Last Supper Ticket Pickup: ID, Arrival Time and the Cloakroom

Go to the ticket office beside the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano 30 minutes before your reserved time, not straight to the museum entrance. Bring your digital or printed ticket or booking confirmation and an identity document. After the ticket is checked or validated, be at the museum entrance at least 15 minutes before your slot. The Last Supper ticket pickup process also gives you the chance to put unsuitable bags in the lockers before joining the timed-entry group.

Where to go for ticket pickup

The address normally shown for the museum is Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie, 2, but the ticket office is slightly around the corner. Look for Via Fratelli Ruffini, beside the Santa Maria delle Grazie complex. The museum describes the ticket office as being at the beginning of this street, only a few metres from the museum entrance.

This distinction matters because there are several doors around the complex. The prominent church entrance is for Santa Maria delle Grazie; Leonardo’s painting is in the separate museum occupying the former convent refectory. Do not stand in a church queue expecting it to lead to your timed museum admission.

If you arrive by taxi, the museum lists Via Ruffini 1 as the drop-off point, directly opposite the ticket office. You can confirm current arrangements on the official Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano visitor information page.

What you need to show at the ticket office

For current online reservations, admission tickets may already be attached to the confirmation email. Older instructions and some museum pages still describe the process as collecting a ticket. In practice, the important step is the same: you must still report to the ticket office before entering.

Have these items ready rather than searching through your phone at the counter:

  • Your admission ticket or booking documentation, either on your phone or printed.
  • An identity document matching the visitor name on the reservation.
  • Any documentation required to prove eligibility for a free or reduced ticket.

Tickets are nominative. For individual bookings made through the museum’s online or call-centre channels, the museum currently states that the visitor name cannot be changed after purchase. Each visitor should therefore check that the name entered when booking is correct.

The official rules also say that visitors must appear personally at the ticket office rather than sending one member of the party to collect or validate everybody’s admission.

Why arriving 30 minutes early really matters

The 30-minute instruction is not a suggestion to give yourself time for coffee. The museum states that visitors who do not present themselves in time can lose their right to enter.

A sensible sequence is:

  1. Reach Santa Maria delle Grazie about 40 to 45 minutes before the reservation if your journey allows it.
  2. Go first to the ticket office on Via Fratelli Ruffini.
  3. Show the ticket or booking confirmation and ID.
  4. Put any unsuitable bags or other items into a locker if required.
  5. Move to the actual museum entrance.
  6. Be there at least 15 minutes before the time printed on your ticket.

The extra ten or fifteen minutes beyond the museum’s required check-in time is simply a travel buffer. Milan traffic, a missed tram or taking the wrong exit from the metro is a poor reason to lose one of the city’s hardest reservations to replace.

What happens once you reach the museum entrance

Entry happens in controlled groups because the refectory requires tightly managed environmental conditions. Visitors pass through filtering spaces before entering the room containing Leonardo’s mural. The standard viewing period inside the refectory is 15 minutes.

That is another reason late arrivals are difficult to accommodate. This is not a conventional museum where you can simply enter five minutes later and catch up.

The cloakroom is actually a limited locker area

Suitcase with a luggage tag, the kind museums ask visitors to leave behind

Do not arrive expecting a large staffed baggage room. The storage facility is a collection of timed lockers at the ticket office, provided primarily when visitors unexpectedly arrive with bags that cannot enter the museum.

The museum specifically recommends leaving bulky luggage at your hotel or elsewhere. Locker availability is limited and cannot be treated as guaranteed luggage storage.

Current published locker sizes are:

  • 30 lockers measuring 30 × 45 × 32 cm.
  • 8 lockers measuring 25 × 36 × 32 cm.
  • 8 lockers measuring 25 × 36 × 66 cm.
  • 1 locker measuring 82 × 33 × 80 cm.
  • 1 locker measuring 40 × 33 × 80 cm.

The lockers are timed for a maximum of 60 minutes. A normal day bag may be manageable, but a large suitcase is a gamble because only a handful of lockers have substantial height. Travelers arriving directly from a train or airport should arrange proper luggage storage rather than relying on finding a suitable empty locker here.

What should stay out of the museum

Bulky luggage is not admitted, and the museum prohibits food and drinks inside. Follow staff instructions if they ask you to store a bag before admission.

Before closing your locker, keep everything you actually need during the visit with you, including your phone, glasses, wallet and payment method. The museum warns that you cannot re-enter its visitor spaces after leaving. The bookshop is inside the museum area and is available only to ticketed visitors, so do not lock away your means of payment if you intend to buy something.

Families, children and free tickets

A reservation is required for everyone, including children and infants, even when admission itself is free. Do not assume a child can simply accompany an adult without appearing on the reservation.

Free and reduced admissions may involve an eligibility check at the ticket office. Keep any relevant documentation accessible rather than packed at the bottom of a stored suitcase.

The museum is accessible to visitors with mobility difficulties. If someone in your party needs extra assistance, building additional time around the 30-minute check-in is preferable to arriving exactly at the cutoff.

If you have booked a guided tour

Read the confirmation carefully before going directly to the museum counter. A tour company may instruct you to meet a guide elsewhere around Santa Maria delle Grazie so the group can check in together. Museum-operated guided services may also have equipment or radioguides to collect.

The meeting time printed by a tour operator can therefore be earlier than the admission time shown for the refectory. Treat the earlier time as the one that matters.

If you are arranging the rest of the day around this fixed appointment, the Italy on Foot trip planner can help keep nearby sights and transport legs on the correct side of your reserved slot rather than squeezing an attraction in immediately beforehand.

What to do if your email or ticket is missing

Deal with a missing confirmation before travelling to Santa Maria delle Grazie if possible. Check the email address used for the reservation, including spam and deleted folders, and sign into the account used with the official booking service to recover the purchase details.

If you still need assistance, go to the ticket office earlier than the normal 30-minute requirement and bring the purchaser’s details, transaction information and identification. Do not assume staff can reconstruct a reservation after your entry time has already passed.

What happens if you are late

There is no useful trick here. The official rule states that failure to arrive at the required time can mean forfeiting admission. Because visitor groups and environmental filtering are scheduled precisely, staff cannot be expected to move you into the next group.

If a delayed train, taxi or metro ride puts the booking at risk, go straight to Via Fratelli Ruffini instead of visiting the church, looking for a café or joining another queue first. Explain the situation at the ticket office, but treat any accommodation they can offer as an exception rather than something you are entitled to.

For the broader booking procedure, release schedule and museum visit rules, see Italy on Foot’s Last Supper visitor guide. For actual availability, always use the museum’s current official channels rather than relying on an old timetable or screenshot.

The simplest arrival rule to remember

Think of your reservation as having two deadlines: ticket-office check-in 30 minutes before the booked time, then the museum entrance at least 15 minutes before it. Go to Via Fratelli Ruffini first, have your ticket and matching ID ready, store unsuitable bags immediately, and only then move to the entrance for your timed group.
