The Positano ferry pier to hotel trip can involve anything from a short walk near beach level to hundreds of uphill steps. The ferry lands at Spiaggia Grande, at the bottom of a town built almost entirely up the hillside. A hotel that looks only 300 metres away on a map may be much harder to reach than one twice as far away along a road. Before booking, check the hotelโs elevation, its nearest vehicle-accessible entrance, and the exact number of steps from the pier.
Positanoโs municipal information places the ferry landing at Spiaggia Grande and identifies Via dei Mulini as the pedestrian connection between the beach area and Piazza dei Mulini above it. In other words, arriving by boat puts you at the bottom of the hill, not at a road-level transport terminal. The Comune di Positano page for Marina Grande confirms the location and pedestrian access.
There is no useful โaverage number of stairsโ
Positano is too irregular for a single stair count. Some accommodation around Spiaggia Grande is close to the water and requires relatively little climbing. Move just a little farther uphill and the route may suddenly switch from a lane to a long staircase. Hotels in the upper part of town can involve a substantial climb from the waterfront, with hundreds of steps entirely plausible even when the straight-line distance looks short. Local destination information specifically warns travelers to check hotel height because a property only a short distance from the sea can still involve a 300-step staircase.
The important distinction is horizontal distance versus vertical access. A booking site saying โ400 metres from the beachโ tells you almost nothing about how difficult the arrival will be.
Where the ferry actually leaves you
You disembark at the pier beside Spiaggia Grande, Positanoโs main beach. Signs may use molo for pier, Spiaggia Grande or Marina Grande for the waterfront, and centro for the town center.
From the waterfront, the principal pedestrian route climbs inland toward Via dei Mulini and Piazza dei Mulini. Piazza dei Mulini is important because it is on Positanoโs road network and is served by local transport. The pier itself is not a place where you should expect a taxi or private car to pull alongside your ferry.
That creates the classic Positano arrival problem: your suitcase is on the beach, while your hotel entrance may be several levels of town above you.
Estimate the climb by hotel area
Spiaggia Grande and the immediate waterfront
This is the easiest category for a ferry arrival. Properties close to Via Marina Grande, Via del Brigantino and the beach can have a relatively short approach. Still check the actual entrance. In Positano, a hotel may advertise itself as โby the beachโ while reception or some rooms sit higher inside the building.
Lower center and Via dei Mulini
This area is still a sensible match for arriving by sea, but expect an uphill pedestrian walk from the pier. Routes weave through lanes near Santa Maria Assunta and then rise toward Via dei Mulini. There can be steps mixed with sloping sections rather than one continuous staircase.
Piazza dei Mulini and Via Cristoforo Colombo
These addresses are considerably higher than the beach. The advantage is that they are associated with Positanoโs drivable road network. If your hotel is here, compare two completely different arrivals: climbing up from the ferry versus arriving by car at the closest permitted drop-off point. The second may be far easier with a large suitcase.
Via Pasitea and Chiesa Nuova
Be cautious about choosing a ferry purely because the sea journey looks convenient. Much of Via Pasitea wraps around the hillside well above the water, and the Chiesa Nuova area is in the upper part of Positano. Destination guidance specifically discourages a sea arrival for hotels high above the port because the connection from the waterfront is pedestrian and stair-heavy.
Fornillo
Fornillo looks close to Spiaggia Grande on a map, and there is a coastal pedestrian connection between the two beaches. That does not mean every Fornillo hotel is easy from the ferry. Some properties sit well above the beach, so ask whether reception is better approached from the waterfront or from Via Pasitea.
Montepertuso and Nocelle
Do not treat these hillside settlements as an ordinary walk from the ferry with luggage. They are substantially above central Positano and are served by road and local buses. For an overnight stay there, plan the final transport with your accommodation rather than improvising after you step off the boat.
The three questions to ask your hotel before booking
Do not simply ask, โIs the hotel close to the ferry?โ Ask questions that force a useful answer:
- Exactly how many steps are there from the Positano ferry pier to reception?
- Exactly how many steps are there from the nearest taxi or private-transfer drop-off point to reception?
- Can you arrange a luggage porter from Spiaggia Grande, and must it be booked before arrival?
Those answers tell you far more than the hotelโs map pin. A property may require 150 steps from the beach but only 15 from the nearest road. In that case, arriving by road can transform the check-in experience.

How to check the hill yourself
- Use the exact accommodation address. Do not rely only on the property pin shown by a booking platform.
- Set Spiaggia Grande as your starting point. The waterfront ferry landing is the relevant reference, not a generic โPositanoโ marker.
- Inspect the walking route rather than just its distance. Zoom in for stair symbols, narrow pedestrian passages and sharp switchbacks.
- Find the nearest drivable street. Look particularly at Via Pasitea, Piazza dei Mulini and Via Cristoforo Colombo for central properties.
- Compare the beach approach with the road approach. The shortest route on the map is not necessarily the easiest arrival.
