Do not assume you can drive to the door of a hotel in the Sassi. In many cases, the final approach is pedestrian, involves stone steps, or requires stopping at a specific road-accessible meeting point and carrying the bags from there. Staying at a Matera cave hotel with luggage works well when you arrange the last 200 metres before arrival, rather than discovering the problem with two suitcases at the top of a staircase.
If you are driving, ask the hotel for its exact approved arrival route before entering Matera. If you are arriving by train or bus, ask where a taxi or hotel transfer can actually drop you. Most importantly, ask whether porter service means someone will meet you at a road, at reception, or only help after you have already reached the property.
Why the hotel address is not enough in the Sassi
Matera’s historic cave districts are not laid out like a normal street grid. Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso descend into the ravine through a mixture of roads, narrow lanes, terraces and stairways. The roof of one building can effectively become the path above another. The regional tourism authority describes the Sassi as a network of lanes, alleys and stairways, which is charming until the suitcase wheels start objecting.
A hotel’s postal address therefore does not tell you whether a car can reach reception. Two properties a short distance apart on the map can have completely different arrival arrangements. One may have a road within a few metres of reception. Another may require several staircases. A scattered hotel, or albergo diffuso, may have reception in one building and your room farther away through the Sassi.
Before booking, ask the property these questions:
- What is the exact luggage drop-off point?
- How many steps are there between that point and reception?
- Are there more steps between reception and my room?
- Can staff meet us at the drop-off point?
- Is porterage included, available for a fee, or unavailable?
- If we arrive by car, which ZTL gate are we permitted to use?
- Will the hotel register our license plate, and when?
- Where should we park after unloading?
Ask for the answers in writing. A pin dropped into WhatsApp is considerably more useful here than “follow Google Maps to the hotel.”
Do not follow your sat-nav blindly into the Sassi
Matera has several ZTL, or Zona a Traffico Limitato, areas controlled by access rules and electronic gates called varchi. The important words on the signs are ZTL attiva, meaning the restriction is active, and eccetto autorizzati, meaning authorized vehicles are exempt.
The municipality’s current rules set the electronic gates for the Sassi at Via D’Addozio and Via Bruno Buozzi. Under the 2025 ordinance, the Sassi ZTL is active every day:
- 1 July to 15 September: 10:00 to 24:00.
- 16 September to 30 June: 10:00 to 20:30.
Those hours tell you when the general restriction operates. They do not mean that every lane becomes freely usable outside those hours. Individual streets, pedestrian areas, one-way restrictions and permanent access controls still apply. Check the Comune di Matera ZTL page shortly before your trip because temporary ordinances can alter access.
A hotel booking is not automatically permission to cross any ZTL gate
This is one of the easiest ways to collect an unwanted souvenir from Matera.
The municipality has a system allowing authorized accommodation businesses and garages to communicate guest vehicle registrations and regularize eligible ZTL transits. The municipal procedure states that an authorized business can enter vehicle and transit details into the system, with regularization required no later than the calendar day following the transit.
That still does not give you permission to choose your own gate or route. Properties in different parts of the historic centre can have different procedures. Some hotels instruct guests to use one particular entrance for luggage unloading and register the plate afterward. Other properties explicitly tell guests not to drive into the Sassi at all and instead use a garage, shuttle or pedestrian approach.
Follow the instructions from your own hotel, not instructions copied from another hotel’s website.
The safest arrival sequence if you have a rental car
- Contact the hotel before arrival day. Tell them you are driving and give the approximate arrival time.
- Ask for a specific navigation point. This may be a square, garage, street junction or ZTL gate rather than the hotel’s address.
- Ask explicitly whether your car may enter the restricted area. “Can we unload nearby?” is too vague.
- If access requires registration, send the complete license plate exactly as shown on the car. Rental-car plates are particularly easy to mistype when they are unfamiliar.
- Stop only where the hotel tells you to stop. Unloading permission does not necessarily include parking permission.
- Hand the luggage over or take it to reception. If a porter is meeting you, agree on a recognizable meeting point rather than “near the Sassi.”
- Move the car to the recommended parking area. Do not leave it inside the historic area unless your accommodation has specifically confirmed that your vehicle is permitted to remain there.
The Comune lists covered paid parking facilities around the centre including the Via Vena/Via Lucana area, Via Saragat and Piazza Cesare Firrao. Which is sensible depends on which side of the Sassi your accommodation occupies. A garage that looks close in a straight line may still leave you with a steep climb on foot.
Choose parking by the hotel entrance, not by the hotel name
The useful question is not “What is the closest parking to the Sassi?” The Sassi cover a substantial hillside.
For a Barisano property, the practical approach may be from the northern or central side of the historic centre. For an upper Caveoso property, approaching from the Via Lucana side may make more sense. Hotels deeper in the cave districts may recommend a garage with a shuttle rather than the geographically closest car park.
