Most fast passenger boats from central Naples board at the Beverello Terminal beside Castel Nuovo, not at Porta di Massa. For Naples hydrofoil boarding, the safest routine is to arrive early, confirm the company and departure time, complete any required check-in, then wait for the assigned gate instead of joining a queue simply because everyone in it says they are going to Capri or Ischia. Keep your boarding pass and any luggage supplement ready until you are on the vessel.
The complication is that Naples has several ferry companies, and their check-in and baggage rules are not identical. An online booking that lets an Alilauro passenger go toward boarding may still require a Caremar or SNAV passenger to stop at the ticket office first.
First, make sure your ticket really says Molo Beverello
Molo Beverello is the central Naples terminal for hydrofoils and other fast passenger services. The rebuilt Beverello Terminal contains the ticket offices for Alilauro, Caremar, NLG and SNAV.
Do not treat every fast-looking boat as a Beverello departure. Caremar, in particular, operates different vessel types from Naples. Its timetable can show Aliscafo services from Molo Beverello while ferries and some TMV services use Napoli Porta di Massa.
The wording on your ticket wins. Look for:
- Napoli (Molo Beverello) or Napoli Beverello: go to the terminal beside Castel Nuovo.
- Napoli (Porta di Massa) or Calata Porta di Massa: you need the ferry terminal farther east inside the port.
- Aliscafo or unitร veloce: fast passenger craft.
- Traghetto: conventional ferry.
- TMV: traghetto/motonave veloce, a fast motor vessel. Do not assume this automatically means Beverello.
If you are telling a taxi driver where to go, say โMolo Beverello, terminal aliscafiโ rather than simply โportoโ. Naples’ port area is large enough for that vague instruction to cost you valuable minutes.
The boarding sequence at Molo Beverello
- Enter the terminal and identify your shipping company. The company name matters as much as the destination. Several operators can have boats for the same island within a short period.
- Check whether your booking requires a boarding pass. Do this before settling into the waiting area.
- Deal with oversized or additional luggage. If your bag exceeds the operator’s free allowance, buy the required baggage ticket before going to the boat.
- Watch the departure information. Match destination, operator and departure time, not destination alone.
- Move to the indicated gate when boarding opens. Staff normally check the ticket or QR code as passengers enter the controlled boarding area.
- Follow crew instructions at the vessel. Large bags may be directed to a luggage area rather than taken to your seat.
Boarding can begin quite close to departure. A quiet-looking gate 25 minutes beforehand does not necessarily mean you are in the wrong place. Conversely, a long queue is not proof that it is your boat.
An online ticket does not mean the same thing with every company
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make at Beverello. Check-in rules are set by the carrier, not by the terminal as a whole.
Alilauro
Alilauro accepts its ticket in electronic form, including the QR code on a phone, so printing is not required. The company instructs passengers to be at the port at least 30 minutes before departure. Its current boarding information is available in the Alilauro FAQ.
SNAV
SNAV currently requires passengers to obtain a boarding pass at the port ticket office at least 30 minutes before departure. Its online pre-check-in can speed up the process, but it does not remove the need to complete the port check-in procedure. The company also tells passengers to reconfirm their departure time and gate before sailing. See the SNAV Gulf of Naples conditions.
NLG
NLG normally distinguishes between the emailed mail-ticket and the boarding pass. Naples is one of the ports where NLG currently permits check-in directly at boarding, however. Its online rules otherwise use a 20-minute check-in deadline, after which a reservation can lapse and the passenger may be placed on a waiting list. Check the latest instructions in the NLG online ticketing regulations.
Caremar
Caremar says an online ticket is a valid travel document, but passengers must still obtain the boarding card that gives access to the vessel. This is done at the departure ticket office or, where provided, at a check-in machine. Caremar’s conditions call for passengers to present themselves for boarding at least 60 minutes before departure. Its official FAQ explains the current check-in procedure.
Practical rule: do not walk straight past the ticket offices merely because you have a PDF or QR code. First establish what your particular company expects.
How the Beverello gates work
The new terminal separates the ticketing and waiting functions from the controlled access to the quay. Gate or berth assignments can depend on the vessel and the traffic on the waterfront, so there is no useful permanent rule such as โCapri always leaves from this gate.โ
Instead, identify your sailing using three pieces of information:
- the company, such as NLG or Alilauro;
- the destination, such as Capri, Procida, Ischia, Casamicciola or Sorrento;
- the departure time.
This matters particularly for Ischia. Ischia Porto, Casamicciola and services continuing to Forio are not interchangeable destinations. If your hotel is expecting you at Ischia Porto, do not board a Casamicciola service just because someone calls out โIschia.โ
Useful Italian words around the terminal include partenza (departure), imbarco (boarding), biglietteria (ticket office), varco (access gate), banchina (quay), ritardo (delay) and corsa cancellata or soppressa (cancelled service).
Luggage allowances are set by the shipping company
There is no single Gulf of Naples hydrofoil baggage allowance. A suitcase accepted free by one carrier can require a supplement with another.
- NLG: one free piece up to 50 x 30 x 15 cm and 5 kg. Larger or heavier baggage requires the appropriate baggage ticket. NLG publishes the limit on its luggage information page.
- Alilauro: one piece up to 50 x 35 x 20 cm and 9 kg is included. Additional, oversized or overweight pieces require a separate luggage ticket.
