Italy eSIM Not Working: APN, Roaming and Dual-SIM Checks That Fix Most Problems

An Italy eSIM not working after you land is usually a settings problem rather than a dead eSIM. First make sure the travel line is switched on, select it as the phone’s mobile-data line, enable data roaming if your eSIM provider requires it, and check that the APN exactly matches the provider’s instructions. If you have two SIMs active, temporarily turn off your home SIM while testing. That isolates most problems within a few minutes.

Do not delete the eSIM and scan the QR code again as your first fix. Some travel profiles can only be installed once, so deleting a perfectly usable profile can turn a simple settings problem into a support request.

Start with one clean mobile-data test

Turn off Wi-Fi before troubleshooting. Otherwise your phone may appear to be online even though the eSIM has no working data connection.

  1. Open your phone’s SIM or mobile-network settings.
  2. Confirm that the travel eSIM appears and is switched on.
  3. Select that eSIM for Mobile Data or Cellular Data.
  4. Turn on Data Roaming if your eSIM provider’s connection instructions tell you to.
  5. Temporarily disable your home SIM.
  6. Switch Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off.
  7. Wait for LTE, 4G or 5G to appear, then try loading a normal website with Wi-Fi still off.

If that works, the eSIM itself is fine. You can then re-enable your home line carefully, keeping it out of the mobile-data path.

Why data roaming often has to be on

The word roaming makes travelers understandably nervous, but a travel eSIM may need roaming even though you bought a package specifically for Italy. Many travel products connect through an Italian partner network while the eSIM profile belongs to a provider based elsewhere.

Follow the instructions for the travel profile rather than assuming roaming should always be on or always be off. If the provider says it is required, enable Data Roaming for that eSIM.

The important distinction is between your travel line and your home line. You generally want roaming enabled only where the travel provider requires it. Keep data roaming disabled on your normal SIM unless your home mobile plan specifically includes Italian roaming and you intend to use it.

On an Italian-language phone, the setting may appear as Roaming dati.

Check which SIM is actually supplying the data

Dual-SIM phones can show both lines as active while using only one of them for internet access. This is one of the easiest settings to miss.

On an iPhone

Open Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Service. The wording varies slightly by region and iOS version.

  1. Under SIMs, tap the travel eSIM and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled.
  2. Return to the main Cellular screen.
  3. Tap Cellular Data.
  4. Select the travel eSIM.
  5. For troubleshooting, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching. This stops the iPhone from silently moving data onto the other SIM.
  6. Open the travel eSIM again and set Data Roaming according to your provider’s instructions.

Apple’s current international eSIM instructions also explain how to choose a travel line manually for cellular data. On current iPhones, two lines can remain active while only one is selected for mobile data.

If you want to keep your normal number available for bank verification texts or other SMS messages, re-enable the home line once the travel data is working. Keep its data roaming off and leave the travel eSIM selected for cellular data. Calls and SMS charges on your home number still depend on your carrier’s roaming terms.

On a Google Pixel

Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Google allows you to choose a separate default SIM for calls, texts and mobile data.

Choose the travel profile for Mobile data, then open that eSIM’s settings to check Roaming, Network and Access Point Names. Google’s Pixel mobile-network instructions show the current menu structure.

If you see Automatic data switching, leave it off while diagnosing the problem. You want to know that the travel line works by itself before allowing the phone to switch between SIMs.

On a Samsung Galaxy

Start at Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Make the travel eSIM the preferred SIM for Mobile data.

Then look under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks for roaming, network selection and APN settings. Samsung menus vary by model, carrier and Android version, so a roaming switch may be attached to one SIM on some phones and handled more broadly on others.

If you cannot clearly tell which line a roaming setting applies to, temporarily switch the home SIM off. That is safer than experimenting while both lines are active.

APN settings: do not guess them

APN stands for Access Point Name. It tells the phone how to route mobile data through your provider. An eSIM can register on an Italian network, display full signal bars and still have no internet because the APN is missing or wrong.

Use only the APN supplied with your particular eSIM. Do not copy a TIM, Vodafone, WINDTRE or other Italian carrier APN from a random website simply because that network name appears at the top of your phone. A travel eSIM using an Italian partner network can require a completely different APN.

Common Italian menu labels include:

  • Rete dati cellulare: Cellular Data Network
  • Nomi punti di accesso: Access Point Names
  • Dati cellulare: Cellular Data
  • Roaming dati: Data Roaming
  • Selezione rete or Operatori di rete: Network Selection

APN on iPhone

If your provider allows manual editing, look for Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network, or open the travel line and look for Cellular Data Network. Enter the APN exactly as your provider gives it, including spelling and punctuation.

Do not fill username, password, MMS or other fields unless the provider specifically tells you to. Apple warns that incorrect APN settings can break mobile-data connectivity, and some carriers do not permit manual APN editing at all. See Apple’s APN instructions if the menu is missing or locked.

APN on Android

On a Pixel, the usual path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your travel eSIM > Access Point Names. On many Samsung phones it is Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.

