On a Trenitalia Frecciarossa, the staffed café is called FrecciaBistrò and is normally around the middle of the train. That is the closest match to an Italian train bar car. Italo works differently: there is no staffed bar, only snack and drink vending areas plus catering in certain higher classes. Intercity trains increasingly have vending machines in carriage 3, while ordinary regional trains are not a service on which you should count on finding food or coffee.

If eating on board matters, check the operator and train type rather than assuming every long-distance train has a restaurant carriage. The difference is especially important if you board early in the morning, travel late, have children with you, or arrive at the station without time to buy food.
Frecciarossa: Look for FrecciaBistrò
Trenitalia’s current Frecciarossa catering service includes a staffed FrecciaBistrò. Trenitalia describes it as being in the middle of the train and open during the journey.
Do not rely entirely on a carriage number copied from an old forum post. Frecciarossa operates with different train formations. On the Frecciarossa 1000, the bistrò is associated with carriage 3, but the safest method once aboard is simply to follow the FrecciaBistrò signs through the train.
You walk through the connecting doors between coaches until you reach the counter. There is no separate admission rule and Standard passengers can use it just as Business or Premium passengers can. Your ticket class affects what may already be included at your seat, not whether you are allowed to buy something at the bistrò.
What You Can Buy on a Frecciarossa
The selection is substantially better than a typical snack machine. Current offerings include:
- espresso and other hot drinks
- pastries and sweet snacks
- crisps and savoury snacks
- panini, tramezzini, piadine and toast
- pizza
- salads
- hot and cold first courses
- cheese and charcuterie plates
- water, juice and soft drinks
- beer, wine, sparkling wine and other alcoholic drinks
- vegetarian and selected gluten-free products
It is perfectly possible to assemble a light lunch rather than merely buying coffee. The published February 2026 FrecciaBistrò combo menu, for example, listed a breakfast combination at €5, a sandwich-based Break menu at €8, a hot-course Tradizione Italiana menu at €15, and pizza with craft beer at €8. Treat those as useful price examples rather than guaranteed prices for every future journey, since menus and stock change.
If you have a serious allergy or coeliac disease, check the individual product information rather than assuming that every item described broadly as gluten-free has the same preparation conditions.

How Payment Works at FrecciaBistrò
At the physical bistrò, order from the member of staff at the counter and pay for what you buy. These purchases are separate from your rail fare unless your service level specifically includes its own complimentary catering.
For the least troublesome setup, carry a physical payment card as well as a small amount of euro cash. Mobile wallets are convenient, but relying on a phone as your only means of payment is a poor bet whenever an onboard terminal or connection decides to have a bad afternoon.
You do not need to add a tip in order to complete the purchase. Pay the stated price and take your food either back to your seat or consume it in the space provided where available.
You May Not Need to Walk to the Bar
On principal Frecciarossa services, Trenitalia also operates Easy Bistrò. Staff may pass through the passenger coaches selling food and drinks, so waiting for the trolley can be easier if you have luggage, small children, or difficulty moving through a swaying train.
On supported Frecciarossa journeys you can also connect to the onboard Wi-Fi, open the FrecciaPlay portal and place an Easy Bistrò order. Trenitalia currently requires a minimum €5 purchase for orders made through FrecciaPlay. You choose a delivery period and pay the member of staff when the order is delivered.
This is useful if your seat is several carriages from the café. It also avoids the awkward business of trying to negotiate automatic connecting doors while holding a cappuccino and a sandwich.
Business, Premium and Executive Are Different
Do not confuse complimentary seat service with the bistrò.
Frecciarossa Business and first-class passengers receive a welcome catering service on applicable journeys, while Premium includes a smaller snack offering. Executive has a much more extensive catering service and open-bar arrangement. There are operator and route exceptions, so your ticket class should not be treated as a promise that a particular meal will appear on every short segment.
If the included snack is enough, there is obviously no need to buy anything else. If you want another coffee, a sandwich, wine, or a more substantial meal, you can still use the bistrò.
Italo Does Not Have a Staffed Bar Car
This is where many travelers go wandering down the train looking for something that is not there. Italo has no restaurant or staffed café carriage.
Instead, the operator provides vending-machine Snack Areas where passengers can buy espresso coffee, cold drinks and snacks. According to Italo’s current onboard catering information, the machines are located at:
- Italo AGV: carriages 3 and 7
- Italo EVO: carriages 3 and 6
If you see Area Snack on signs or onboard information, that is where to go.
Prima Business and Club Executive have additional food and drink service at the seat. In Prima Business, complimentary snacks and drinks are offered, although Italo states that service on very short journeys is not always guaranteed. Club Executive has a fuller catering service.
For vending purchases, follow the payment instructions displayed on the machine. Having both a physical card and some small euro notes or coins gives you a backup if your preferred method is not accepted or a machine develops a payment fault.
Intercity: Head for Carriage 3, but Have a Backup Plan
Trenitalia’s renewed daytime Intercity trains have an area ristoro, meaning refreshment area, in carriage 3. It has vending machines selling hot and cold drinks plus sweet and savoury snacks, including some gluten-free and lactose-free choices.
The useful part is that Trenitalia explicitly states that these Intercity machines accept cash and cards.
There is one important 2026 catch. Trenitalia is still completing its Intercity fleet-renewal programme and warns that vending machines may temporarily be unavailable on some trains while that work continues. So carriage 3 is the place to look, but it is not wise to board a four-hour journey with no water because you assume the machine must be working.

