A fixed airport taxi price in Italy is only reliable when it comes from the authority that regulates that particular taxi service. There is no national airport-to-city tariff. Rome, Milan, Naples and other cities use different zones, conditions and terminology. Italian airport taxi fixed fares can also depend on your exact destination address, not simply the city name. Before getting into the cab, check the official tariff, confirm that your route qualifies, and make sure you are using a licensed taxi rather than a private transfer.
The fastest way to check whether your taxi fare is really fixed
You need three pieces of information: the airport, the exact destination address, and the authority responsible for taxis there. Do not search only for something broad such as โtaxi from Rome airport to city centre.โ A hotel described as central by a booking website can still sit outside the official fixed-fare zone.
- Find the airport’s official transport page. Look under Taxi, Trasporti, Come arrivare or To and from the airport.
- Look for the regulating authority. Taxi prices may be set by a Comune (municipality), a regional authority, or an airport-area taxi basin.
- Search for the current tariff. Useful Italian terms are tariffe taxi, tariffa fissa and tariffa predeterminata.
- Check the destination definition. โRome within the Aurelian Wallsโ and โany street in Milanโ are very different kinds of fare zones.
- Read the conditions underneath the price. Check whether luggage, night service, holidays, motorway tolls, reservations and intermediate stops are included.
- Confirm the fare before the taxi moves. This is particularly important where the passenger must actively request the predetermined tariff.
The last step matters because an eligible route does not always mean the same procedure in every city.
What official fixed fares look like in practice
Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino
Rome’s official taxi information currently lists a fixed fare of โฌ55 per vehicle between Fiumicino Airport and addresses inside the Aurelian Walls. From Ciampino Airport, the corresponding fare is โฌ40 per vehicle. The published airport prices include supplements.
The crucial words are all’interno delle Mura Aureliane. That is a geographical boundary, not a loose definition of โcentral Rome.โ An accommodation outside the walls does not qualify simply because it is close to the historic centre.

At Fiumicino, the airport identifies authorized taxis as white vehicles with a TAXI roof sign, municipal markings and a licence number displayed on the vehicle. Official taxi service is available at the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 Arrivals areas. At Ciampino, follow the taxi signs from Arrivals.
Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio
Lombardy handles the major Milan-area airports through a regional airport taxi basin, so the rules are not simply โMilan city taxi rules.โ The Regione Lombardia tariff page currently publishes predetermined fares including:
- Malpensa Airport to any street in the municipality of Milan: โฌ114
- Malpensa Airport to Fiera Milano in Rho: โฌ94
- Malpensa Airport to Linate Airport: โฌ128
- Orio al Serio Airport to any street in Milan: โฌ128
Here the wording qualunque via della cittร , meaning any street in the city, is especially useful. It removes the kind of historic-centre boundary question you face in Rome, provided the address is actually within Milan municipality.
The Lombardy predetermined fares are all-inclusive for the listed direct routes, including motorway tolls and night or holiday supplements. They assume a direct journey without intermediate stops. If the passenger asks to change the route or destination during the ride, the published rules allow the driver to switch to a metered calculation.
Naples is a good example of why the procedure matters
Naples Airport also uses predetermined prices for specific urban and extra-urban destinations. The official airport taxi area is directly in front of Arrivals, and the airport links to the municipality’s fare table.
The published Naples tariff sheet states that predetermined fares must be requested at the beginning of the journey and are priced per vehicle. Current listed examples include โฌ21 between the airport and Napoli Centrale/Piazza Garibaldi and โฌ24 between the airport and Porto/Molo Beverello.
That is different from merely getting into a taxi and assuming the driver will automatically apply whatever fixed rate you saw online. Check the current Naples Airport taxi information shortly before your trip because the municipality can revise both prices and conditions.
The Italian words that tell you what you are actually paying
A few terms on the tariff sheet make checking the price much easier:
- Tariffa fissa: fixed fare.
- Tariffa predeterminata: predetermined fare for a specified route.
- Omnicomprensiva: all-inclusive. Read the conditions to see exactly what is included.
- Per vettura / a vettura: per vehicle, rather than per passenger.
- A corsa: per journey.
- Tassametro: taximeter.
- Supplementi: additional charges.
- Festivo: Sunday or public-holiday tariff or supplement.
- Notturno: night tariff or supplement.
- Bagaglio: luggage.
- Pedaggio: toll, usually a motorway toll.
- Chiamata radiotaxi: charge associated with calling or booking a taxi through a radio-taxi service.
