The train is usually the better choice for predictable timing and flexible luggage, while the airport bus is better if your accommodation is near Politeama, Via Libertà or Via Roma. For Palermo airport to centre travel, do not automatically choose Palermo Centrale as your destination. Both services make useful stops before the main station, and the right one can save you a long walk over Palermo’s uneven pavements with a suitcase.

The train and bus are both inexpensive enough that price should not be the deciding factor. Location and luggage handling matter more.
Where to find the train and bus at Palermo Airport
Palermo’s airport is officially Aeroporto Falcone Borsellino, with airport code PMO. You may also see Punta Raisi on older maps or travel information.
For the train: go down into the terminal basement
The airport railway station, now shown in Trenitalia systems as Palermo Aeroporto, is in the basement of the terminal. Follow the train and railway signs rather than walking outside looking for a separate station building.
The airport confirms that trains operate daily and that the station is beneath the terminal. RFI also lists barrier-free access to all three passenger platforms at Palermo Aeroporto. Travelers requiring formal assistance should arrange it according to RFI’s current procedures rather than assuming assistance will be available on arrival without notice.
Check the current departure board before descending to the platform. Airport services can have quite different stopping patterns even when both ultimately reach Palermo Centrale.
For the bus: leave Arrivals and turn right
Airport buses leave from the ground-floor Arrivals area. According to the airport, the stops are outside the terminal on the right and are marked with operator information. Look specifically for Prestia e Comandè for Palermo city.
You can buy tickets online or through the operator’s airport sales point. Prestia e Comandè currently operates the route every day, including holidays, and recommends reservations. Check its current Palermo airport timetable shortly before travel because road works and temporary traffic diversions can change intermediate stops.
Taking the train with luggage
Trenitalia currently advertises up to two airport trains per hour in each direction, although some periods have only one. The adult fare between Palermo and the airport is currently €6.80.
The important detail is journey time. A stopping regional train can take roughly an hour to Palermo Centrale, while the faster Genio Express services make only the Palermo Notarbartolo stop before Centrale and can complete the airport-to-Centrale trip in about 34 to 36 minutes. Check the individual train rather than assuming every departure is equally fast. The official Trenitalia airport page shows the current service pattern.
Regular stopping services may call at useful city stations including Palermo Notarbartolo, Lolli and Palazzo Reale-Orleans before continuing toward Palermo Centrale. That can make the railway much more useful than it first appears.
Which train stop should you use?
- Palermo Centrale: best for hotels around the main station, Ballarò, the southern end of Via Maqueda, parts of Kalsa, or an onward train.
- Palazzo Reale-Orleans: useful for the Norman Palace, Piazza Indipendenza and the western side of the historic centre. Check that your specific airport train stops there. RFI currently lists this station as not providing staffed assistance for passengers with reduced mobility.
- Lolli: potentially useful for accommodation west of the main tourist core, but check your hotel’s exact position before choosing it simply because it appears closer on the rail map.
- Palermo Notarbartolo: useful for the northern central districts and some addresses around the Via Libertà area. The fast Genio Express stops here.
Do not stay on the train to Centrale out of habit if an earlier stop leaves you significantly closer to your accommodation.
How much luggage can you take on the train?
Trenitalia permits passengers to carry luggage free of charge as long as it can be accommodated without obstructing or disturbing other passengers. There is no airport-style checked baggage process.
That makes the train the safer choice if you have two ordinary suitcases or luggage that falls outside the bus operator’s published allowance. You still have to move everything on and off the train yourself, so keep bags manageable and avoid blocking doors or aisles.
With a large rolling case, getting on is usually the awkward part. Once aboard, place the bag where you can keep an eye on it rather than leaving valuables in an unattended area of the carriage.
Train ticket validation: the rule that catches visitors
How you validate a regional ticket depends on what you bought.
- Digital Regional Ticket: it activates automatically at the scheduled departure time of the selected train. There is no manual check-in step.
- Paper regional ticket: validate it in a station machine before boarding.
- Tap&Tap: Trenitalia currently supports contactless Tap&Tap on the Palermo Aeroporto to Palermo Centrale corridor. You must tap both when entering and when completing the journey.

If your flight is likely to be delayed, there is little benefit in buying a digital regional ticket hours in advance. Trenitalia permits these tickets to be purchased until five minutes before the scheduled train departure, so buying after baggage reclaim often avoids having to deal with a missed selected departure.
Taking the airport bus with a suitcase
The Prestia e Comandè coach is especially useful because it continues through Palermo and lets you get off before Stazione Centrale.
Following the restoration of the normal Via Libertà route in July 2026, airport-to-city stops include Via Belgio, Via A. De Gasperi, Viale Croce Rossa, several points on Via Libertà, Politeama at Piazza Ruggero Settimo, Via Roma near Vucciria, and finally Stazione Centrale in Via Tommaso Fazello.
The published running time to Centrale is about 50 minutes. Treat that as a schedule rather than a guarantee. The train is insulated from Palermo’s road traffic; the coach is not.
