Take Autolinee Toscane line 7 from Libertà Porta San Gallo in Piazza della Libertà and stay on to Fiesole Piazza Mino, the terminus in the center of Fiesole. The ride is usually around 20 minutes and uses Florence’s normal urban fare. The detail that catches travelers out is the Florence departure point: line 7 no longer terminates at Piazza San Marco.
For Florence to Fiesole by bus, remember three things: go to Piazza della Libertà, use an urban Florence ticket rather than an extraurban one, and board line 7 displaying FIESOLE. Coming back, use the same line from Piazza Mino with LIBERTÀ on the destination display.
Where bus 7 leaves from in Florence
Older guidebooks and travel pages often tell you to catch line 7 in Piazza San Marco. That information is out of date. Since January 2025, the Florence terminus has been Libertà Porta San Gallo in Piazza della Libertà, following the opening of the T2 tram extension through this part of the city.
The current route is listed on the official Autolinee Toscane line 7 page. At Piazza della Libertà, do not simply board the first bus you see. The square has several transport stops. Look for the stop name LIBERTA’ PORTA SAN GALLO, then check that the bus itself shows line 7 and destination FIESOLE.
Getting to the line 7 stop from central Florence
- From Piazza San Marco: you can walk north toward Piazza della Libertà or use tram T2. The walk is short enough that waiting for transport is not always worthwhile.
- From the Duomo: walking north through the San Marco area is usually the simplest option. Allow roughly 15 to 20 minutes rather than trying to find a bus through the historic-center streets.
- From Santa Maria Novella station: tram T2 is useful. Take it in the direction of San Marco and get off at the Libertà stop, then follow signs and stop poles for the bus interchange.
If your accommodation is north or northeast of the center, you do not necessarily have to travel back to the terminus. Line 7 also stops at places including Don Minzoni Giordano, Mille Passavanti and Piazza Edison. For a first trip, however, boarding at Libertà removes most of the guesswork.
Which ticket you need
Fiesole is outside the Comune di Firenze, but line 7 is still covered by the Firenze urbano capoluogo fare. You do not need to calculate kilometres or buy an extraurban ticket for this journey.
As of 1 August 2026, the standard Florence urban single ticket costs €2.00 and is valid for 90 minutes from validation or activation. This fare covers the urban buses serving Fiesole as well as Florence’s buses and tram network. You can check the current price on the official Florence urban ticket page. If another website still quotes €1.70, it is showing the previous fare.
For a normal half-day visit, expect to use one ticket going up and another coming back. The ticket is time-based rather than tied to a single bus, so it remains valid until its 90 minutes expire, but a few hours exploring Fiesole will obviously put the return journey outside that window.
The easiest ways to pay
- Contactless on the bus: tap a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, phone or wearable on the contactless reader. Wait for the beep and the green confirmation screen. On urban services you tap each time you board.
- Paper ticket: buy one from an authorized seller or ticket machine and validate it in the machine immediately after boarding.
- Digital ticket: tickets are available through the at bus app and other approved channels, including Blink. Activate the ticket according to the instructions before or as you begin the journey.
- From the driver: onboard sales are a fallback, not the best plan. The current urban onboard fare is €3.00, sales depend on operating and safety conditions, and the driver is not required to provide change.
Contactless is particularly convenient for a solo traveler, but there is one trap for couples and families: one card or device pays for one passenger at a time. You cannot simply tap the same physical card twice for two people. Autolinee Toscane explains the system on its Tip Tap contactless page.
If you are using a paper ticket and the validator is broken, do not leave it blank. Write the date and time of boarding on the ticket with a pen and tell the driver. An unvalidated ticket can otherwise be treated as invalid during an inspection.
What happens on the ride to Fiesole
After leaving Piazza della Libertà, line 7 heads through the northern part of Florence toward Piazza Edison, then climbs through the San Domenico area before reaching Fiesole. Scheduled journey times vary through the day and traffic can add a few minutes, but this is a short suburban hill ride rather than a full-scale day-trip transfer.
Some of the stop names you are likely to see include:
- Libertà Porta San Gallo, the Florence terminus.
- Don Minzoni Giordano and Mille Passavanti.
- Piazza Edison.
- Several stops along Via di San Domenico.
- Mantellini San Domenico.
- Angelico Monte Ceceri.
- Fiesole Piazza Mino, the terminus you want for central Fiesole.
San Domenico is not central Fiesole. It is a legitimate destination in its own right, but travelers sometimes see the word Fiesole on a map, get off there and discover that the main town is still farther uphill. Stay on until FIESOLE PIAZZA MINO unless San Domenico is specifically where you are going.
