If your cruise ticket says Venice, do not automatically tell your taxi driver to take you to “the Venice cruise terminal.”

There is no longer one terminal that handles every cruise ship.

In 2026, cruise ships serving Venice can use several different locations:

• Marittima
• Marghera
• Fusina
• San Basilio
• Chioggia

And there is one more name that causes enormous confusion:

Ravenna.

Some cruise companies market sailings from “Ravenna (Venice)”, even though Ravenna is not in Venice and its cruise terminal is roughly 2.5 hours away by road.

This is probably the single most important thing to know before starting or ending a cruise in Venice:

Check the exact port and terminal listed by your cruise line, not simply the word Venice on the itinerary.

Venice’s cruise system changed substantially after restrictions were introduced on large cruise ships entering the historic lagoon. For the 2026 season, Venezia Terminal Passeggeri confirms that ships are using a network of berths at Fusina, Porto Marghera, San Basilio, Marittima and Chioggia.

Here is how each one works.

Where do cruise ships dock in Venice in 2026?

The easiest way to understand Venice cruise terminals is this:

Marittima

This is the traditional Venice cruise terminal beside the historic city.

Smaller cruise ships can still dock here.

More importantly, Marittima also acts as the check-in and passenger-processing point for some larger ships physically docked in Marghera.

Marghera

Large cruise ships can berth at the Liguria and Lombardia quays in Porto Marghera, on the mainland.

If your ship is docked in Marghera, VTP’s current passenger instructions say you should go to Marittima first, complete check-in there and then use the dedicated free shuttle provided to reach the ship.

This distinction matters enormously.

Do not simply look at the ship’s physical location on a marine-tracking app and decide to take yourself to an industrial quay in Marghera.

Fusina

Fusina is another mainland cruise location southwest of Venice.

Unlike Marghera, VTP’s current passenger FAQ says that check-in and boarding for ships at Fusina are carried out directly at Fusina.

The Fusina cruise terminal has been fully operational since August 2024 and is an increasingly important part of Venice’s cruise system.

San Basilio

San Basilio is in Venice itself, on the western side of Dorsoduro.

It handles smaller vessels, and passengers check in directly there.

Chioggia

Some cruises use the terminal at Isola dei Saloni in Chioggia, much farther south at the bottom of the Venetian Lagoon.

If your ticket says Chioggia, you are not embarking from central Venice.

Ravenna

Ravenna is a completely separate cruise port in Emilia-Romagna.

If your itinerary says Ravenna (Venice), do not go to Marittima, Fusina or any other Venice terminal.

Go to Ravenna.

Why did Venice’s cruise terminals change?

For years, large cruise ships entered Venice through the lagoon and passed close to the historic city.

That changed in 2021.

Italian legislation restricted large ships from routes through the protected Venice lagoon environment, including the San Marco Basin and Giudecca Canal.

The result is the cruise system you see today.

Smaller vessels can still use central Venice facilities, while larger vessels are distributed among alternative mainland berths and terminals.

For 2026, Venezia Terminal Passeggeri says cruise operations will continue across:

Fusina

Porto Marghera’s Liguria and Lombardia quays

San Basilio

Marittima for ships allowed under the 25,000-GT restriction

and

Chioggia

The company expects approximately 543,000 passengers and 366 cruise calls across Venice and Chioggia during 2026.

So if you cruised from Venice 10 years ago and remember walking onto a huge ship at Marittima, do not assume your next Venice cruise will work the same way.

It probably won’t.

Venice Marittima Cruise Terminal

Venezia Marittima is the terminal most travelers imagine when they search for the “Venice cruise port.”

It is immediately beside the historic city, close to Piazzale Roma and Venezia Santa Lucia railway station.

The address used by Venezia Terminal Passeggeri is:

Marittima has multiple passenger terminal buildings and seven berths. VTP currently lists five cruise terminals within the facility.

You may see terminal numbers such as:

• Terminal 103
• Terminal 107/108
• Terminal 109/110
• Terminal 117
• Terminal 123
• Isonzo 1 and 2

Do not worry about memorizing those.