Ask the property to send:
- the parking name or street address;
- the correct vehicle entrance;
- the walking route from parking to reception;
- whether the route contains stairs;
- whether a shuttle or baggage pickup operates between the garage and hotel.

Porter service can mean three different things
Do not treat porter service, luggage assistance and shuttle service as interchangeable.
A true porter arrangement may involve staff meeting you at an accessible road and carrying the bags through the pedestrian lanes. Luggage assistance may mean staff help only from reception to your room. A garage shuttle may transport you to a road near the hotel but still leave a short walk or staircase at the end.
Some Sassi hotels advertise porterage on request. Others specifically state that they do not have a porter but will assist at check-in. That difference matters enormously with large suitcases, a stroller or reduced mobility.
Ask, “Will someone meet us at [drop-off point] and carry our suitcases all the way to the room?” That produces a much clearer answer than “Do you have luggage help?”
Arriving without a car
If you arrive at Matera Centrale or at a coach stop with substantial luggage, a taxi or pre-arranged transfer is usually more sensible than walking directly into the Sassi. The important detail is the destination you give the driver.
Do not simply say the hotel name and expect door-to-door delivery. Ask the hotel beforehand for the taxi drop-off point. Authorized taxis and NCC vehicles have different ZTL permissions from ordinary private cars, but even an authorized vehicle cannot drive up a staircase or through a pedestrian-only passage.
Your sequence should be:
- arrive in Matera;
- take the taxi or transfer to the hotel’s specified meeting point;
- call reception if staff are supposed to meet you;
- hand over the large bags before entering the stair network.
If Matera is one stop in a longer trip, keeping transfer notes, hotel arrival pins and luggage plans together in the Italy on Foot trip planner can save some frantic message-searching when you arrive.
Large suitcases are particularly awkward here
The problem is not simply distance. Stone paving can be uneven, stair treads vary, and a route that looks like a normal lane on a phone map can suddenly become a flight of steps.
A four-wheel spinner works wonderfully on an airport concourse and rather less impressively on ancient stone. If your hotel is deep in the Sassi, a smaller case or backpack is considerably easier to handle. For a longer Italian trip, consider leaving the biggest suitcase in secure storage elsewhere and taking a smaller overnight bag to Matera if your itinerary permits it.
Do not count only the steps from the street to reception. Ask about the room itself. Cave properties frequently occupy several levels, and rooms can be spread across adjoining historic structures rather than stacked neatly around an elevator.
Children, strollers and reduced mobility
A description such as “only five minutes from the centre” says almost nothing about accessibility in Matera. Five minutes may include steep stone steps.
For a stroller, ask whether there is a step-free route from the nearest vehicle point to the entrance. If there is not, a lightweight folding stroller is much easier to manage than a large travel system.
Travelers with limited mobility should ask the hotel for the exact number of unavoidable steps, the steepness of the final approach, elevator availability and whether the assigned room is on the same level as reception. Do this before choosing a non-refundable room.
Drivers using a disability parking permit should also contact the property and municipality before entering a restricted area. Matera’s ZTL office has a specific procedure for disability permits that are not already recorded in its authorization system.
Late arrivals need a different plan
Late arrival is where an otherwise easy check-in can unravel. During the summer period, the main Sassi gates remain active until midnight. During the rest of the year, the current restriction runs until 20:30. Your hotel reception may also close earlier than the ZTL does.
If you expect to arrive after normal reception hours, arrange all three parts in advance: vehicle or taxi route, luggage handoff, and room access.
For a rental car, do not decide at 22:30 to “try the road and see.” Park where instructed and use the hotel’s approved transfer method. For a train or coach arrival, pre-book a taxi or hotel transfer if reception has given you a specific last-mile meeting point.
If you accidentally approach an active ZTL gate
If you have not been specifically authorized, do not cross the camera line simply because the road ahead appears open. Stop safely before the restricted entrance, turn away where legally possible and call the hotel.
If you already crossed the gate by mistake, contact the accommodation immediately. If your stay and vehicle qualify under that property’s authorization, the hotel may need your registration details promptly. Do not assume that a later check-in automatically fixes an unauthorized transit, and do not make a second trip through the gate while trying to solve the first one.
Keep the hotel’s written arrival instructions and any message confirming that your plate will be registered. If you are unsure which gate you crossed, note the street name and approximate time while it is still fresh.
The one message to send your hotel before arrival
A day or two before reaching Matera, send the property your arrival time and transport method, then ask for the exact drop-off pin, parking instructions, ZTL procedure, number of unavoidable steps and whether someone will meet you for the bags.
Once those five details are clear, staying in the Sassi becomes much simpler. The inconvenience is concentrated in the final approach. Solve that before arrival, and the suitcase spends far less time bouncing down medieval steps.
