Buy at the station, from an authorized retailer, through a transport app, or skip pre-purchase altogether and use a contactless bank card at an enabled gate. A single urban ANM funicular ride currently costs โฌ1.30. For most visitors, Naples funicular tickets are straightforward once you know one rule: buying a ticket and validating it are separate steps unless you use Tap&Go.
The same basic system applies to the Centrale, Chiaia, Montesanto and Mergellina funiculars. The confusing part is choosing between a โฌ1.30 single ride, a โฌ1.80 integrated timed ticket, an app ticket and contactless payment.
Which ticket should you buy?
For a simple ride up or down one funicular, the cheapest option is the ANM corsa singola for urban buses and funiculars, currently โฌ1.30.
- โฌ1.30 ANM single ride: one journey on one ANM urban vehicle. Use this if you are simply taking a funicular from the lower terminal to Vomero, or vice versa.
- โฌ1.80 integrated 90-minute ticket: useful when the journey involves a transfer, such as funicular plus Metro Line 1, or transport run by another participating operator. The 90 minutes start with the first validation.
- โฌ4.50 ANM daily ticket: unlimited ANM travel until midnight on the day of validation.
- โฌ5.40 integrated daily ticket: the broader option when you need participating services outside ANM as well as ANM transport.
The important distinction is that corsa singola means one ride, not 90 minutes of unlimited ANM travel. Taking a funicular and then entering Metro Line 1 is a second journey. Buy the integrated ticket instead if the transfer fits within its validity period.
ANM publishes current ticket types and fare rules on its official ticket information page. Fares can change, so check again if your trip is still several months away.
Where to buy before entering the funicular
Ticket machines inside the stations
ANM states that self-service ticket machines are installed in all metro and funicular stations. This is usually the simplest choice if you want a physical ticket.
Look for signs such as Biglietti or Emettitrice automatica. Buy before passing the access gates. You do not need to hunt for a tobacconist before reaching the station.
ANM Points and staffed sales desks
ANM also has staffed sales points. Particularly useful locations for funicular passengers include the Centrale line’s Augusteo lower terminal and Fuga upper terminal, plus Montesanto.
Do not count on a staffed desk for a very late journey. Sales-point opening hours are shorter than the operating hours of some funicular lines, especially on Sundays. The station machines or contactless gates are better fallbacks at night.
Tabacchi and authorized retailers
Authorized UnicoCampania retailers sell transport tickets around Naples. A shop displaying Tabacchi, Punto LIS/Lottomatica, Mooney or another authorized sales logo may be able to issue one.
Some retailers now issue a thermal-paper receipt containing a QR code rather than the small traditional ticket travelers expect. For these printed QR products, ANM says the ticket displays its start and end validity and may require you to specify the origin and destination when purchasing. Check the receipt before walking away.
How to validate a physical ticket
A paper ticket sitting in your pocket is not enough. ANM requires passengers to validate their travel document at the start of the journey and keep it until the trip is finished.
- Buy the correct fare before passing the gates.
- Go to the tornelli, the entrance turnstiles.
- Use the ticket at the validator indicated on the gate. Depending on the ticket format, you may be inserting a ticket or scanning a printed QR code.
- Wait for confirmation and for the gate to open.
- Keep the ticket with you until you are outside the destination station.
Do not simply follow another passenger through an open gate because your ticket is already in your hand. Validation is part of having a valid ticket.
If the validator does not work
Try another appropriate validator or speak to station staff immediately. ANM’s passenger rules state that when validation is impossible, the passenger must mark the date and time of use in pen on the ticket.
Do this at the start of the journey, not after seeing an inspector. If staff are present, show them the failed ticket as well. Keeping a pen in your day bag is surprisingly useful on Italian public transport.
Using an app ticket
ANM tickets can also be bought through ANM GO, UnicoCampania and other supported mobile-ticketing apps.
The crucial step is activation. Purchasing a digital ticket does not automatically mean it is ready for travel. Open your purchased tickets shortly before entering the station and tap the app’s activation control. The active ticket then displays a dynamic QR code that can be read at equipped access gates or shown to staff and inspectors.
Do not activate several tickets at breakfast because you expect to use them later. Activate the relevant ticket when the journey actually starts.
Keep enough battery charge to display the active ticket throughout the ride. If you are arranging several transport legs around sightseeing stops, you can also organize the rest of your trip so you know in advance which journeys involve a transfer and which are simple point-to-point rides.
Contactless Tap&Go is often the easiest option
If you have a compatible contactless credit or debit card, smartphone or smartwatch, you can use the Tap&Go system at enabled funicular gates without buying a ticket first.
The sequence matters:
- Tap in at the entrance gate.
- Take the funicular.
- Tap out at the destination.
- Use exactly the same card or device for both taps.

Do not switch between your phone and physical card
This catches travelers out. If you tap in with Apple Pay, Google Pay or another digital wallet and then tap out using the plastic card linked to that wallet, the system can treat them as two different payment credentials.
Use phone-to-phone, watch-to-watch or physical-card-to-physical-card for the entire journey. Mixing them can produce separate journey records and extra charges.
Do not forget to tap out
The exit tap tells the system where the journey ended and allows it to calculate the correct fare. UnicoCampania warns that failing to tap out can result in the maximum applicable fare being charged.
A temporary bank pre-authorization may also appear before the final amount is settled. The actual transport charge can take a few days to appear, so an unfamiliar pending amount immediately after the journey is not necessarily the final fare.

Common ticket mistakes at the funicular
The most common mistake is buying the โฌ1.30 fare for a journey that includes a transfer. It is perfect for one ride from Augusteo to Fuga, for example, but it does not become a 90-minute pass simply because the ride itself is short.
Another mistake is buying a digital ticket but never activating it. An unactivated ticket in an app is treated differently from an active one. Activate before passing the gate.
With contactless payment, the equivalent mistake is tapping in and forgetting the exit tap, or changing from a phone to the physical version of the same bank card.
Finally, do not abandon the journey if a staffed counter is closed. Funicular stations have self-service machines, digital tickets remain an option, and enabled gates accept Tap&Go. If one method fails, switch methods before entering rather than boarding without a valid, correctly activated travel document.