If a notice says comprensiva di tutti i supplementi, the quoted price includes all supplements covered by that rule. Do not automatically assume this applies everywhere in Italy.
What to say to the driver before leaving the airport
You do not need complicated Italian. Show the hotel address on your phone and ask:
- โC’รจ una tariffa fissa per questo indirizzo?โ Is there a fixed fare for this address?
- โQuanto costa in totale?โ How much is it in total?
- โร per vettura?โ Is that per vehicle?
- โSono compresi i supplementi?โ Are the supplements included?
- โMi mostra il tariffario?โ Can you show me the official fare table?
If your city requires the fixed rate to be requested at departure, say โVorrei la tariffa predeterminataโ before the taxi moves.
Do not confuse a taxi with an NCC or private airport transfer
One of the most common airport misunderstandings happens before the journey even begins. A person offering a car inside the terminal may not be operating the municipal taxi service at all.
NCC stands for noleggio con conducente, a chauffeur-driven private-hire service. A legitimate NCC can be perfectly legal, but its agreed price is not automatically governed by the municipal taxi fixed fare you found online. The same applies to many pre-booked private airport transfers.
If your intention is to use the regulated airport taxi price, follow the airport’s TAXI signs to the official rank rather than accepting an unsolicited ride in the arrivals hall.
Check the address, not just the name of your neighbourhood
Fixed fares frequently fail at the boundary. Your booking may say โRome Centro,โ โMilan,โ or โNaples city centre,โ while the tariff regulation uses municipal boundaries, historic walls or specifically named streets and zones.
Open your accommodation address before reaching the taxi rank. If the official tariff provides a map or named boundary, compare your address with it. When in doubt, show the full street address to the taxi-rank attendant or driver and ask whether it qualifies. Getting a clear โyes, fixed fareโ before departure is much easier than arguing about a boundary after arrival.
Night arrivals, Sundays and public holidays
A late flight does not automatically make an official fixed airport fare more expensive. Rome’s published airport prices are inclusive of supplements, and Lombardy’s listed predetermined airport routes include night and holiday charges. Naples also incorporates night and holiday elements into its published predetermined fares.
That does not create an Italy-wide rule. In another city, a nighttime supplement may still apply to a metered airport journey or to a route outside the fixed-fare area. Look specifically for notturno, festivo and supplementi on the local tariff.
Luggage, larger groups and minivans
Do not assume that every fixed price covers every vehicle configuration. Standard airport fares are commonly quoted per cab, but larger vehicles can have separate conditions. Naples, for example, publishes an additional minivan charge in its tariff schedule.
If five or more people are travelling together, or you have several large suitcases, ask two questions before joining the queue: whether one vehicle can take the group and whether requesting a larger vehicle changes the published fare.
The same principle applies to unusual luggage. If the official fixed rate says all supplements are included, ordinary baggage should not suddenly generate an unexplained extra charge. If the journey is metered, local baggage rules may be different.
What can make a fixed fare stop being fixed?
The exact answer depends on the local regulation, but common causes include:
- your destination being outside the published fixed-fare zone;
- asking for an intermediate stop;
- changing the destination after departure;

Why Google results and old screenshots are not enough
Taxi tariffs change, and old municipal PDFs can remain indexed long after a new price takes effect. Search results may therefore show a perfectly genuine official document carrying yesterday’s fare.
Use the page currently linked from the airport, municipality or regional transport authority, and check for an update date or recent tariff decision when available. If an airport’s live taxi page and an older PDF disagree, treat that as a reason to verify at the official rank before boarding rather than choosing whichever number is cheaper.
A screenshot from another traveler, a hotel blog or a forum post can help you know what to look for, but it should not outrank the current tariff published by the responsible authority.
If the driver quotes a different amount
First make sure you are comparing the same service and the same destination. Show the official fare page and your exact address. Ask, โPerchรฉ non si applica la tariffa predeterminata?โ, meaning โWhy doesn’t the predetermined fare apply?โ There may be a legitimate boundary or route condition you missed.
If the explanation does not match the published rule, note the taxi’s licence or identification number. At Rome airports, authorized taxis display a licence number on the vehicle; Naples specifically advises passengers making a complaint to record the CP Taxi number shown on the doors.
Ask for a receipt with โMi dร la ricevuta, per favore?โ Keep the receipt, the vehicle or licence number, the time, pickup point and destination. Those details are much more useful for a municipal complaint than a description such as โwhite taxi at the airport.โ
If you notice the problem before departing, the easiest recovery is usually to remain at the official taxi area, check the posted tariff or ask airport staff, and resolve the price before the car leaves.