- SNAV: one free piece up to 50 x 35 x 20 cm and 9 kg. Extra or oversized baggage requires a luggage ticket, which SNAV says must be bought before boarding rather than aboard the vessel.
- Caremar fast craft: its current carriage conditions specify one free bag up to 50 x 40 x 20 cm and 10 kg on fast vessels. Its conventional ferry and TMV allowance is different, another reason to check the vessel category printed in the schedule.
A standard airline cabin suitcase is therefore not automatically โhand luggageโ for every operator. NLG’s 5 kg limit is considerably tighter than many airline allowances.
What happens to a larger suitcase on board?
Paying the baggage supplement does not turn a suitcase into checked airline luggage. You normally remain responsible for carrying it to the vessel and collecting it when you disembark. Crew can direct larger items to designated storage areas, especially when keeping the bag beside your seat would block an aisle.
Do not place suitcases on passenger seats or in passageways. Alilauro, NLG and SNAV all expressly require luggage to be kept where it does not obstruct passengers or crew.
If your boat trip is one part of a longer Campania itinerary, the Italy on Foot trip planner can help you keep the train, port transfer and island stay in the right order. Leave a genuine buffer before the sailing rather than treating two independently booked timetables as a protected connection.
There is luggage storage inside the Beverello Terminal
The terminal currently has an automated luggage-storage facility. This can be useful if you are making a day trip and do not actually need your suitcase on the island.
Do not confuse terminal storage with a ferry baggage check. A bag left in the terminal stays in Naples. A bag traveling with you still has to comply with your carrier’s allowance and ticket rules.
How early should you arrive?
The answer depends on your company:
- Caremar: plan around its 60-minute presentation requirement.
- Alilauro: at least 30 minutes.
- SNAV: boarding-pass collection at least 30 minutes before departure.
- NLG: its general online procedure uses a 20-minute check-in deadline, although Naples permits boarding-area check-in.
For a first trip through Beverello, 45 to 60 minutes early is the sensible target, especially in summer, on weekends or if you have a full-size suitcase. That gives you time to discover that your QR code needs exchanging, purchase a luggage supplement or correct a wrong assumption about the departure port.
Buying a ticket on the day needs more margin. Popular departures to Capri and the islands can sell out, so arriving early does not guarantee a seat if you have not already booked.
If you arrive at the wrong Naples port
Do not wait in hope that your boat will appear. Show the ticket to terminal staff and confirm the port immediately.
If the ticket says Porta di Massa and you are at Beverello, you need to move along the port to the correct terminal. If departure is close, a taxi is usually safer than trying to improvise the port shuttle or walk with luggage. The reverse applies if you have gone to Porta di Massa for a Beverello hydrofoil.
A common cause of this mistake is searching online for โNaples ferry portโ rather than reading the departure location printed on the ticket.
If you reach the gate after check-in has closed
Go directly to the shipping company’s desk. Do not try to slip through another queue or persuade the crew of a different operator to take you.
Late-arrival treatment varies. NLG states that after its check-in deadline an online reservation can lapse, with the passenger placed on a waiting list and boarded only if space remains. Alilauro can refuse boarding after its presentation deadline where normal or safe operation would be affected. Caremar says that after its required presentation time boarding is no longer guaranteed.
A ticket for the 10:40 sailing is not a general ticket for whichever Capri boat leaves next. Unless your fare specifically has flexible or inter-operator conditions, speak to the issuing company before changing boats.
What to do when weather cancels the hydrofoil
Fast craft are more exposed to rough-sea disruption than conventional ferries. If your departure is cancelled, go to your carrier’s ticket office before buying a completely new journey.
Ask two questions: โProssima partenza?โ for the next departure, and โPosso cambiare il biglietto?โ to ask whether the ticket can be changed.
The available remedy depends on the operator, ticket and reason for disruption. Carriers publish procedures for rebooking, alternative transport and refunds, and EU passenger-rights rules may also apply. A conventional ferry from Porta di Massa can sometimes remain an option when a fast service is disrupted, but do not assume your existing ticket will automatically be valid on it.
Do not build a tight flight, high-speed train or separately booked international connection immediately after an island crossing. Sea conditions can turn a neat 50-minute journey into a much longer recovery exercise.
Strollers and reduced mobility
The rebuilt Beverello Terminal has ramps and designated assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. If you need formal assistance for boarding or disembarkation, arrange it with the shipping company in advance rather than relying solely on help at the gate. Caremar currently requests at least 48 hours’ notice for passengers requiring dedicated special assistance.
With a stroller, keep bags separate enough that the stroller can be folded if crew request it. The final step onto a fast craft uses the vessel’s boarding arrangement rather than an airport-style level jet bridge, so follow crew instructions rather than trying to move a stroller and several loose bags at once.
A five-minute check before you leave your hotel
- Read the exact Naples departure port on the ticket.
- Check the company as well as the destination.
- Know whether you need a boarding pass from the ticket office.
- Measure or weigh larger luggage if you are close to the carrier’s limit.
- Buy any required luggage supplement before boarding.
- Bring the ID or eligibility documents required by your fare.
- Allow the carrier’s actual check-in time, not just enough time to reach the pier.
- At the terminal, follow the displayed sailing and staff instructions instead of assuming a permanent gate.
