Italian Motorway Toll Tickets: What to Do If You Lose the Entry Ticket

The rule for Italian motorway toll tickets is simple: if your entry ticket disappears before the exit, do not reverse or try to force through the barrier. At a staffed lane, tell the attendant you lost it. At an automatic lane, stay in the car, press the assistance button, and wait for the operator. Without the ticket, Italian law allows the toll to be calculated from the farthest possible entry station, but you can provide evidence of where you actually entered and many concessionaires provide a procedure to have the charge recalculated.

What to do when you reach the toll booth

If you realize the ticket is missing while you are still driving, there is no special motorway exit you need to find. Continue to your intended uscita and deal with the problem at the toll plaza.

  1. Use a staffed lane if one is clearly available. Look for a lane showing payment by cash with an attendant rather than a Telepass-only lane.
  2. If you are already in an automatic lane, stay there. Do not reverse into traffic to change lanes. Autostrade per l’Italia specifically states that reversing at toll gates is not permitted and that drivers in automatic lanes should use the assistance button and wait for an operator.
  3. Tell the operator the ticket is lost. A useful phrase is Ho perso il biglietto di ingresso, meaning “I lost the entry ticket.”
  4. Say where you entered. If you remember the toll station, give its name: Sono entrato a Firenze Nord, for example.
  5. Follow the operator’s instructions. If the normal toll cannot be established at the barrier, you may receive a Rapporto di Mancato Pagamento Pedaggio, usually shortened to RMPP.
  6. Keep every piece of paper you receive. Photograph the report before driving away in case the original is later misplaced.

The most important thing at the booth is not to improvise. Do not get out of the car between toll lanes, reverse to another lane, lift or drive around a barrier, or follow another vehicle through a telepayment lane.

Why the amount can suddenly look enormous

Article 176, paragraph 16 of the Italian Highway Code sets the basic rule for a driver who cannot produce the entry document. The motorway toll can be calculated from the farthest possible entry station for that vehicle class.

That can make a short drive appear to cost far more than expected. The amount is not simply a random penalty invented by the toll attendant. It is the statutory method used when the system cannot establish where the journey began.

The same law also gives the driver the opportunity to prove the real entry station. This second part is what matters once you are safely away from the toll gate.

Read the missed-payment report before leaving

An RMPP is not a receipt to throw into the glove compartment and forget about. Check it while the details of the journey are still fresh.

Look for information such as:

  • numero rapporto or report number
  • targa, your vehicle registration number
  • vehicle class
  • date and time
  • stazione di uscita, the exit toll station
  • entry information, if any
  • the amount requested
  • the motorway concessionaire responsible for the report

On reports issued within the Autostrade per l’Italia system, you may see wording such as ENTRATA NON RILEVATA, BIGLIETTO SMARRITO, or 888-BIGLIETTO SMARRITO. These indicate that the entry was not established and that the charge has been calculated accordingly.

How to get the toll recalculated

Do not search for one national “lost toll ticket office.” Italy’s motorways are divided among different concessionaires, and the procedure for correcting the entry station depends on the company that issued your report.

If the report is from Autostrade per l’Italia

Autostrade per l’Italia provides an online entry-station self-certification procedure. Its current guidance allows a driver with an “entry not detected” or “lost ticket” report to declare the actual entrance and request recalculation of the toll. Supporting documents can also be attached, and the company may subsequently check whether the declaration is accurate.

Once the real journey has been accepted and recalculated, you pay the corrected amount using the methods offered for that report.

If another concessionaire issued it

Use the company name printed on the RMPP rather than automatically sending the case to Autostrade per l’Italia. Procedures are similar in principle but not identical.

For example, Autostrade Alto Adriatico currently instructs drivers without an entry ticket to submit its declaration for the real entrance on reports issued on its own network. Other concessionaires may use an online portal, downloadable form, email address, customer office, or a combination of these.

The practical rule is simple: the logo and company name on the missed-payment report determine where you resolve it.

What can help establish where you entered

If you know the exact toll station, write it down immediately. Station names can be surprisingly easy to confuse a few days later, especially around cities with several exits such as Firenze Nord, Firenze Sud, Roma Nord, or Roma Sud.

