Housed in a villa inside Rome’s Villa Borghese park, the Galleria Borghese feels more like an over-the-top private residence than a conventional museum. The collection was shaped by the Borghese family in the 17th century and is especially famous for its marble sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His Apollo and Daphne, David and The Rape of Proserpina seem to freeze movement in stone, with twisting bodies and impossibly delicate details. Painting lovers will find masterpieces by Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael and others hanging in frescoed rooms framed by gilded stucco and mirrors. Because numbers are strictly limited, every visit is on a timed ticket, usually giving you two hours inside; this keeps the galleries relatively uncrowded compared with other major sights. Many travelers pair a morning or afternoon slot with a stroll or picnic in Villa Borghese afterwards. Bags and large items must be checked, and photos without flash are generally allowed, but always confirm the latest rules on the official site.
