There are two official taxi points at Roma Termini: the main one in Piazza dei Cinquecento, directly in front of the station, and a second one at the Via Marsala 27 entrance. For most arrivals, the Rome Termini taxi rank to use is Piazza dei Cinquecento. Exit through the main station hall and, once outside, look to the right for the taxi loading area. Do not accept rides from people approaching you inside the station or around the exits.
RFI, the Italian rail infrastructure manager, currently lists both official Termini taxi points and their directions. This matters because older online guides may still describe temporary arrangements used while Piazza dei Cinquecento was being rebuilt.
Where the official taxi queues are at Termini
Piazza dei Cinquecento: the main taxi point
This is the easiest choice for most passengers arriving on long-distance, high-speed, and airport trains.
- Leave the platform and follow signs for Uscita, meaning exit.
- Head toward the main station hall and Piazza dei Cinquecento.
- Exit through the front of the station.
- Once outside, the official RFI directions place the Punto Taxi on the right-hand side.
- Join the passenger queue and board at the designated loading point.
The taxi area is part of the redesigned Piazza dei Cinquecento transport layout. You should be looking for an organized line of white licensed taxis, not individual drivers waiting beside the pedestrian exits.

Via Marsala 27: the useful second option
Termini also has an official taxi point at Via Marsala 27. Follow station signs specifically for Via Marsala rather than simply taking whichever side exit looks closest.
RFI’s directions are particularly useful here: leave through the Via Marsala 27 entrance and the taxi point is on your left after you exit.
This rank can be convenient if your platform brings you naturally toward the Marsala side, or if the passenger queue at the front of the station is unusually long. Taxi availability changes constantly, though, so walking to the second point is not a guarantee of a shorter wait.
What if you come out on Via Giolitti?
Via Giolitti is a major station entrance, but RFI currently lists the official taxi points at Piazza dei Cinquecento and Via Marsala, not Via Giolitti.
If you find yourself heading toward Giolitti, do not assume that a car or driver offering a ride there is part of the station taxi line. Follow the station signs back toward Piazza dei Cinquecento, or follow the internal wayfinding toward Via Marsala 27.

How to recognize an official Rome taxi
Rome’s licensed taxis are easy to identify once you know what to check. According to Roma Servizi per la Mobilitร , an authorized city taxi should have:
- a white body;
- a rooftop sign reading TAXI;
- the Roma Capitale symbol on the front doors;
- a taxi licence number displayed on the vehicle;
- the licence number repeated inside the car.
The most important distinction at Termini is between a taxi you take from the organized public rank and someone who walks up to you offering transportation. A person saying “Taxi?” inside the concourse, beside the station doors, or while you are pulling a suitcase across the pavement is not the official queue.
Keep walking to the marked taxi point.
How the queue works
At the official stand, join the passenger line rather than approaching whichever taxi you prefer. Board at the designated loading position when it is your turn and give the driver your exact destination.
If your accommodation has a similar name to another hotel, show the full street address on your phone. In Rome, saying only a hotel name can be less useful than giving the street and number, for example:
Via del Governo Vecchio, numero 25, per favore.
If you need a larger vehicle because you have several passengers, a stroller, or bulky luggage, tell the person coordinating the queue or the next driver rather than squeezing everything into a standard car.
Metered fares, starting charges, and luggage
For an ordinary ride from Termini to a hotel or other address in Rome, the taxi normally uses the meter. Roma Servizi per la Mobilitร currently lists these starting charges:
- โฌ3.50 Monday to Friday from 06:00 to 22:00;
- โฌ5.00 on Saturdays and public holidays from 06:00 to 22:00;
- โฌ7.50 from 22:00 to 06:00.
That means the meter does not necessarily begin at โฌ0.00. What you want to see is the correct official starting amount and an active meter for a normal city journey.
The current city tariff also says the first piece of luggage is free. Each additional item larger than 35 x 25 x 50 cm carries a โฌ1 supplement. In vehicles licensed to carry more than four passengers, a โฌ5 supplement applies to each passenger from the fifth onward.