Intercity Notte Uses a Minibar Trolley Instead
On overnight Intercity Notte services, the setup changes again. Trenitalia provides a paid carrello minibar, or minibar trolley, carrying food and hot and cold drinks through the train. Certain sleeping and couchette products also include breakfast or other refreshments as part of the accommodation.
You therefore do not need to start exploring the sleeping cars at midnight looking for a restaurant carriage. Ask the onboard staff if you have not seen the trolley and want to know when service will reach your part of the train.
Do Not Expect Catering on an Ordinary Regional Train
For Regionale and many Regionale Veloce services, buy what you need before boarding. These trains are designed primarily for local transport, and catering is not a standard amenity you should plan around.
Major stations such as Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Bologna Centrale and Napoli Centrale have plenty of places to buy water, coffee, sandwiches and snacks. At a small station, choices may be much thinner, particularly early in the morning, late at night or on a Sunday.
A useful decision rule is simple: if your ticket says Regionale and the journey is long enough that you will want food or water, purchase it before you go to the platform.
What to Do With Your Luggage While You Get Food
Dragging a large suitcase through several coaches is usually more trouble than it is worth. The aisles and connecting doors are perfectly manageable with a handbag or small backpack but awkward with a full-size roller case.
Leave large luggage properly stored in the luggage space assigned to your coach rather than blocking the aisle. Take your phone, wallet, passport and other valuables with you. If you are traveling alone and are uncomfortable leaving a suitcase out of sight, use at-seat or trolley service when available, or buy food at the station before departure.
Do not park a suitcase in the vestibule outside the bistrò while you order. People need those spaces to pass between coaches and, during station stops, to reach the doors.
Pick the Right Time to Walk Through the Train
The easiest moment to get coffee is after the initial boarding rush has settled and well before your destination. Avoid starting a long walk through the train when your stop is next.
Station approaches are also inconvenient because passengers start collecting luggage and filling the aisles. If the announcement says prossima fermata, meaning “next stop,” and that is where you are getting off, the espresso can wait.
For a multi-city journey, you can use the Italy on Foot trip planner to organize the rest of your rail route and identify where longer journeys make it worth buying food before you board.
If the Bar, Trolley or Vending Machine Is Not Available
Onboard catering is useful, but it should never be your only plan for something medically or practically essential. Machines can be out of service, particular products can sell out, a trolley may reach you later than expected, and operational changes can affect the normal catering setup.
- Frecciarossa: try FrecciaBistrò, Easy Bistrò through FrecciaPlay, or the passing service staff.
- Italo: check the second Snack Area if your train type has two and one machine is unavailable.
- Intercity: remember that some trains may temporarily lack vending service during the 2026 fleet-renewal work.
- Regionale: assume from the start that you need to bring your own food and water.
If you need medication with food, baby supplies, allergy-safe food, or simply know that being hungry turns you into a less charming traveling companion, buy the essentials in the station. Treat the onboard café as a convenience, not as your emergency pantry.
