If the tobacconist is shut, you do not need to ride without a ticket or spend the evening searching for another shop. For an ordinary urban journey, the quickest fallback is usually to tap a contactless bank card, phone or watch on the validator after boarding. The standard Florence urban fare is €2 and is valid for 90 minutes. Other late options include the official digital channels, SMS, ticket machines at tram stops and, as a more expensive fallback, buying from the driver. In practice, buying a Florence bus ticket after the tabacchi closes is mostly a matter of choosing the payment method that still works for you.

The fastest option: tap your card on board
Autolinee Toscane’s Tip Tap system lets you buy a ticket directly on Florence buses and trams with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, or an enabled phone or smartwatch. There is no onboard surcharge for Tip Tap. Hold the card or device against the contactless reader and wait for the green confirmation. A red screen means the purchase has not succeeded, so do not assume you are covered.
On an urban service, tap every time you board, including when you transfer to another bus or to a tram. Keep using exactly the same payment method throughout the journey. A physical card and that same card in Apple Pay or Google Wallet are treated as different devices, so switching between them can create a second charge. Within the Florence urban ticket’s validity period, repeat taps with the same card or device do not create another urban ticket.
One card does not cover a whole group
Tip Tap is designed as one payment device per passenger. You cannot tap the same physical card several times to buy tickets for three or four people. If the same bank card is loaded onto separate devices, such as the physical card, a phone and a watch, each device can be used for one passenger, but every person must keep using the same device for later taps. For a family or group, Blink is usually simpler.
For a group, use Blink before the bus arrives
Blink is Autolinee Toscane’s browser-based ticket option and does not require an account. You can buy up to 10 Florence urban tickets in one purchase session. Each ticket arrives by email with its own activation link. Activate only when you are about to travel because activation starts the validity period immediately. You need a working data connection to activate and display the ticket.
One person can activate several Blink tickets on the same phone as long as everyone travels together, or the unused ticket emails can be forwarded to companions before activation. Do not forward only the activation link. The full ticket email is what should be passed on. Once a ticket has been activated on a device, it cannot simply be moved to another phone.
The at bus app works too, but it needs an account
The official at bus app can buy and activate tickets and is useful if you will use buses repeatedly around Tuscany. For single tickets and carnets, Autolinee Toscane requires a basic my at account with your name, email address and password. An unused digital ticket remains available for 12 months, but you must activate it at the start of the journey and be able to show it on the same device during an inspection.
If you are deciding which transport apps are worth installing before the rest of your trip, the Italy travel apps guide separates the useful local operators from the apps you can safely skip.
SMS works, but only if your mobile service supports it
For an urban Florence ticket by SMS, send FIRENZE to 4880105. Autolinee Toscane says the SMS ticket must be purchased at least two minutes before boarding. The current Florence SMS fare is €2.40 plus the mobile operator’s message charge, and the official list names TIM, Vodafone, WINDTRE, Very Mobile and Fastweb. The ticket is already active when the confirmation arrives, and the message contains the QR code link used for inspection.
This is not the best method to discover at the curb with a foreign roaming SIM. If your operator is not supported, the message may not produce a ticket. Use contactless, Blink or a tram-stop machine instead.
Near a tram stop? Use the ticket machine

Every Florence tram stop has an automatic ticket machine selling single tickets, which is particularly useful after nearby bars, newsstands and tabaccherie have closed. GEST states that these machines accept debit and credit cards including contactless payment. The machine gives you a conventional ticket, so remember that buying it is not the same as validating it. Stamp or validate it when you start the journey.
This can be a good recovery move around Santa Maria Novella because the station area has tram stops as well as buses. If you are arriving there late with luggage, the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station guide explains the tram and bus connections around the station.
Buying from the driver is the fallback, not Plan A
For Florence urban services, a ticket bought from the driver costs €3. After purchase, it still has to be validated, and in Florence it is then valid for 90 minutes. Autolinee Toscane warns that onboard sales are available only when safety and service conditions allow, may be suspended during ticket inspections, and the driver is not required to provide change. Carry small coins if this is your only option.
The important part is what happens if the driver cannot sell you one: that does not give you permission to ride without a valid ticket. If Tip Tap has failed and there is no driver sale, get off and use another sales channel. That is inconvenient, but much cheaper than trying to explain the closed tobacconist to an inspector.
Which option should you choose after hours?
- Solo traveler with a contactless card: use Tip Tap. It is the fastest and costs the normal urban fare.
- Two or more people with one phone: use Blink and activate the required number of tickets together.
- No mobile data: use Tip Tap, or buy a paper ticket from a tram-stop machine if one is nearby.
- Phone battery nearly dead: avoid relying on a digital ticket that you may be unable to display later. Use a physical bank card or paper ticket.
- Cash only: driver sale may work, but it costs more and is not guaranteed. Have small change.
- Supported Italian mobile operator and no card: SMS is workable, but buy it before the bus reaches you.
If this ticket problem is part of a wider arrival-day route with trains, trams and a hotel check-in, you can plan your Italy route before you start chaining transfers together.
Do not activate a digital ticket too early
The Florence urban ticket is valid for 90 minutes from validation or activation. That clock matters. If you buy on Blink, keep the activation link untouched until shortly before boarding. With an app ticket, activate it at the start of the journey. A paper ticket is similarly dormant until you validate it.
If you are changing buses within those 90 minutes, the ordinary Florence ticket remains valid as long as the next ride falls within the time window. With Tip Tap, tap the same card or device again each time you board an urban vehicle so the system can recognize the continuing journey.
What if your phone dies after you bought the ticket?
A digital purchase is not much help if you cannot activate or show it. Autolinee Toscane explicitly says that if you cannot activate a digital ticket because your phone is flat, you have no signal or you have another technical problem, you must obtain another valid ticket. Their suggested fallbacks are driver sale or Tip Tap; if neither is possible, you need to leave the vehicle and use another sales method.
That makes a physical contactless card the safest late-night backup to keep separate from your phone. It still works if your battery is gone, and it avoids depending on mobile data.
Check whether your bus is actually an urban service
The €2 Florence fare and the 90-minute rule apply to the Florence urban ticket. Tuscany also has mixed-fare and suburban lines, and the contactless procedure changes on those services: urban buses require a tap when boarding, while mixed and suburban journeys require a tap when you board and another when you get off so the system can calculate the fare.
If your trip is leaving the Florence urban area, especially for a town elsewhere in Tuscany, do not assume that a city ticket is enough just because the bus begins in Florence. Check the route and fare on Autolinee Toscane’s current fare page before boarding.
One Florence quirk: contactless is not the same as every other urban ticket
The standard Florence urban ticket can include certain regional train journeys between listed stations inside the metropolitan ticket arrangement, but an urban ticket bought through Tip Tap does not include those regional train trips. If your plan involves a train between Florence stations rather than only buses and trams, buy an eligible ordinary ticket through another channel and keep the required purchase receipt available for inspection.
If the validator gives you a red screen
- Hold the card still against the reader and try again.
- If you used a phone or watch, try the physical card instead.
- Do not walk away until you have seen the green confirmation or obtained a ticket another way.
- If the onboard reader is not working, ask the driver whether a ticket can be sold on board.
- If you still cannot buy one, get off and use Blink, the app, SMS if supported, or a nearby tram-stop machine.
A closed tabacchi is annoying, but it is no longer a dead end. For most solo travelers, the green Tip Tap confirmation is the cleanest solution. For groups, Blink is usually easier. Keep the €3 driver ticket as the emergency option rather than the first one you reach for.