Your cruise company should tell you which building to use.

Your job is to get to Marittima.

The terminal number is the final detail.

How far is Marittima from Piazzale Roma?

Very close.

A current 2026 VTP document puts Marittima approximately:

500 meters from Piazzale Roma

1 kilometer from Venezia Santa Lucia railway station

and

13 kilometers from Venice Marco Polo Airport.

Piazzale Roma is important because it is Venice’s main road-transport hub.

Buses, taxis and private cars can reach it.

Beyond this point, Venice becomes the Venice you are picturing:

water and feet.

The People Mover to Marittima

The easiest public-transport connection between Piazzale Roma and the cruise port is the People Mover.

It follows this route:

Piazzale Roma → Marittima → Tronchetto

The trip from Piazzale Roma to Marittima takes only a few minutes. ACTV’s current fare is €1.50 each way, and services normally operate around every 10 minutes.

Current operating hours are generally:

April to October weekdays: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
April to October holidays: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Winter holiday hours are shorter.

Check again before the cruise because maintenance closures occasionally occur, usually with replacement buses provided.

Can you walk from Piazzale Roma to Marittima?

Yes.

But whether you want to do it with cruise luggage is another matter.

The distance itself is not large.

If you have one carry-on, walking is perfectly reasonable.

If you have three suitcases, formalwear, two children and enough clothing to survive an Atlantic crossing despite boarding a seven-night Mediterranean cruise, take the People Mover or taxi.

Venice will provide plenty of walking later.

How to get from Venice Santa Lucia train station to the cruise terminal

If your cruise check-in is at Marittima, arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia by train is quite straightforward.

When you leave the station, cross the Ponte della Costituzione, also known as the Calatrava Bridge, toward Piazzale Roma.

Venice Airport’s official transport information describes Santa Lucia as roughly a five-minute walk from Piazzale Roma.

From Piazzale Roma:

Option 1: Take the People Mover one stop to Marittima.

Option 2: Take a land taxi for the very short road journey.

Option 3: Walk if your luggage is manageable.

VTP also lists water taxis directly from the Santa Lucia area to the cruise terminals.

A private water taxi is considerably more expensive than the People Mover.

It is also considerably more Venice.

Whether that is worth the money is between you and your cruise budget.

How to get from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Marittima

For Marittima, you have several good options.

Taxi

Venice Airport’s current transport information lists a €45 land-taxi fare to the cruise ship terminal.

Always confirm the current fare and destination before leaving the airport.

That fare is relevant to the Venice cruise terminal area, not automatically to Fusina, Chioggia or Ravenna.

Airport bus + People Mover

This is the cheaper option.

Both:

ACTV Line 5

and

ATVO’s express service

connect Marco Polo Airport with Piazzale Roma.

From Piazzale Roma, take the People Mover to Marittima.

This works particularly well if you are traveling fairly light.

It becomes less charming as the number of suitcases increases.

Private transfer

If you are a family or larger group, a prearranged vehicle can make sense.

Just make sure the transfer company knows your actual cruise check-in location rather than simply “Venice port.”

That phrase is no longer precise enough.

Porto Marghera Cruise Berths

Here is where Venice cruise logistics become confusing.

A ship can be physically docked in Marghera while you, the passenger, are supposed to report to Marittima in Venice.

VTP currently operates larger-ship berths at:

Liguria Quay

and

Lombardia Quay

in Porto Marghera.

The current port infrastructure allows ships up to around 300 meters at these quays.

If my ship is in Marghera, where do I check in?

Marittima.

This is important enough to repeat.

Venezia Terminal Passeggeri’s current passenger instructions say:

passengers whose ship is docked in Marghera should go to the Marittima Cruise Port, complete check-in at the assigned terminal and then use the dedicated free shuttle to the ship.

Follow your cruise line’s instructions if they give you anything more specific.

Do not independently arrange a taxi to the Liguria or Lombardia industrial quay unless the cruise company explicitly tells you to do so.

Those berths are not functioning like a normal downtown passenger terminal where you simply arrive with luggage and look for a check-in desk.