- Send the route to the hotel and ask them to confirm it. Positano has private stairways, multiple entrances and pedestrian shortcuts that mapping apps do not always represent well.
Also be suspicious of phrases such as โfive minutes from the beach.โ That may describe a quick downhill walk by someone carrying nothing. Your arrival is the same route in the opposite direction, with luggage.
Porters solve the suitcase problem, not the hill
Private luggage porters operate around the Positano pier, and they can make a ferry arrival dramatically easier if you have suitcases. Their service is separate from the ferry companyโs baggage charge. Travelmar, for example, states that its porter service is optional and paid directly by the passenger, while its own baggage rules concern carriage aboard the vessel. Check Travelmarโs current conditions of transport if that is your operator.
Before handing over a bag, confirm the total price, the exact hotel or delivery point, and whether the luggage is going directly to reception. If your accommodation offers to arrange a porter in advance, that is usually preferable to working out the destination after disembarking.
A porter does not remove the climb for you. If there are 200 steps between the sea and your accommodation, your suitcase may travel separately while you still have to walk them.
Can you take a bus after getting off the ferry?
Possibly, but not directly from the pier. The useful handoff point is higher up around Piazza dei Mulini, where local Mobility Amalfi Coast services operate. Current 2026 transport information lists Piazza dei Mulini among the Positano stops, along with stops farther around the hillside such as Sponda.
This can work well for a hotel higher up the road: send the luggage with a porter, walk from the beach to Piazza dei Mulini, then continue by local bus if the route serves a stop near your accommodation. Ask the hotel for the name of the correct bus stop, not simply whether โthere is a bus nearby.โ
SITAโs coastal buses use the upper road through Positano, with principal stops including Sponda and Chiesa Nuova. They do not descend to Spiaggia Grande.
When arriving by road is the better choice
Choose a road arrival rather than a ferry when the hotel is high on the hillside, when you have several heavy suitcases, or when anyone in your party would struggle with repeated stairs. A taxi or private transfer may still be unable to stop directly outside the hotel, but approaching from the road can remove a large portion of the vertical climb.

Strollers, reduced mobility and bad knees change the decision
A compact stroller can be carried over Positanoโs stairs, but that becomes tiring quickly when combined with bags and a child. Do not assume that a hotel lift makes the arrival step-free. The lift may operate only between floors inside the property, after you have already climbed an outdoor staircase.
For reduced mobility, ask the hotel explicitly for a route requiring zero steps from the nearest vehicle drop-off. If it cannot provide one, clarify exactly where the unavoidable steps are and whether assistance is available. Ferry accessibility and hotel accessibility are separate questions: an accessible boat does not make the steep pedestrian route through Positano accessible. Ferry operators themselves recommend arranging boarding assistance in advance where necessary.
What to do if you arrive and the climb is worse than expected
Do not start dragging a large wheeled suitcase blindly uphill. At Spiaggia Grande, first contact the hotel. Ask whether they have a porter waiting, which pedestrian route they recommend, and whether you should aim for Piazza dei Mulini or another road-level meeting point.
If the hotel is much higher than expected, a workable recovery is often to separate yourself from your luggage. Arrange porter delivery, walk only as far as the appropriate road or bus stop, and use local transport for the remaining ascent where possible.
If your ferry is cancelled because of sea conditions, do not assume the replacement road arrival should follow the same route. Tell the hotel you are now arriving by taxi, bus or private transfer and ask for its nearest vehicle-accessible drop-off point. Ferry schedules and operations can change with conditions, so check your operatorโs current service information, such as the official Travelmar timetable, before setting out.
Be especially careful with late arrivals
A daytime ferry arrival gives you more options if something goes wrong. Later in the day, porter availability, local bus frequency and hotel reception arrangements may all become more important. Do not assume someone will automatically be waiting at the pier simply because the hotel mentioned a porter service on its website.
If your scheduled arrival is late, send the hotel your ferry company, departure point and expected arrival time. Ask what you should do if the sailing is delayed or cancelled. Keep the hotel phone number available offline rather than buried inside a booking app.
The booking mistakes that create the worst arrivals
- Choosing by map distance alone. Positano is vertical. A short line on a map can hide a long staircase.
- Assuming โsea viewโ means โnear sea level.โ Often the opposite is true.
- Checking steps from the beach but not from the road. You need both numbers before deciding between ferry and taxi.
- Assuming a taxi can collect you beside the boat. The waterfront connection into town is pedestrian.
- Confusing ferry baggage handling with hotel porter service. They are separate services and may have separate charges.
- Trusting the phrase โeasy walk.โ Ask for a stair count instead.
- Assuming an elevator solves outdoor access. Confirm how many steps come before the elevator.
The simplest rule is to choose your Positano arrival method after choosing your hotel. For a waterfront or lower-center property, stepping off a ferry at Spiaggia Grande can be wonderfully convenient. For a hotel high above Via Pasitea or near Chiesa Nuova, arriving by sea may leave you with the hardest part of the journey still ahead.