Going from Termini to Fiumicino or Ciampino
Airport journeys are different from ordinary metered trips. Termini is inside the area covered by Rome’s published airport fares, so a direct taxi journey from the station to the airport currently has a fixed price of:
- โฌ55 per vehicle to Fiumicino Airport;
- โฌ40 per vehicle to Ciampino Airport.
These official fixed fares include supplements. They apply to direct journeys under the city’s tariff conditions. Adding another pickup, making a substantial detour, or changing the journey can affect whether the predetermined fare applies.

Can you pay by card?
Rome’s taxi regulations require vehicles to have a functioning POS terminal and accept electronic payment. The city’s passenger guidance nevertheless recommends telling the driver before departure how you intend to pay.
A simple phrase is:
Posso pagare con carta? meaning “Can I pay by card?”
At the end of the journey, ask for a receipt. Una ricevuta, per favore is all you need. Keeping the receipt is particularly useful if you later realize you left something in the taxi, because identifying the vehicle becomes much easier.
If the taxi line is very long
A queue outside Termini can grow quickly after several trains arrive close together. You have three sensible options:
- Stay in the Piazza dei Cinquecento queue if taxis are arriving steadily. A long passenger line can still move reasonably well when several cars are loading.
- Check the Via Marsala 27 taxi point if you can comfortably move your luggage and the front queue appears badly backed up.
- Request a licensed taxi rather than accepting an unsolicited car. Rome’s municipal ChiamaTaxi service can be reached on 060609.
Roma Mobilitร currently lists a โฌ5 fixed supplement for a radiotaxi call, so walking to a rank can be cheaper when practical.
If you use a taxi app or telephone service, be precise about the pickup location. “Termini” is a large station. Saying Via Marsala 27 or another exact entrance is much better than expecting a driver to guess which side of the building you are standing on.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals
Rome has taxis operating overnight, but do not assume that the station setup looks exactly the same at 02:00 as it does at 14:00.
RFI currently lists both the Piazza dei Cinquecento and Via Marsala taxi points with hours of 05:30 to 01:00. If your train arrives outside that window, check the main rank first if it is convenient and clearly active, but have a backup ready rather than wandering around the station looking for someone offering a ride.
If no organized queue is operating, use the municipal ChiamaTaxi service or another licensed taxi booking service and give an exact pickup point. Stay in a well-lit station entrance area while you wait.
Luggage, strollers, and reduced mobility
The Piazza dei Cinquecento taxi area was redesigned with accessibility in mind, and the main route from the station concourse to the front taxi area avoids the need to drag luggage through side streets.
With a stroller or several suitcases, use the main exit unless the Via Marsala point is substantially more convenient for your platform. Keep bags together while waiting, especially when moving through the busy station doors.
If a passenger needs to remain in a wheelchair during the journey, do not assume the next standard taxi in line will be suitable. Rome has taxis specially equipped for passengers with disabilities, but vehicle type matters. Arrange an appropriate vehicle through a taxi booking service when possible, particularly for a timed airport or train connection.
Common mistakes at Termini
- Following the first person who says “taxi.” The official service is at the marked rank.
- Walking out of Via Giolitti and assuming any waiting car is a public taxi. Follow signs to one of RFI’s listed taxi points.
- Agreeing to an unexplained flat price for a normal city journey. Ordinary trips use the meter unless an official predetermined fare applies.
- Expecting the meter to start at zero. Rome has official fixed starting charges depending on the day and time.
- Forgetting the airport fixed fare. Confirm the applicable official tariff before leaving Termini.
- Not keeping the receipt. It is useful for checking the charge and tracing a vehicle if you leave something behind.
- Giving only a hotel name. Have the full address ready, including the street number.

The safest decision rule is simple: follow station signs to Piazza dei Cinquecento or Via Marsala 27, join the organized passenger line, and use a white taxi displaying the Roma Capitale markings and licence number. If someone tries to intercept you before you reach that point, keep walking.
