Pompeii Luggage Storage: Where to Leave Bags Before the Ruins

Use the Archaeological Park’s official paid bag deposit at Porta Marina or Piazza Anfiteatro. Bags, backpacks, suitcases and cases larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm cannot enter the excavations. For most travelers arriving on the Naples-Sorrento Circumvesuviana at Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri, Porta Marina is the simplest choice. Travelers arriving at the main Pompei railway station or staying in modern Pompei will usually find Piazza Anfiteatro more convenient. Pompeii luggage storage is therefore mostly a matter of choosing the right entrance before you start your visit.

The two official places to leave bags

The Archaeological Park currently lists paid luggage-deposit services at two entrances:

• Porta Marina, on Via Villa dei Misteri, on the western side of the ruins.
• Piazza Anfiteatro, at Piazza Immacolata, on the eastern side beside modern Pompei.

This is an important update if you have read older travel pages describing the cloakroom as free. The Park’s current visitor information says the service is for a fee. It does not publish the luggage-deposit tariff on that page, so do not plan around an old quoted price.

You will see Italian words such as deposito bagagli, meaning luggage deposit, and sometimes bagagli or guardaroba. If you cannot find the desk, ask a member of staff, “Dov’è il deposito bagagli?”

Choose the storage point that matches your train

Arriving at Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri

If you take the EAV Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento line, get off at Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri. This is the station most tourists use from Naples, Herculaneum or Sorrento.

From the station exit, follow signs toward Scavi and Porta Marina. The entrance is only a short walk away on Via Villa dei Misteri. Leave oversized bags at the Porta Marina deposit before proceeding through the archaeological entrance.

This is the cleanest arrangement if Pompeii is a stop between Naples and Sorrento. You arrive, store the suitcase near the same side of the site, visit the ruins, collect the bag and return to Pompei Scavi for your onward train.

Arriving at Pompei station on Trenitalia

The Trenitalia station called simply Pompei is a different station. Do not confuse it with Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri.

The official Park directions associate the Trenitalia stop with the Piazza Anfiteatro side of the archaeological site. The same entrance is also convenient for travelers using EAV’s Pompei Santuario stop on the Naples-Poggiomarino line. Trenitalia also offers the Pompei Link train-and-bus connection between Pompei station and the archaeological area.

If you are approaching from modern Pompei with a suitcase, use the Piazza Anfiteatro bag deposit rather than hauling everything across town toward Porta Marina. The Park’s official transport page is useful for checking which entrance matches your rail service.

Do not confuse Piazza Esedra with Porta Marina

Pompeii has three public access points:

• Porta Marina Superiore
• Porta Marina Inferiore, also called Piazza Esedra
• Piazza Anfiteatro

The similar names on the western side cause a lot of unnecessary suitcase dragging. The Park’s current visitor-services page specifically lists bag deposit at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro. It does not currently list Piazza Esedra for this service, even though older maps and websites may still say that luggage can be left there.

If your guided tour says “meet at Piazza Esedra,” do not automatically walk straight to that gate with a large suitcase. Deal with the bag first. Porta Marina is on the same western side of the excavations, so it is normally the logical deposit point before making your way to an Esedra meeting place.

The 30 x 30 x 15 cm rule is smaller than many travelers expect

The official limit applies to bags, backpacks, luggage and cases larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm. The 15 cm depth is the part people tend to overlook. A normal daypack can become too bulky once it is packed with a camera, water bottle and jacket.

Do not assume that “carry-on size” means acceptable. An airline cabin suitcase is far larger than the archaeological-site allowance. A substantial hiking backpack will normally be too large as well.

If your bag is close to the limit, measure it while packed. External bottle pockets and items strapped to the outside still make the bag more cumbersome. Bringing a small compressible day bag inside your suitcase works well: deposit the suitcase, then carry only water, sun protection and essentials into the ruins.

A simple arrival sequence with a suitcase

1. Decide which entrance you need before arriving. Use Porta Marina for Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri; use Piazza Anfiteatro when approaching from modern Pompei or the eastern rail connections.
2. Go to the bag deposit before entering the ruins. Look for deposito bagagli or ask staff.
3. Confirm the collection deadline. Ask “A che ora chiude il deposito bagagli?”, meaning “What time does the luggage deposit close?”
4. Keep the claim ticket or receipt somewhere secure. Do not bury it in the bag you have just handed over.
5. Keep valuables with you. Passport or ID, wallet, phone, medication and essential travel documents belong in your small permitted bag.
6. Plan to finish near the entrance where your luggage is stored. Pompeii is enormous. Ending your visit on the opposite side of the ancient city can create an annoying final trek when you need to catch a train.

If Pompeii is a stop between two cities

The luggage decision matters most when you are visiting after checking out of one hotel and before checking into another. The easiest sequence is usually to leave your main suitcase at the entrance closest to the railway line you will use afterward.

For example, traveling Naples to Pompeii to Sorrento works naturally through Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri and Porta Marina. Arriving there, storing your suitcase, returning to the same side after the ruins and continuing toward Sorrento avoids crossing modern Pompei with luggage.

What if you need storage outside Park hours?

The official deposit is designed around visits to the archaeological site. If you need to leave luggage much earlier, collect it substantially later, or store bags while doing something else in town, an independent left-luggage business near a railway station may fit better.

Private facilities around Pompei change more frequently than the archaeological entrances, so check the exact address, closing time, accepted bag size and collection procedure before committing. A shop described as “near Pompeii station” can also be near the wrong station for your train.

Do not book purely from the word Pompei. Confirm whether the location is near Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri, Pompei FS, or Pompei Santuario.

Late arrivals need extra margin

Showing up shortly before your admission time with two suitcases adds another step before the turnstiles. Leave enough margin to find the correct entrance, deposit the bags and deal with any queue at the counter.

More importantly, establish when you must retrieve them. Do not assume a bag desk remains open because trains are still running later in the evening. Park opening times and admission arrangements vary through the year, so check the official site for your date and confirm the collection time with the attendant when you leave the bag.

Reduced mobility and heavy luggage

Travelers with reduced mobility should pay particular attention to the station as well as the archaeological entrance. EAV currently states that Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri has specific accessibility restrictions depending on the direction of travel. Wheelchair users should read EAV’s current Pompei Scavi accessibility instructions before relying on that station for both arrival and departure.

A heavy suitcase also makes Pompeii’s uneven surroundings considerably less forgiving. Store it before sightseeing rather than trying to carry it around until somebody stops you at the gate.

The mistakes that cause the most trouble

• Bringing an airline carry-on to the entrance. Cabin-bag dimensions are nowhere near the Park’s 30 x 30 x 15 cm limit.
• Following an old article that says the cloakroom is free. The current official Park page describes the service as paid.
• Assuming Piazza Esedra currently has the same bag service. The Park presently lists Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro.
• Going to the wrong Pompei station. Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri and Trenitalia’s Pompei station serve different sides of town.
• Leaving the bag on one side and ending the visit on the other. Plan your route so your final sights bring you back toward your deposit point.
• Leaving passports, medication or train tickets in the suitcase. Put essentials into a small compliant bag before handing over your main luggage.

If you remember only one thing, make it this: choose your Pompeii entrance according to your arrival and onward transport, then leave anything over 30 x 30 x 15 cm at Porta Marina or Piazza Anfiteatro before entering. That small decision saves you from starting a long day among Roman streets with a suitcase and nowhere useful to take it.