Piazza Mino puts you beside the historic center, close to Fiesole Cathedral and within a short walk of the archaeological area and the streets climbing toward the viewpoints. There is no second shuttle required after the bus arrives.
How the return trip works
Go back to Piazza Mino and find line 7 displaying LIBERTÀ. Lines 45 and 47 also use Piazza Mino, so check both the route number and destination rather than boarding whichever bus appears first.
The return route is not an exact stop-for-stop reversal of the outbound journey because of Florence’s one-way street system. Among the return stops are Di San Domenico della Badia, Edison Volta, Volta Cure, Don Minzoni Pascoli, Ponte Rosso and finally Libertà Porta San Gallo. This is why memorizing the outbound stop names and expecting them in reverse can be confusing.
Schedules are divided by operating day. On Italian timetables, feriale refers to working-day service, sabato means Saturday, and festivo covers Sundays and public holidays. You may also see feriale escluso sabato, literally a working day excluding Saturday.
The summer timetable in force from 27 July 2026 includes very late service, with the final listed departures from Piazza Mino at about 01:25. Do not treat that as a permanent year-round last bus. Summer, winter and holiday schedules can change, so check line 7 in the at bus app or on the official timetable on the day you travel, especially if you are staying for dinner.
A useful habit is to check the return departures while you are still in Florence and again after arriving in Fiesole. Screenshot the evening options if you expect to have weak mobile data later. Getting back into central Florence after the bus
Line 7 finishes at Piazza della Libertà rather than continuing to the Duomo or Santa Maria Novella. From Libertà, tram T2 handles the last part efficiently. For Santa Maria Novella, take T2 in the direction of Peretola Aeroporto. For Piazza San Marco, use the tram in the opposite direction.

Luggage, strollers and reduced mobility
Line 7 is an urban bus, not a coach with guaranteed luggage storage. Autolinee Toscane allows each passenger to carry one piece of luggage free up to 105 cm when length, width and depth are added together, with a maximum weight of 10 kg. Bags must not occupy seats or obstruct doors and aisles.
That allowance is smaller than many airline-sized suitcases once all three dimensions are added together. Larger luggage has different conditions and may depend on a vehicle having a luggage compartment, which should not be assumed on a city route. If you are changing hotels with a large wheeled suitcase, a taxi is more dependable than hoping the next line 7 vehicle can accommodate it.
Strollers are allowed when they can be carried safely. Boarding is normally through the central door after passengers have finished getting off. An open stroller must use the designated space, with brakes applied and the accompanying adult holding it. Passengers using wheelchairs have priority for shared accessible spaces, so a stroller may need to be folded on a crowded bus.
Travelers who require a wheelchair ramp should plan ahead. Because line 7 travels beyond the Florence municipal boundary into Fiesole, Autolinee Toscane recommends advance arrangements where accessible boarding must be guaranteed. Its accessibility booking service asks for requests 48 hours before travel so that the vehicle and stops can be checked.
Mistakes that cause most problems
- Going to Piazza San Marco for line 7: use Piazza della Libertà instead. San Marco is now useful as a T2 connection, not the bus terminus described in older guides.
- Buying an extraurban ticket: Fiesole is covered by the Florence urban fare on this route.
- Forgetting to validate: buying a paper ticket is not enough. Stamp it after boarding. Activate digital tickets as required.
- Tapping one bank card for an entire group: one contactless card or device covers one passenger. Use separate devices or buy group tickets through an approved digital channel.
- Getting off at San Domenico by mistake: wait for the next line 7 toward Fiesole. If your urban ticket is still within its 90-minute validity, it remains usable.
- Assuming the bus you see in Piazza Mino goes back to Florence: check for route 7 and destination LIBERTÀ. Routes 45 and 47 head elsewhere.
- Relying on a remembered last-bus time: check the date-specific schedule, particularly on Sundays, public holidays and around seasonal timetable changes.
If the normal plan goes wrong
If a stop has temporarily moved, look for the Italian words fermata provvisoria (temporary stop), fermata soppressa (stop suspended) or deviazione (diversion) on notices attached to the stop pole. Florence road works can move urban bus stops by a block or more, so checking the official line page is more reliable than following an old map pin.
If a bus fails to appear at the scheduled time, check live departures rather than immediately assuming you are at the wrong stop. Traffic on the climb and in northern Florence can affect running times.
If you genuinely miss the final return departure, arrange a taxi back to Florence. Walking down from Fiesole is a pleasant daytime option on deliberately chosen paths, but it is a poor emergency plan late at night, when parts of the hill route have narrow roads and inconsistent pedestrian space.