If you create a new APN, save it and make sure it is actually selected afterward. Creating an APN but leaving the old profile selected changes nothing.

Signal bars but no internet

If you have LTE, 4G or 5G and pages still will not load, concentrate on data settings rather than reinstalling the eSIM. The phone has already managed to register with a network.

  • Confirm that the travel line is selected for mobile data.
  • Check the APN against the provider’s instructions character by character.
  • Check whether data roaming is required.
  • Confirm that the package has started and still has data remaining.
  • Disable the other SIM temporarily.
  • Temporarily disconnect any VPN or unusual private-network configuration while testing.
  • Restart the phone after changing the APN.

A data-only eSIM also does exactly what its name suggests. It may provide excellent internet while ordinary cellular calls and SMS remain unavailable. WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet-based services can still work over the data connection, but that does not mean the plan includes an Italian telephone number.

No Service or Emergency Calls Only

This is a different problem. The eSIM is not successfully registering on a usable mobile network.

First confirm that you are inside the plan’s coverage area. Some destination eSIMs will not connect before you arrive in Italy. Activation rules also differ: one plan may begin when it first connects to a supported network, while another may start at installation or purchase. Check the actual validity terms rather than assuming all travel products behave alike.

Next, try Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds and allow automatic network selection another chance.

If automatic selection still gives No Service, open the eSIM provider’s connection instructions. Some providers list one or more Italian partner networks. Only then should you turn automatic network selection off and try one of those supported networks manually.

Do not simply select whichever Italian carrier has the strongest-looking name in the list. Your travel profile may not have a roaming agreement with it.

If manual selection fixes the problem, remember that locking the phone to one carrier can cause trouble later as you travel around Italy. Once the connection is stable, automatic selection is usually the better setting unless your eSIM provider says otherwise.

Check whether the phone is carrier-locked

A correctly installed travel profile still cannot use a different carrier if the phone is locked to your home network.

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. An unlocked iPhone should show No SIM Restrictions.

Android does not have one universal equivalent because unlocking depends on the manufacturer and carrier. If the phone came directly from a mobile operator and a second carrier’s eSIM refuses to activate, contact the original operator and ask whether the device is SIM-locked.

Do not delete the profile unless support tells you to

Turning an eSIM off is reversible. Deleting one may not be.

If a line appears in the phone’s SIM settings, leave it installed while you work through roaming, data selection, APN and network checks. Some travel eSIM QR codes are intended for a single installation, and rescanning them after deletion can produce messages such as code no longer valid or plan cannot be added.

If the profile has already disappeared completely from the phone, connect to reliable Wi-Fi and check the provider’s app or confirmation email. Do not repeatedly scan the same QR code. Contact the provider if it reports that the activation code has already been used.

If you land late and still cannot get online

Use airport, railway-station or hotel Wi-Fi to retrieve the provider’s setup instructions before changing more settings. Keep the eSIM installed and take screenshots of the relevant APN, roaming and partner-network instructions so you can continue troubleshooting after leaving Wi-Fi.

It is also useful to have maps, train information and essential addresses available offline. Our guide to the best apps for a trip to Italy includes options that remain useful when mobile coverage disappears.

Once your connection is stable, you can plan your Italy route without relying on a hotel Wi-Fi connection every time you need to check the next stop.

If the eSIM worked yesterday but stopped today

A profile that previously worked is unlikely to have suddenly become incorrectly installed. Check the things that can change during the trip:

  • Your data allowance may be exhausted.
  • The plan’s validity period may have ended.
  • The phone may have switched the default data line after a restart or software update.
  • The device may be holding onto a partner network that is weak in your new location.
  • A manually selected network may no longer be available after moving to another city.
  • An APN may have reset after a software or carrier-settings update.

Try automatic network selection again, toggle Airplane Mode, and verify the default data SIM before doing anything more drastic.

Use a network reset only after the simpler checks

Resetting mobile-network settings can solve corrupted configuration problems, but it is a much broader tool than changing one incorrect APN.

Depending on the phone, a network reset can remove saved cellular preferences and may also affect Wi-Fi, VPN or APN configuration. Make sure you know your hotel Wi-Fi password and have your eSIM provider’s APN details before proceeding.

On a Pixel, Google currently places the option under Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Mobile Network Settings. Other Android manufacturers use different wording. After resetting, restart the phone and check the travel line’s APN and roaming settings again.

What to send eSIM support when none of this works

A useful support request contains more than “my internet doesn’t work.” Tell the provider:

  • your phone model and operating-system version;
  • the city or area of Italy where you are trying to connect;
  • whether the phone shows No Service, Emergency Only, LTE, 4G or 5G;
  • which eSIM is selected for mobile data;
  • whether data roaming is enabled;
  • the APN currently entered;
  • which partner networks you have tried, if any;
  • whether the package shows as active and still has data remaining;
  • the eSIM’s ICCID, EID or IMEI if support specifically requests it.

Do not post your QR code, activation code or other eSIM credentials publicly. If the provider confirms that the profile itself is defective, ask for a replacement or reinstallation procedure before deleting anything from the phone.
