The safe format is +39 followed by the hotel’s full Italian number. The unusual part is fixed lines: if the number starts with 0, keep that 0 after +39. A Rome hotel listed as 06 1234567 becomes +39 06 1234567, not +39 6 1234567. Italian mobile numbers normally start with 3, so a number such as 347 1234567 becomes +39 347 1234567.
For calling an Italian hotel, save the number in +39 format before you travel. That works cleanly from a foreign SIM, while roaming, and for WhatsApp when the property has actually registered that number with the service.
The Italian dialing rule that catches travelers out
Italy’s country code is +39. Unlike many European countries, the initial 0 on an Italian geographic landline is not something you strip off for an international call. Italy’s telecom regulator, AGCOM, classifies numbers beginning with 0 as geographic numbers, and Italian mobile operators give the same practical instruction for calls from abroad. Vodafone, for example, shows a Rome fixed line in the form +39 06….
- Rome landline: 06 1234567 becomes +39 06 1234567.
- Milan landline: 02 12345678 becomes +39 02 12345678.
- Florence landline: 055 123456 becomes +39 055 123456.
- Italian mobile: 347 1234567 becomes +39 347 1234567.
The plus sign is usually the easiest choice on a mobile phone because it substitutes for your home country’s international access code. If you are dialing from a traditional phone that cannot enter “+”, you may need the international access prefix used in the country you are calling from, followed by 39 and the complete Italian number.
WhatsApp and the hotel’s landline are not automatically the same thing
Many Italian hotels, guesthouses, agriturismi and apartment hosts use WhatsApp, but do not assume that every reception number can receive WhatsApp messages. A property may publish a fixed reception line beginning with 0 and a separate mobile or WhatsApp number beginning with 3.
If the hotel’s official website or your booking confirmation shows a WhatsApp icon or explicitly labels a number “WhatsApp,” use that number. Save it with +39 first, then start the chat. If a number is shown only as Telefono, Tel. or Reception, treat it as a normal voice number unless the property says otherwise.
This distinction matters when WhatsApp says a number is not registered. That does not necessarily mean the hotel number is wrong. It may simply be a conventional landline. If you want a broader set of useful communications and transport tools on your phone, see our must-have apps for navigating Italy.
Do not blindly remove a zero for WhatsApp
General international-number advice often tells travelers to remove a leading zero. That can be wrong for an Italian fixed line because the zero is part of the geographic number. If a hotel explicitly advertises a fixed number for WhatsApp, use the international form the hotel publishes, including +39 and the geographic 0.
For a normal Italian mobile number, there is no extra 0 to add. If the hotel gives you 333 1234567, save +39 333 1234567.
Calling from abroad, from inside Italy, or with a travel eSIM
If you are outside Italy, use +39 and the full Italian number. If you are already in Italy, the domestic form will work on an Italian line, but keeping hotel contacts saved in +39 format is simpler, especially if your phone is still using a foreign SIM.
If you have an EU or EEA mobile plan
Travelers roaming in Italy with an eligible EU or EEA plan generally make calls under the EU “roam like at home” rules, subject to their plan and fair-use conditions. The European Union explains the current rules on its mobile roaming information page. Check the welcome SMS from your carrier when you enter Italy because it should state the applicable rates and limits.
If you have a US, Canadian, UK or other non-EU plan
Do not assume a short call to reception is cheap. International roaming voice rates depend on your carrier. A WhatsApp call or message over Wi-Fi or mobile data can avoid per-minute voice charges, but only if the hotel uses WhatsApp and your data plan covers the connection.
If your travel eSIM is data-only
This is a common source of confusion. Many travel eSIMs provide data but no ordinary voice number. Pressing the normal Phone app’s call button may therefore use your home SIM, not the travel eSIM, and the charge can come from the home carrier.
Before making the call, check which line your phone has selected for voice. If you only need to tell the property that your train is late, a data message through WhatsApp, the booking platform or email may be safer than placing a carrier call.
What to say when reception answers in Italian
You do not need a polished speech. Give the information reception can use to identify the booking and solve the problem. Start with your name, reservation date and expected arrival time.
- Buongiorno, parla inglese? Hello, do you speak English?
- Ho una prenotazione a nome Rossi. I have a reservation under the name Rossi.
- Arrivo verso le ventidue. I will arrive around 10 p.m.
- Il mio treno è in ritardo. My train is delayed.
- Il mio volo è in ritardo. My flight is delayed.
- Posso fare il check-in dopo le ventitré? Can I check in after 11 p.m.?
- Potete mandarmi le istruzioni su WhatsApp? Can you send me the instructions on WhatsApp?
If the staff member speaks limited English, say your surname slowly and spell it if necessary. For a short hotel call, repeating the surname and giving the arrival date is usually enough for reception to find the reservation.

Late arrivals: call before reception closes, not after
A property can accept reservations late into the evening without having a staffed desk all night. This is especially important with small hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses, agriturismi and apartment-style accommodation. “Check-in until 22:00” can mean you need to arrive before 10 p.m. or arrange a specific late-check-in procedure in advance.
If you know you will be late, contact the property while staff are still available. Ask three concrete questions: whether someone will be at reception, whether there is a door code or key box, and what number to use if the entrance is locked.
For apartment-style stays, also save the exact doorway and access details offline. Our guide to finding an apartment in Italy explains why a street address alone may not get you to the correct entrance.
Once your accommodation is pinned down, you can build your Italy itinerary around the real arrival point rather than a vague neighborhood or booking-page map pin.
If the number does not work, diagnose the failure before trying random formats
- You get an immediate “number invalid” or “not in service” message: check the country code first. For an Italian fixed line, use +39 and keep the leading 0. For an Italian mobile, use +39 followed by the number beginning with 3.
- The call rings but nobody answers: the format is probably fine. Try the hotel’s booking-platform message function, WhatsApp if explicitly offered, or email. If it is outside reception hours, look for late-arrival instructions in the booking confirmation.
- WhatsApp says the number is not registered: do not keep changing digits. The published number may simply be a landline that the hotel does not use for WhatsApp.
- You only see an 800 number: look for a geographic or mobile alternative, especially if you are still outside Italy. Italian 800 numbers are national freephone services and may not be reachable from foreign networks.
- You have two SIMs and the call fails: confirm which SIM is handling voice calls. A data-only eSIM cannot replace a normal voice line unless you are using an internet calling app.
Use the contact details tied to your actual reservation
Search results can show a central reservations office, an old number, or another property with a similar name. For anything consequential, such as a late arrival, airport transfer, accessibility request or missing booking, start with the telephone number in the hotel’s own confirmation, official website, or the contact button inside the platform where you booked.
Keep the reservation reference, hotel address and one backup contact method saved offline. If the phone call drops as your train enters a tunnel or your roaming line refuses to connect, you still have a way to tell the property who you are, when you are arriving, and what you need.
