If your train is replaced by a bus in Italy, do not wait on the railway platform. Go toward the station exit and look for signs or announcements saying bus sostitutivo, servizio sostitutivo, or autoservizio sostitutivo. The normal boarding point is outside the station, often in the forecourt, but some stations use a nearby street, local bus stop, or coach terminal instead. For a replacement bus for an Italian train, the disruption notice for your specific train is more reliable than assuming every station uses the same stop.
Trenitalia’s current notices regularly specify the exact bus-stop address when it is not directly outside the station, and some even provide stop numbers, landmarks, or coordinates. For the basics of trains, tickets, reservations, and validation before something goes wrong, see our Italy by train guide.
Start by going outside, not to another platform
A substitute coach does not normally pull up beside the tracks. Once you have confirmed that your train has been cancelled and replaced by road transport, head toward the station’s street-level exit.
The phrase you most want to see is piazzale antistante la stazione. It means the open area or forecourt immediately in front of the railway station. Trenitalia uses this as the standard location for many substitute services, but official notices frequently list exceptions where a coach cannot safely reach the station entrance.

At a small station, this may be as simple as walking through the main doors and finding a coach waiting beside the car park. At a large station, there may be several exits and several bus areas. Do not follow a crowd simply because everyone appears equally worried. Check the destination first.
How to find the correct bus stop
- Confirm that a substitute service actually exists. A cancelled train does not automatically mean a coach has been provided. Look at the Trenitalia or other operator’s notice, the journey information in its app or website, station announcements, or information staff.
- Find the words “punto di fermata” or “fermata bus”. These identify the boarding location. For planned engineering works, the notice often gives a street address for every station where the normal forecourt is not used.
- Leave through the appropriate station exit. If no special instructions are given, start with the main exit toward the station forecourt. If the notice names a street, bus station, or opposite side of the railway, follow that instead.
- Match the direction, not just the fact that it is a railway coach. There may be buses running both ways along the closed section. Check the final destination and intermediate stops before loading your luggage.
- Ask the driver or railway staff if anything is unclear. A useful sentence is “È questo il bus sostitutivo per Firenze?”, meaning “Is this the substitute bus for Florence?” Replace Firenze with your destination.
Italian words that help you decode the stop description
- Bus sostitutivo / servizio sostitutivo: replacement bus or substitute service.
- Autoservizio sostitutivo: the more formal term often used in railway notices.
- Piazzale antistante la stazione: the forecourt directly in front of the station.
- Autostazione: bus or coach station.
- Fermata TPL: a local public transport stop. TPL means trasporto pubblico locale.
- Palina: the pole or sign marking a bus stop.
- Direzione: direction.
- Incrocio: intersection or junction.
- Altezza civico 10: approximately level with street number 10.
- Bivio FS: the road junction or turnoff for the railway station.
- Presso: at or near.
- Fronte: opposite or facing the stated landmark.
Why you should not memorize a bus stop at a major station
Replacement-coach locations can change according to the railway line, road closures, construction work, events, and the size of the vehicles being used. Even the same station can have a different boarding point during another disruption.
Current Trenitalia notices illustrate how specific these arrangements can become. Substitute services may use an ordinary station forecourt at most stops but a particular street, municipal bus stop, terminal, or intersection at the exceptions. Some temporary notices change a boarding point again because of local road restrictions.
That is especially important at stations such as Roma Termini, Napoli Centrale, Bologna Centrale, Milano Centrale, and other large hubs. “Outside the station” is not precise enough when the building stretches along several streets.
How to recognize the right coach
The vehicle may not look like a Trenitalia bus. Railway companies frequently contract ordinary coach operators to run the road section, so the company’s name painted on the side can be unfamiliar.
Look instead for a card, electronic display, or sign in the windscreen identifying the railway substitute service. Trenitalia’s regional accessibility and service plans specifically describe buses marked with “Servizio sostitutivo Trenitalia”.
Also check the destination. Planned services often have their own bus code, which may look nothing like the original train number. For example, official timetables can identify coaches with alphanumeric references such as PA166 or RM41H. The code is useful, but the destination and direction matter more.
Before putting a suitcase underneath the coach, ask whether the bus serves your stop. Some substitute services call at every affected station; others run directly between larger stations or omit stops that cannot be reached safely by road.
Do you use the same train ticket?
A railway-operated substitute coach is normally part of the disrupted rail journey rather than a separate public bus trip. Trenitalia’s current regional conditions allow passengers with the appropriate rail ticket to use regular substitute road services. These services are treated as second class.
Do not buy an ordinary city-bus ticket simply because the coach is departing from a municipal bus stop. A notice saying fermata TPL may only mean that the railway coach is using the physical stop normally used by local buses.