How long does the Marittima-to-Marghera transfer take?

The exact time depends on operations, traffic and which berth is being used.

Treat the shuttle as part of your embarkation process, not as something you need to organize separately.

This is also why arriving at the correct check-in time matters.

Your ship may be visible several kilometers away.

That does not mean boarding is happening where you can see it.

Fusina Cruise Terminal

Fusina has become one of the most important pieces of Venice’s new cruise system.

It is on the mainland, southwest of historic Venice.

In 2026 VTP describes Fusina as a central part of its operations and says the terminal has been fully operational since August 2024.

Fusina currently has two cruise berths.

VTP lists maximum ship lengths of approximately:

250 meters at FU4

and

210 meters at FU3.

Where do I check in for a Fusina cruise?

At Fusina itself.

VTP’s passenger FAQ says that when a vessel is docked at Fusina, check-in and embarkation are performed directly at the dedicated terminal there.

This differs from Marghera.

That is why the phrase “my ship is on the mainland” still does not tell you where to go.

Marghera ship: usually check in at Marittima.

Fusina ship: check in at Fusina.

Small distinction.

Very large consequences when you are carrying four suitcases.

How do you get to Fusina Cruise Terminal?

Fusina is accessible by road from the mainland.

VTP’s driving instructions direct vehicles toward the SS309 Romea and then Via dell’Elettronica and Via Autostrade del Mare for the cruise terminal.

For cruise passengers coming from Venice or the airport, I would strongly consider:

• cruise-line transfer
• taxi
• private transfer

rather than trying to improvise several pieces of local transport with luggage.

Is there a boat between Fusina and Venice?

Yes, although this should not be confused with your cruise-line transfer.

A separate passenger-boat service, Line 16, runs between the Fusina area and Zattere in Venice.

The crossing takes around 25 to 30 minutes. Current standard fares are €10 one way or €15 return.

It can be useful if you are staying around Fusina and want to visit Venice.

But I would not use it as the basis of your cruise embarkation plan unless your cruise company confirms that it suits your terminal and luggage arrangements.

A sightseeing ferry and a cruise embarkation transfer are not automatically the same thing.

San Basilio Cruise Terminal

San Basilio is the terminal that many travelers would probably choose if cruise-port convenience were the only consideration.

It is actually inside Venice, on the western side of Dorsoduro.

The terminal handles smaller vessels allowed to operate within the historic lagoon system.

VTP currently lists:

two berths

and

one passenger terminal at San Basilio.

How do you get to San Basilio?

From Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia, VTP lists three main options:

ACTV water bus, using the San Basilio or nearby Santa Marta stops.

Land taxi, where road access permits, with VTP describing the trip from Piazzale Roma as around two minutes.

Walking, around 15 minutes from Piazzale Roma.

If I were staying in Dorsoduro with light luggage, walking could be easiest.

If you have cruise-sized luggage, remember something basic about Venice:

a 15-minute walk can include bridges.

Bridges have stairs.

Suitcases suddenly develop personalities on stairs.

Chioggia Cruise Terminal

Now we leave central Venice completely.

Chioggia is a separate historic town at the southern end of the Venetian Lagoon.

The cruise terminal is at:

Isola dei Saloni

VTP currently lists one cruise berth there, capable of accommodating ships around 228 meters long, subject to maritime-authority approval.

Passengers check in directly at Chioggia when their ship is based there.

Is Chioggia the same as Venice cruise port?

No.

It is part of the wider Venice and Chioggia port system operated by Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, but geographically it is a different place.

If your cruise ticket says:

Chioggia

do not travel to Piazzale Roma and assume you are almost there.

You aren’t.

VTP’s road instructions lead to the cruise port through Via Isola Saloni.

For embarkation from Chioggia, a cruise-line transfer or prebooked road transfer from Venice is usually far less stressful than constructing your own luggage-heavy combination of local services.

Is Ravenna a Venice cruise terminal?

No.

And this is probably the most expensive mistake in this entire article if you get it wrong.

