On a normal weekday, the FAL train is usually the best choice if you want to arrive closest to the Sassi: get off at Matera Centrale in Piazza della Visitazione, then walk toward Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Private coaches can be faster, but many use Via Don Luigi Sturzo, about a 25-minute walk from the historic centre. For Bari to Matera, the deciding detail is often the stop name on your ticket, not the headline journey time.
August 2026: check the FAL works before choosing the train
There is an important temporary complication in August 2026. Ferrovie Appulo Lucane has suspended rail service on the Bari Centrale to Grumo Appula section for infrastructure work, with replacement buses operating from Bari. Rail services farther along the route are running, but passengers starting in Bari should not assume that a search result labelled as a FAL journey will be an uninterrupted train ride.
For travel before the end of August, check the latest FAL service notice as well as the current FAL timetable. During the works, replacement buses from Bari Centrale use the FS Bus Terminal on Via Capruzzi, not the normal FAL railway platform.
Train or bus: the practical choice
- Choose the FAL train on a normal operating weekday if your priority is arriving near the historic centre. Matera Centrale is the most convenient rail stop for most Sassi accommodation.
- Choose a private coach if it gives you a substantially better departure time or faster journey. The quickest road services can take around an hour, compared with roughly 100 minutes for the normal FAL rail journey.
- Be careful on Sundays and public holidays. Matera’s official tourism information notes that FAL rail service does not operate on holidays and that bus services replace it. Check your actual date rather than applying a weekday timetable to Sunday.
- During railway works, compare the replacement bus with private coaches. Once the rail advantage disappears, departure point, arrival point and luggage arrangements matter more than the operator name.
Where the FAL train leaves from in Bari Centrale
The first trap is assuming that the train to Matera leaves from an ordinary Trenitalia platform. It does not. Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, usually abbreviated FAL, is a separate operator with its own part of the Bari Centrale complex.
If you arrive on a Trenitalia or Italo train, follow signs toward Piazza Aldo Moro and leave the main station on that side. Once you reach the square, turn left for the FAL station. Do not simply stand under the Trenitalia departure board looking for Matera.
Allow at least 20 minutes between a long-distance arrival and a FAL departure if the tickets are separate. Thirty minutes is more comfortable with suitcases or on a first visit. The stations are close, but finding the correct operator, buying a ticket and reaching the right platform all take time.
This is one of the Italian rail cases where the operator matters as much as the station name. The broader Italy by train guide for 2026 explains why local railways do not always follow the same ticket rules as Trenitalia.
Where the train arrives in Matera
The stop most visitors want is Matera Centrale, sometimes shortened to Matera C.le on timetables. The station is in Piazza della Visitazione.
From here, walk toward Piazza Vittorio Veneto using Via Don Minzoni or Via Roma. The edge of the Sassi is only a short walk away. Allow roughly 5 to 10 minutes to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with a little longer if you have bags.
The line continues through several Matera stops, so do not assume anything containing the word Matera is equally convenient:
- Matera Villa Longo, sometimes shown as Matera V.L., is north of the centre and can be useful for accommodation around Via Nazionale.
- Matera Centrale is the usual choice for Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the Sasso Barisano and most central hotels.
- Matera Sud is farther south. Stay on to this stop only if your accommodation or onward connection makes it useful.
If your hotel is deep inside the Sassi, arriving at Matera Centrale does not mean you have a flat walk to the door. Cobbles, slopes and staircases begin once you enter the old quarters. With a large suitcase, ask your accommodation which road-accessible meeting point they recommend rather than following a map directly to a cave-hotel address.
FAL tickets, price and validation
The 2026 FAL fare table puts the standard 70 km rail fare at €6.20 one way. Check the live fare before travelling because regional tariffs can change.
Tickets can be bought through FAL’s online system or app and at available station machines and sales points. Do not assume a Trenitalia ticket covers this railway simply because both journeys use the name Bari Centrale.
FAL’s published ticket rules distinguish between electronic and paper tickets. Online tickets are not manually stamped, while paper railway tickets issued at stations must be validated before boarding. The Italian word to look for is convalida or obliterazione. If you have a paper ticket, deal with this before you get on rather than waiting for an inspector to explain it.
Where private buses leave from in Bari
Many long-distance coaches use the FS Park Bus Terminal on Via Capruzzi, on the opposite side of the main railway station from Piazza Aldo Moro. You can reach the Via Capruzzi side through the station underpass.
This is not universal. Coach companies may sell departures from several Bari stops, and even one operator can use different stops for different services. For example, Itabus lists FS Park on Via Capruzzi as well as several other Bari addresses. FlixBus also warns that some lines use Piazza Aldo Moro rather than FS Park.
