Villa Cimbrone’s gardens are one of the Amalfi Coast’s most celebrated viewpoints and a pilgrimage spot for romantics, photographers and garden lovers. Perched on a rocky spur high above the sea, the estate combines manicured paths, sculptures and follies with wild Mediterranean vegetation and that famous ‘Terrace of Infinity’ (Terrazza dell’Infinito) overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. The approach from Ravello’s centre is part of the experience: a slightly uphill walk along narrow lanes leads to the villa entrance, where a ticket grants access to the gardens (the historic building is now a luxury hotel and not generally open to non-guests). Inside, winding alleys lead past pergolas draped in wisteria, shaded viewpoints and formal beds punctuated by classical statues and architectural fragments. The highlight is the Terrazza dell’Infinito, a long belvedere lined with marble busts that appear to float between sky and sea. On clear days, the view stretches along the coastline and far out over the water, with boats reduced to specks. The terrace is especially magical at golden hour, though it can be busy; visit early morning for more solitude. Elsewhere in the grounds, you’ll find secluded benches, small temples and a mix of ornamental and native planting. The atmosphere is both cultivated and slightly wild, a legacy of early 20th-century redesigns that blended English romantic garden ideas with the Italian landscape. Because paths include steps, gravel and mild slopes, comfortable footwear is recommended. Allow at least an hour to wander, more if you plan to sit and sketch, read or take photos. As the gardens sometimes close for weddings or private events, checking the official website or contacting Villa Cimbrone in advance is essential, especially if you have limited time in Ravello.
