The aquarium is in Porto Antico on Ponte Spinola, on the waterfront side of the Old Port rather than in the streets of Genoa’s historic centre. Your booked time matters: admission is tied to a date and time slot, and once you leave you cannot use the same ticket to come back in. At the Genoa Aquarium entrance, have your ticket ready, keep prohibited objects out of your bags, and do not treat the exit as a temporary way to fetch something from a car or hotel.
Where the entrance actually is

The official address is Area Porto Antico, Ponte Spinola, 16128 Genova. Once you are inside the pedestrian Porto Antico area, look for Acquario rather than trying to find an entrance along Via Gramsci or Piazza Caricamento. The aquarium occupies the waterfront structure extending along Ponte Spinola.
The official Porto Antico map distinguishes the Biglietteria Acquario, meaning aquarium ticket office, from the aquarium itself. That is useful if you arrive needing ticket assistance rather than simply following people toward the visitor route.
From San Giorgio metro station, come out toward the port and cross into Porto Antico. From Genova Piazza Principe, the aquarium says to allow roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot, or use the metro to San Giorgio. The official directions to the aquarium are worth checking if roadworks or city transport changes affect your arrival.
Your ticket needs a time slot
Booking a date and admission time is required to guarantee entry. Buying an online ticket does not mean you can simply appear at any point during opening hours.
The aquarium currently sells two main ticket formats:
- Biglietto a Data Fissa: you select the date and time while purchasing. That reservation is binding. The aquarium states that fixed-date tickets cannot be changed or refunded.
- Open Flexi: you buy greater scheduling flexibility but still need to reserve a date and time before visiting. Under the current rules, the booked slot can be changed once through the customer account, subject to the ticket conditions.
Prices are dynamic, so there is little value in memorising a figure from an old travel article. The aquarium currently advertises adult admission online from €26, while the amount at the ticket office can be higher. Check the official ticket page for the date you actually intend to visit.
How early should you arrive?
Do not build a train-to-aquarium connection around arriving at Porto Antico at the exact minute printed on the booking. Allow time to walk from the station, find the correct building, deal with luggage and have the ticket available on your phone.
A sensible buffer is particularly useful after a long-distance train or flight because a fixed-date reservation has little recovery flexibility. If your schedule is genuinely uncertain, the more flexible ticket can be worth the extra cost.
If you have a combined ticket for other Porto Antico attractions, check each component carefully. A ticket bundle does not mean that every attraction shares the same entrance or that you can wander in and out of the aquarium during the day.
What happens before you enter

Have the QR code or other admission document available before reaching staff. Brighten your phone screen and avoid relying on a webpage that still needs a weak mobile connection to load. Saving the ticket locally is a small precaution that can save an awkward few minutes at the door.
If you are using a reduced or free ticket, bring the documentation proving eligibility. The aquarium’s regulations allow staff to ask for the relevant valid documents.
Tickets are not nominal in the usual sense. The name appearing on an online booking can simply be the purchaser’s name, and the aquarium states that tickets may be transferred to another person. The important restrictions are the ticket type, reserved slot and conditions attached to it.
Security rules: what not to put in your bag
The aquarium publishes a clear list of objects that cannot be brought inside. Prohibited items include:
- knives;
- sharp, cutting or blunt objects;
- weapons and ammunition;
- flammable or explosive materials.
Visitors carrying weapons are not admitted even when they have a legal weapons permit. More importantly for travelers, the aquarium states that prohibited objects cannot simply be left at the cloakroom. If you turn up with something that falls within these categories, do not assume staff can store it while you visit.
The published visitor rules do not describe admission as an airport-style security procedure, so it is better not to assume a particular combination of scanners, bag searches or metal detectors. Staff enforce the venue’s safety rules, and what matters before arrival is removing anything the regulations prohibit.
Suitcases and backpacks
There is a guarded cloakroom, listed by the aquarium as suitable for both clothing and luggage. The current charge is €3 per item.