Royal Caribbean, for example, currently markets 2026 sailings as departing from:

“Ravenna (Venice), Italy.”

But the actual terminal is:

Terminal Crociere – Porto Corsini
Ravenna

Royal Caribbean puts travel time at roughly:

2.5 hours by car from Venice

and

3 hours by bus from Venice Marco Polo Airport.

Royal Caribbean’s current cruise pages likewise describe Venice City Center as approximately 2.5 hours from Ravenna Cruise Port.

That is not a suburb.

That is a transfer.

Celebrity also operates cruises directly from Ravenna in 2026.

If your cruise says Ravenna (Venice)

Book your transport to Ravenna.

Do not go to:

Marittima.

Marghera.

Fusina.

San Basilio.

Chioggia.

None of them.

Ravenna is in a different region.

If your ship leaves at 5 p.m. and you discover this at 1:30 p.m. beside Venice’s People Mover, your day has just become considerably more exciting than anyone wanted.

Which Venice cruise terminal does MSC use?

This is exactly the kind of question for which I would not give a permanent one-terminal answer.

Cruise berths can vary by:

• ship
• date
• ship size
• port operations
• itinerary

The same principle applies to:

• MSC Cruises
• Viking
• Azamara
• Oceania
• Regent
• Norwegian
• Royal Caribbean
• Celebrity
• other operators

Venice’s 2026 season involves 30 cruise companies and 55 vessels, distributed among several different terminals and berths.

So rather than searching:

“Where does MSC dock in Venice?”

search:

“[your exact ship name] Venice terminal [your sailing date]”

And then confirm it through the cruise company’s own travel documents.

Your boarding pass outranks a generic travel article.

Including this one.

Which Venice cruise terminal does Viking use?

Viking is also not something I would permanently attach to one berth.

The 2026 Venice cruise season officially began with Viking Star arriving at Fusina on March 16, 2026.

That tells you Fusina is currently used by Viking.

It does not guarantee every Viking call will use exactly the same berth forever.

Check your individual sailing.

Can large cruise ships still dock in central Venice?

Generally, the very large ships people remember seeing beside historic Venice no longer operate through the center in the same way.

Marittima remains an active passenger port, but vessels using its central berths are subject to the restrictions introduced in 2021.

The larger ships are instead handled through facilities including Marghera and Fusina, while Marittima can still play a passenger-processing role.

That is the strange part of Venice’s current cruise system:

Your ship and your check-in desk may not be in the same place.

How early should you arrive at a Venice cruise terminal?

Follow the embarkation time assigned by your cruise line.

This matters particularly in Venice because passengers may need additional transfers between the check-in terminal and ship.

If the cruise line gives you a boarding window of:

12:30 to 1:00 p.m.

I would not plan to arrive in Venice at 12:45 p.m. and hope Italian transport develops a sudden interest in your personal schedule.

For a cruise beginning after an international flight, I would strongly prefer to arrive in Venice the day before.

This becomes even more important if your cruise actually departs from:

Chioggia

or especially

Ravenna.

A delayed morning flight is annoying.

A delayed morning flight followed by discovering your “Venice” ship is 150 kilometers away is considerably more memorable.

Where should you stay before a Venice cruise?

This depends entirely on your terminal.

For Marittima or a Marghera ship that checks in at Marittima

Stay near:

Piazzale Roma

Santa Lucia

or the western side of Venice.

This gives you easy access to the People Mover and avoids dragging luggage across half the city.

For San Basilio

Dorsoduro can be particularly convenient.

For Fusina

You can still stay in Venice, but leave enough time for a mainland transfer.

Mestre can also make logistical sense if your priority is embarkation rather than waking up beside a canal.

For Chioggia

Consider staying in Chioggia itself the night before if you want the least stressful embarkation morning.

For Ravenna

Stay in Ravenna.

This is the one I feel strongest about.

If your ship departs Ravenna at 5 p.m., spending the previous night in central Venice and attempting a same-day transfer is possible.

But if you have already had two days in Venice, moving to Ravenna the night before removes an impressive number of things that could go wrong.

Should you stay near Venice Santa Lucia before a cruise?

