unlimited regional train travel between La Spezia, all five villages, and Levanto for the same period. Both options can be bought online or in person at visitor centers and Trenitalia stations in the area. Cards are personal and non-transferable; you must write your name on the card and carry photo ID.
Because landslides or bad weather can force sudden trail closures, always check the park’s official site or local info boards before setting out. During orange or red weather alerts, trail access and card sales are suspended. In high season, trains and paths get busiest by late morning, so early starts from La Spezia help avoid crowds and heat. The Cinque Terre Card also funds vital conservation, trail repairs, and erosion control in this fragile UNESCO-listed region. If your Italy trip includes even a day here, factoring this card into your plans is essential, it unlocks the best views while helping preserve them for others.