That makes the aquarium workable on a transfer day, but build the cloakroom stop into your arrival time. A family arriving with coats, backpacks and several suitcases may have considerably more to sort out than someone carrying one small day bag.
Do not confuse the cloakroom’s willingness to accept ordinary luggage with permission to store banned security items. The latter are specifically excluded.
If your Genoa visit includes the aquarium between trains or on the way to another city, you can organize the rest of your Italy route around the reserved admission rather than treating the attraction as a completely flexible stop.
The visit follows a marked route
Once inside, follow the aquarium’s blue panels and totems. The exhibition is designed around a defined visitor route rather than a collection of independent galleries branching from one central lobby.
The route continues through several sections of the main aquarium and the Nave Blu complex. Facilities appear along the way, including toilets, baby-changing facilities, lifts, vending machines and food areas.
The aquarium estimates an average visit at about 2 hours 30 minutes, but there is no fixed maximum visit duration. That distinction matters when booking lunch, a train or another timed attraction afterward. Two and a half hours is an estimate, not a promise that you will be standing outside at exactly that point.
For a broader overview of what is inside and how the attraction fits into Porto Antico, see the Italy on Foot page for the Acquario di Genova.
Food, toilets and breaks do not require leaving
Do not exit because someone needs a snack or a rest. The aquarium provides facilities inside the route precisely because re-entry is not permitted.
Current facilities include the Tender refreshment point, the Gusto a Bordo restaurant on the deck of the Nave Blu, vending machines and an outdoor picnic area on the ship’s deck. Food and drink cannot be consumed freely inside exhibition rooms; use the designated areas.
There are also six toilets with baby-changing facilities along the route. Visitors with reduced mobility use the same visitor itinerary as everyone else, with lifts available where required.
The exit is final
This is the rule most likely to cause trouble: one ticket gives one admission only. Once you pass out of the aquarium, you cannot turn around and re-enter using that same ticket.
Keep your ticket until the visit is completely finished because aquarium staff may ask to see it during the route.
Near the end, follow the signs marked Uscita, meaning exit. The official visitor map separately marks normal exits and Uscita di sicurezza, emergency exits. Do not mistake an emergency-door symbol for the ordinary visitor route.
The visitor flow includes a gift shop toward the end before you return to the Porto Antico area. Once outside, you are back in the waterfront complex, with Piazza Caricamento and San Giorgio metro inland from the harbour area.
Do not leave something important outside
Before your ticket is scanned, check for the items most likely to trigger an unnecessary exit later: medication, children’s supplies, glasses, phone charger or power bank, and anything you intended to use during the visit.
The same applies if part of your group is arriving separately. Do not assume one person can enter, come back outside to meet the others, and then use the original ticket again.
If you are late for your slot
A fixed-date ticket should be treated as a real appointment, not as a loose suggestion. The aquarium explicitly requires visitors to respect the selected date and time, and its published conditions do not give fixed-date ticket holders a general right to move the booking when plans go wrong.
If disruption is developing before arrival and you hold an Open Flexi ticket, use your online account immediately rather than waiting until you reach Porto Antico. Under the current FAQ, that ticket allows one change of date or time slot within the applicable change window.
If you already know you will miss a fixed reservation, contact the aquarium rather than assuming the gate will accommodate a substantially late arrival. Staff on site control admission; a travel blog cannot promise an exception to the booked slot.
A simple arrival sequence
- Reach Porto Antico and follow signs for Acquario.
- Go toward the aquarium building on Ponte Spinola, using the ticket-office signs if you need purchase or eligibility assistance.
- Open your ticket or QR code before joining the admission flow.
- Present any documentation needed for a reduced or complimentary ticket.
- Deposit ordinary luggage at the guarded cloakroom if necessary.
- Enter and follow the blue route markers through the exhibition.
- Use the internal food, toilet and rest facilities instead of leaving midway.
- Follow Uscita only when everyone in your group has genuinely finished, because your ticket cannot be used for re-entry.
