Museo del Novecento is Milan’s flagship museum for 20th and early 21st century art, housed in the Palazzo dell’Arengario right on Piazza del Duomo. Visitors follow a journey through more than a hundred years of Italian and international creativity, starting from early 1900s movements and progressing to postwar experimentation and contemporary art. The collection has a strong focus on Italian avant-garde, especially Futurism, Metaphysical painting and Spatialism. Highlights include works by Boccioni, Carrà, Severini, Sironi, De Chirico, Morandi, and Fontana, displayed alongside pieces by international artists. One of the most iconic experiences is riding the spiral ramp to the upper floors and stepping into the room with Lucio Fontana’s large neon sculpture, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Duomo just outside.
The building itself is part of the visit. The rationalist architecture of the Arengario was reimagined for the museum and features spectacular views over the square. Permanent displays are arranged chronologically and refreshed regularly, and temporary exhibitions occupy dedicated spaces, sometimes with separate ticketing. Labels are generally in Italian and English, with multimedia supports, an education area, bookshop, and café available. Thanks to its central location, the museum can easily be combined with visits to the Duomo complex, Royal Palace exhibitions, or the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. As part of Milan’s civic museum network, combined tickets and free-entry days are sometimes available, offering good value for art lovers planning to see several museums. Museo del Novecento is an essential starting point for discovering Milan’s connection to modern and contemporary art and architecture.