Bus fares and frequency
The operator’s July 2026 information lists departures approximately every 30 minutes. The standard adult fare shown is €6 one way or €10 return. The same operator leaflet lists a higher on-board fare of €6.50 one way or €11 return, so buying before boarding can save a little money.
Airport departures currently begin at 05:05 and continue late into the night, with a scheduled final departure at 01:05. The operator notes some departure flexibility of around 10 to 15 minutes on its final late-night services. Always check the date-specific timetable before relying on the last bus.
The bus has a specific luggage allowance
This is where the bus and train differ most. Prestia e Comandè’s published conditions allow each passenger to carry one piece of luggage free of charge up to 40 x 60 x 80 cm and 20 kg, plus a small item that can fit in the cabin storage area.
Larger items that cannot fit safely inside must go in the external luggage compartment. The operator states that passengers place baggage there themselves and remain responsible for it. Keep passports, money, medication, electronics and anything difficult to replace in your small cabin bag.
If you have oversized luggage, several large cases per person, sports equipment or another unusual item, check the operator’s luggage conditions before relying on the coach.
Which stop is best for the historic centre?
Palermo’s historic centre is too large for “city centre” to mean one useful stop.
- Vucciria, central Via Roma and the eastern side of the old centre: the airport bus stop on Via Roma can save you from going all the way to Centrale and walking back north.
- Politeama and lower Via Libertà: take the bus to Politeama. This is one of the strongest reasons to choose the coach over the train.
- Norman Palace and Piazza Indipendenza: a stopping train to Palazzo Reale-Orleans can be very convenient.
- Ballarò, Palermo Centrale and the southern end of Via Maqueda: either service works well to Centrale.
- Onward train to Cefalù or elsewhere in Sicily: continuing directly to Palermo Centrale usually makes the connection simpler.
Before choosing, put your accommodation address beside the actual stops rather than comparing only “train versus bus.” If Palermo is the first piece of a longer trip, you can also organize the rest of your Italy route before deciding where an onward connection fits.
What if your flight lands late?
The bus currently gives late arrivals a little more breathing room than the railway. Trenitalia’s published airport service runs until shortly after midnight, while Prestia e Comandè schedules airport departures as late as 01:05.
Do not build a plan around the last train or coach if your flight is scheduled to land only a few minutes beforehand. You still have to taxi to the gate, disembark, pass any passport controls and retrieve checked baggage.
If public transport has finished, use the official taxi area at the Arrivals exit. Palermo Airport currently publishes airport taxi fares by city zone, including €39 for the Viale Michelangelo/Viale Lazio area, €44 for the Corso Calatafimi/Corso Vittorio Emanuele area, and €50 for Palermo Centrale/Brancaccio. Check which tariff applies to your exact address before departure. The airport keeps its official taxi information online.
With children, a stroller or reduced mobility
A family with a stroller may prefer the bus if the hotel is close to one of its central stops because it reduces the distance spent dragging luggage over paving stones. Remember that larger items may need to be placed in the coach’s luggage compartment.
The railway is attractive when you need more freedom with baggage or want the documented accessible route at Palermo Aeroporto station. RFI lists all three airport platforms as reachable by a barrier-free route and offers assistance services there.
The arrival station matters just as much. Palermo Centrale has passenger assistance and barrier-free routes to its platforms. Smaller intermediate stations do not all provide the same assistance, so a stop that looks geographically perfect may not be the best choice for someone who needs staffed help.
For an early flight back to the airport
The first city-to-airport departures are another reason to remember both options. Prestia e Comandè currently starts from Palermo at about 03:30, while Trenitalia lists the first train from Palermo Centrale at 04:00.
For a very early departure, check the airport arrival time you actually need before choosing accommodation. A 04:00 train is of little use if you need to be at the terminal before it reaches the airport.
Common mistakes that make this transfer harder
- Going to Palermo Centrale even though your hotel is near Politeama. The airport bus can drop you much closer.
- Assuming every airport train is the fast one. Genio Express services are much quicker than some all-stops regional trains.
- Assuming every train stops at Palazzo Reale-Orleans or Lolli. Check the stopping pattern on the departure board.
- Forgetting to validate a paper regional ticket. Digital tickets work differently, but paper tickets still need validation before boarding.
- Putting passports and valuables in the coach luggage hold. Keep irreplaceable items with you.
- Ignoring the coach’s 20 kg luggage limit. The train has more flexible ordinary luggage rules.
- Relying on a 50-minute bus journey before a fixed appointment. Palermo traffic can add time.
- Pre-booking a train immediately after scheduled flight arrival. Baggage reclaim and flight delays can easily consume the gap. Buying after landing is often simpler.
For most travelers with an ordinary suitcase, choose the train when timing matters or your accommodation suits a railway stop. Choose the coach when Politeama, Via Libertà or Via Roma is closer to your door. The difference between a pleasant arrival and a sweaty first encounter with Palermo is often not the vehicle at all, but getting off in the right part of the city.