For a Marittima check-in, yes, it can be very convenient.

But look at the exact walking route to your hotel.

Venice has bridges.

Google Maps counts meters.

It does not count the emotional effect of lifting a 23-kilogram suitcase over your sixth bridge.

If you are traveling specifically for a cruise, I would prioritize:

few bridges

over

romantic canal view 18 minutes away.

You can have romance after luggage drop.

Can taxis take you to the Venice cruise terminal?

Land taxis can reach Marittima, because the terminal area has road access.

They can also reach mainland terminals such as Fusina and road-accessible facilities in Chioggia.

What land taxis cannot do is drive through the pedestrian heart of Venice to your hotel beside the Rialto Bridge.

Venice is not being difficult.

There simply isn’t a road.

VTP describes Marittima as unusual within Venice because it can be reached both by land and by water.

This is one reason the terminal remains such an important passenger hub even after larger ships were moved elsewhere.

Can you take a water taxi to the Venice cruise terminal?

For central Venice terminals, yes.

VTP lists private water taxis among the options for reaching the cruise port, including direct connections from the Santa Lucia station area.

A water taxi is not cheap.

But if you have four passengers and substantial luggage, the calculation becomes more reasonable.

And there is something deeply satisfying about arriving at your cruise embarkation by boat.

Possibly because you have not yet spent a week on another, much larger boat.

Is there luggage storage at Venice cruise port?

Venezia Terminal Passeggeri provides passenger facilities including waiting rooms, information points, Wi-Fi and luggage-related services within Marittima.

Individual terminals have their own arrangements. For example, the Isonzo terminal lists a left-luggage and lost-and-found service available during cruise operations.

Do not assume cruise-port luggage storage works like a railway station locker that is open all day every day.

Services can follow ship operations.

If you need to store bags for several hours before or after a cruise, confirm opening times for your specific date.

Can you park at the Venice cruise terminal?

Yes.

VTP operates official cruise-passenger parking at Marittima, and advance reservations are available.

If you are embarking elsewhere, check the instructions for your terminal before booking parking.

Again:

parking at “Venice cruise port” is not automatically useful when your ship is departing from Chioggia.

Does Venice’s Access Fee apply to cruise passengers?

This question depends on whether you actually enter Venice’s historic city, not merely whether you use the cruise terminal.

During the 2026 Access Fee trial, the City of Venice specifically excluded people who remained only within areas such as Stazione Marittima, Tronchetto, Piazzale Roma and certain transport corridors without entering the Ancient City.

However, as of July 27, 2026, the 2026 trial period has ended.

The City currently says visitors can enter Venice without paying or requesting an exemption for the remainder of 2026 unless new rules are introduced.

If you are reading this for a future cruise season, check Venice’s official Access Fee site again.

This is exactly the kind of rule that should never be copied blindly from a three-year-old travel article.

Use whatever is printed in your cruise documents.

For a ship at Marghera, do not automatically navigate to Marghera.

I cannot emphasize this enough.

The Venice cruise terminal mistake I would avoid

Imagine this:

You look up your ship online.

It is docked in Porto Marghera.

You call a taxi.

You proudly tell the driver:

“Porto Marghera.”

You arrive beside an industrial port.

Your actual check-in desk is at Marittima on the other side of the bridge.

Your cruise company has already arranged a shuttle from there.

This is not how I would begin a holiday.

The terminal printed on your boarding instructions is more important than where a ship-tracking website says the vessel is physically sitting.

The one thing to check before leaving your hotel

Do not ask:

“Where is the Venice cruise port?”

Ask:

“What exact terminal does my ship use today, and where does my cruise line want me to check in?”

In the old days, those questions often produced the same answer.

In 2026, they may not.

Your ship could be in Marghera while your suitcase needs to be at Marittima.

It could be in Fusina.

It could be 50 kilometers south in Chioggia.

Or your supposedly Venice cruise could actually be waiting for you in Ravenna.

Five minutes spent reading the boarding documents carefully can save you a taxi ride, considerable panic and a story you really do not need to bring home from Italy.