A concessionaire may allow supporting documentation, so preserve anything that helps reconstruct the trip. Depending on the circumstances, useful material can include:

  • navigation or phone location history showing your route
  • a rental-car pickup record from earlier that day
  • hotel, parking, fuel, or other timestamped receipts consistent with the route
  • photos with reliable time and location information
  • the motorway report itself and any receipt issued at the plaza

None of these automatically guarantees acceptance. The motorway company decides whether the evidence or declaration is sufficient. Do not invent an entry station just because it produces a plausible toll.

Do not simply pay the farthest-station amount if it is obviously wrong

If you have been charged as though you crossed half the country but you actually entered a few junctions earlier, check the concessionaire’s correction procedure before paying.

Autostrade per l’Italia states that if the full farthest-entry amount has not yet been paid, you can submit the actual entry station and request recalculation. If you have already paid the full amount, its current procedure also allows you to complete the entry self-certification and then submit a toll-refund request.

Keep proof of any eventual payment or refund request until the case is closed.

There is a deadline on a missed-payment report

Do not confuse “I can dispute the entry point” with “I can ignore the paper.”

For reports managed by Autostrade per l’Italia, the company currently states that a missed toll can be settled without additional assessment costs within 15 days from the report’s issue date. Costs can be added after that period, and continued non-payment can lead to debt-recovery procedures and potentially further consequences under the Highway Code.

Other motorway companies provide their own payment instructions, so use the deadline printed on your particular RMPP and check the issuing concessionaire’s current website.

What changes if you are driving a rental car

A rental does not make the problem disappear. The motorway system records the vehicle registration number, so an unresolved charge can eventually be associated with the rental company’s car.

Try to resolve the report yourself while you still have the vehicle, your rental agreement, and a clear memory of the route. Save a photograph of the RMPP and the final payment confirmation.

There is one complication worth knowing. Autostrade per l’Italia’s current self-certification FAQ says that when a vehicle is registered to a company, its online procedure requires additional company documentation. Rental cars are normally company-owned. If the online form asks for documents you cannot legitimately provide, contact the motorway operator and your rental company rather than entering false ownership details.

A rental company may also charge its own administrative fee if it later has to process a motorway notice. Whether it does so, and how much, comes from your rental contract rather than a single nationwide motorway rule.

If you are combining driving days with trains, buses, and city stays, it can help to organize the rest of your Italy route before setting off so you know exactly which motorway entrances and exits your driving sections use.

What if you lost the ticket but have not reached the exit yet?

There is usually no advantage in leaving the motorway early just to solve the problem. Continue to the exit you actually intended to use. Changing your route can make it harder to reconstruct the journey and does not restore the missing ticket.

If you are stopped at a service area, use the time to work out the exact entrance. Check your map history and note the station name in your phone. Then continue normally to the toll plaza.

What if the machine kept your ticket or says it cannot read it?

A damaged or unreadable ticket is different from having no ticket at all, but the immediate response is the same: do not reverse. Press the assistance button and let the operator deal with the transaction.

If you still physically have the ticket, keep it even if it is bent, demagnetized, or rejected by the machine. It may contain information that helps establish your entrance.

If an RMPP is issued despite having the original ticket, keep both together and use the concessionaire’s customer-service procedure to request verification.

Useful Italian words at the toll plaza

  • biglietto: ticket
  • biglietto di ingresso: entry ticket
  • biglietto smarrito: lost ticket
  • casello: toll station or toll plaza
  • entrata: entrance
  • uscita: exit
  • stazione di ingresso: entry toll station
  • entrata non rilevata: entry not detected
  • mancato pagamento: missed or unpaid toll
  • rapporto di mancato pagamento pedaggio: missed-toll payment report
  • richiesta assistenza: assistance request

If speaking through the intercom, Ho perso il biglietto. Sono entrato a Bologna Casalecchio is enough to explain: “I lost the ticket. I entered at Bologna Casalecchio.”

The mistake that causes more trouble than losing the ticket

Losing a small piece of paper is fixable. Trying to escape the toll lane is the part that can turn it into a much bigger problem.

Stay in your lane, use the assistance system, take the RMPP if one is issued, photograph it, and record the real entrance while you still remember it. Then deal directly with the concessionaire named on the report. The original missing ticket cannot be recreated, but the toll can often be corrected to match the journey you actually made.