Paper regional tickets
If your paper regional ticket requires validation, validate it before starting the journey whenever you can. There is an unusually useful rule for remote substitute stops: Trenitalia’s current regional conditions state that when the departure point is not in front of the station and you cannot use the station validator, a ticket that requires validation can be validated by writing the date and departure time on it by hand in indelible ink.
Do not use this as a shortcut when the normal validation machine is available. It is a fallback for the situation described in the conditions.
Digital regional tickets
Trenitalia’s current Biglietto Digitale Regionale validates automatically at the scheduled departure time of the train selected on the ticket. You should have the validated ticket available on your device, together with identification when required.
Other operators, regional fare systems, and integrated tickets can work differently, so follow the instructions attached to your particular booking rather than applying Trenitalia’s regional rules to every railway company in Italy.
Luggage, bicycles, strollers, and animals
Normal suitcases can generally travel with you, and on a full-size coach the driver will usually direct larger bags to the luggage compartment. Keep passports, medication, money, electronics, and anything you may need during the journey with you rather than buried under the coach.
Bicycles are a different matter. Many current Trenitalia disruption notices explicitly state that ordinary bicycles and electric micromobility devices cannot travel on the substitute coaches. Some individual services allow a folding bicycle packed in a bag and placed in the luggage hold, so check the notice for your route rather than assuming your train’s bicycle facilities carry over to the road section.
Large animals can also be restricted on substitute vehicles, while assistance dogs are specifically permitted in current Trenitalia notices. If you are carrying a stroller, be ready to fold it and place it where the driver instructs, since the coach layout may be much tighter than a regional train.
If you need step-free or mobility assistance
Do not assume a railway replacement coach has the same accessibility as the train it replaces, particularly when a bus has been arranged at short notice. Trenitalia states that an unexpectedly substituted road service may not always provide the additional accessibility facilities that would have been available on the train.
If you have booked assistance, speak to railway staff or RFI assistance as soon as the cancellation is announced rather than independently heading toward the bus stop. In regional plans, accessible substitute vehicles or dedicated alternatives such as a suitable taxi or NCC vehicle may be arranged according to the passenger’s needs.
Allow for a slower journey and uncertain arrival time
A railway timetable works on tracks. A replacement coach works in Italian road traffic. Official notices routinely warn that bus times can vary according to traffic conditions.
If you have an onward train, do not treat the bus’s scheduled arrival as a guaranteed connection time. Keep watching the operator’s live information and, if the delay threatens a connection on the same journey, speak to staff before buying a new ticket unnecessarily.
If the disruption changes where or when you arrive and you need to rearrange the next part of your trip, you can organize the rest of your Italy route once you know the revised arrival point.
What to do if the bus is not where you expected
First, reread the exact stop description. The most common mistake is waiting in front of the station when the notice names a nearby bus terminal or street stop.
Then check these possibilities:
- The coach is using a different exit or the opposite side of the station.
- The boarding point has been temporarily moved because of roadworks or an event.
- The bus is delayed in traffic.
- You are waiting for the coach in the wrong direction.
- Your train was cancelled but no substitute coach was provided for that particular service.
- The coach serves a nearby station instead of your station because the road cannot accommodate it.
If the stop is still unclear, return to station staff or the ticket office if one is open. On Trenitalia services, the official Infomobilità notices are particularly useful because planned disruptions often list each exception to the normal station-forecourt rule.
If you miss the coach or the last connection
Do not immediately pay for a long taxi and assume the railway company will reimburse it. First tell railway staff what happened and ask how they are rerouting passengers. Keep your ticket, screenshots of the cancellation or delay, and any instructions you receive.
Passenger options depend on the operator, ticket, cause of the disruption, and the journey you purchased. Trenitalia states that during qualifying disruption passengers may, depending on the circumstances, be offered substitute transport, continuation on another suitable train, or another route.
If the problem has also caused you to miss another train, deal with that connection before simply purchasing the next expensive ticket. The rules can be very different when both trains form one transport contract compared with two unrelated bookings.
A final check before you leave the station building
- Confirm that the train is actually replaced by road transport, not merely cancelled.
- Write down or screenshot the exact punto di fermata.
- Check the bus departure time, which may differ from the original train time.
- Confirm the destination and direction.
- Check whether your intermediate station is served.
- Have your rail ticket ready and validate it if your ticket type requires it.
- Check restrictions before trying to travel with a bicycle, large animal, or unusual luggage.
- If you require accessibility assistance, contact staff before heading independently to the road stop.
The key distinction is simple: piazzale antistante la stazione means you can normally walk through the main doors and look immediately outside. Any street name, civic number, autostazione, fermata TPL, or palina in the notice means you have been given a more specific stop, and that instruction takes priority over the usual forecourt location.
