The Castelvecchio Museum is typically open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00. The ticket office usually closes at 17:15. The museum is closed on Mondays, as well as on 25 December and 1 January. Castelvecchio is the main art museum of Verona and stands as one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in northern Italy. Originally built in the 14th century by the Scaligeri lords as a fortress on the Adige river, it later served as a barracks and underwent a renowned restoration in the 20th century by architect Carlo Scarpa. Scarpa’s interventions—combining floating staircases, sculptural plinths, and dramatic framings—are considered a masterclass in modern museum design.

The visit blends three layers: the original imposing castle with its crenellated walls and towers, Scarpa’s architectural details, and a significant collection of sculpture, arms, paintings and applied arts from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Among the highlights are equestrian portraits from the Scaligeri tombs, Gothic and Renaissance Madonnas, works by the Veronese school and Venetian painters, as well as early Italian panel paintings. A substantial collection of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour contextualises the site’s military past. Walking on some of the ramparts offers panoramic views of the Adige river and the iconic Ponte Scaligero, especially beautiful toward sunset.

Admission and time slots are managed through the Musei Verona system, which also serves other top sites such as the Arena and Juliet’s House. The museum is a short walk from the city centre yet sits slightly away from Verona’s busiest tourist areas, so it tends to be less crowded than sites around Piazza Bra.

Practical notes: the museum’s internal route includes steps and level changes, although some sections are accessible by lift. The castle’s thick walls help keep interiors cool in hot weather, making it an attractive destination for summer visitors. Allow at least two hours to fully experience both the collections and Scarpa’s architecture, which rewards careful observation of materials, space and light.