The rule is simple: use the address printed on your individual ticket. Do not search for a company logo near Bari Centrale and assume every bus belonging to that company leaves from the same pavement.
Where the main private coaches arrive in Matera
This is the biggest difference from the train. FlixBus, Itabus and Miccolis list their main Matera long-distance coach stop around Via Don Luigi Sturzo, near Chiesa di San Paolo. Miccolis lists its stop at Via Don Luigi Sturzo 9.
Via Don Luigi Sturzo is not Matera Centrale station and is not at the entrance to the Sassi. It is roughly 2.2 km on foot from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, or about 25 minutes without heavy luggage.
That is perfectly manageable with a backpack. It becomes considerably less attractive with two rolling suitcases, a stroller or accommodation reached by additional Sassi staircases. In those cases, arrange a taxi or ask your hotel for its recommended arrival point.
FAL replacement buses are different from private coaches
A bus shown by FAL is not necessarily going to the same Matera stop as FlixBus, Itabus or Miccolis. This distinction matters during engineering works and on services replacing trains.
FAL replacement buses can serve Matera Villa Longo, Matera Centrale and Matera Sud. The road stop corresponding to Matera Centrale may be on Via Aldo Moro rather than directly at the underground railway platform.
If the driver or display lists several Matera stops, ask for “Matera Centrale” if you are heading for the historic centre. There is no prize for staying aboard until the terminus at Matera Sud just because it is the final stop.
On the Bari side, replacement buses can also use a different boarding location from the normal FAL train. During the current 2026 works, that means the FS Bus Terminal on Via Capruzzi. Look for the words bus sostitutivo or servizio sostitutivo, meaning replacement bus service.
Which is better with luggage?
Private long-distance coaches are often the simpler physical setup for a large rolling suitcase because luggage goes into the hold. Allowances vary by company, so check the booking rather than assuming every operator includes the same number or weight of bags.
FAL’s published rules provide free carriage for one bag or object up to 20 kg and within 70 x 50 x 30 cm. Larger or additional items may require an additional ticket, so anyone travelling with unusually large luggage should confirm the current rule with FAL.
For the final kilometre, however, the train wins. Matera Centrale puts you much closer to the walking entrance to the old town than the Via Don Luigi Sturzo coach stop. A slightly slower ride can therefore produce an easier door-to-door journey.
Sunday, holiday and late-arrival strategy
On timetables, feriale generally means an ordinary working day, normally Monday through Saturday excluding public holidays. festivo refers to Sundays and public holidays. Those labels matter on this route because the FAL rail pattern changes.
Do not build a Sunday transfer by finding a convenient Tuesday train and assuming it runs every day. Check the exact date on FAL and then compare it with private coaches.
The same caution applies to late arrivals in Bari. Services thin out in the evening, and the last useful departure may leave much earlier than visitors expect. If a delayed flight or long-distance train could leave you stranded, identify the final two workable departures before the travel day.
If this transfer sits between several cities, hotel check-ins and fixed reservations, you can build your Italy itinerary around the actual transfer rather than treating the journey as a generic 60 or 90-minute gap.
If you are starting at Bari Airport
Do not automatically travel into Bari Centrale just to turn around and head southeast again. Direct airport coaches and shuttle services operate between Bari Airport and Matera, with operators and stops varying by timetable.
Check the airport option first on the official Matera tourism transport page. Depending on the service, the Matera arrival may be Via Don Luigi Sturzo or a more central stop around Via Aldo Moro, so inspect that detail before choosing purely by departure time.
Common mistakes and how to recover
- You are standing at a Trenitalia platform with no Matera train showing. Go to the FAL part of Bari Centrale. It is a separate railway.
- Your FAL journey has suddenly become a bus. Check for a service interruption and find the stated replacement-bus terminal. During the current works in Bari, use the FS Bus Terminal on Via Capruzzi.
- You booked a private coach and walked to the FAL station. Read the street address on the ticket. FS Park, another Via Capruzzi stop and Piazza Aldo Moro are not interchangeable.
- You expected the coach to drop you beside the Sassi. If your ticket says Via Don Luigi Sturzo, use a taxi with heavy luggage or allow about 25 minutes to walk to Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
- You stayed on the FAL service past Matera Centrale. Get off at the next Matera stop and check the next local connection or take a taxi back. Do not continue farther simply because the train has not reached its terminus.
- You missed your connection in Bari. Search both FAL and the private coach operators. The next workable departure may use a completely different Bari boarding point and a different Matera arrival stop.
- You have an unvalidated paper FAL ticket. Validate it before boarding. Electronic FAL tickets follow different rules, so keep the QR code and identification available for inspection.
