Matera Centrale Station: Why the Railway Is Different From Trenitalia

Matera has a city-centre railway stop, but it is not part of the Trenitalia network. The Matera Centrale station is operated by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, usually shortened to FAL, on a separate regional railway linking Matera with Altamura and Bari. FAL has its own tickets, timetables and service notices. If Trenitalia shows a journey to “Matera,” check the details carefully because the final leg may be a bus rather than a train arriving here.

Why “Centrale” Does Not Mean Trenitalia

In most large Italian cities, a station called Centrale immediately suggests Trenitalia, Italo and the national RFI rail network. Matera is the exception that catches travelers out.

The railway through central Matera belongs to Ferrovie Appulo Lucane. It is a separate regional system using narrow-gauge infrastructure rather than the standard-gauge national network. The tracks therefore do not function as an extension of Trenitalia’s mainline railway.

This distinction matters more than the engineering might suggest. A Trenitalia ticket from Rome, Florence or Milan does not automatically become a FAL ticket when you reach Bari. Likewise, a FAL ticket from Bari to Matera is not a Trenitalia regional ticket simply because both journeys may begin around Bari Centrale.

On FAL timetables you may see the central stop abbreviated as Matera C.le. Other Matera stops on the same local line include Matera Villa Longo, Matera Serra Rifusa and Matera Sud. For most visitors staying around the historic centre or Sassi, the central stop is normally the useful one.

What the Station Is Actually Like

The FAL stop is in Piazza della Visitazione beside Via Aldo Moro, immediately outside Matera’s historic core. The modern station structure is easy to recognize by its large roof and open rectangular void bringing daylight down to the railway level.

The trains run below street level. From the station building you descend to the underground boarding area rather than walking onto a large open-air collection of platforms. FAL’s accessibility plan lists an independently usable lift here, and the station redevelopment also provided a ticket office, waiting area and passenger facilities.

Do not expect a sprawling mainline terminus with electronic boards full of Frecciarossa departures. This is a compact local railway station, which is another reason travelers sometimes wonder if they have arrived at the right place.

Walking from the station to the Sassi

Once outside, the historic centre is close. The useful pedestrian route runs from the station area toward Via Don Minzoni, then Via Ascanio Persio and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The square is roughly a 5 to 10 minute walk for most travelers and is one of the easiest gateways into the Sassi.

The important luggage warning comes after that. Reaching Piazza Vittorio Veneto is straightforward; reaching a cave hotel deep inside Sasso Barisano or Sasso Caveoso can involve steep lanes, stone paving and stairs. A hotel that looks “close to the station” on a map may still have an awkward final approach with a large suitcase.

FAL, Trenitalia and FrecciaLink Are Three Different Things to Check

A useful rule is to look at the operator, not just the destination name.

  • FAL: use this for the local railway between Matera, Altamura and the Bari direction, plus FAL replacement buses and other FAL bus services.
  • Trenitalia: use this for Italy’s national rail network, including journeys to Bari and stations on the national railway elsewhere in Basilicata.
  • FrecciaLink: some Trenitalia itineraries continue to Matera by dedicated connecting bus. That is not the FAL train.

Trenitalia’s official FrecciaLink information for Matera currently lists its Matera stop on Viale Nazioni Unite, near number 5. That is a street-level coach stop, not the underground FAL boarding area on Via Aldo Moro.

This is one of the easiest ways to miss a connection. Seeing “Matera” on a ticket does not tell you where to stand. Read the final segment and look for the operator, mode of transport and street address.

The Bari Connection Is Especially Confusing in 2026

Normally, travelers think of the Bari to Matera journey as the FAL railway. In 2026, major infrastructure works make the situation less tidy.

As of August 2026, FAL’s timetable in force from 22 June states that the railway between Bari Centrale and Gravina is interrupted until further notice, with replacement buses operating over the affected section. The Matera branch can still involve FAL trains from the Altamura side, so a journey shown as Bari to Matera may include both a bus and a train rather than one train from beginning to end.

Some services can also be operated by bus for a longer part of the journey. Before traveling, check FAL’s current timetables and fares page rather than relying on an older blog post, saved screenshot or last year’s directions.

If your Bari departure says “Terminal BUS FS via Capruzzi”

Go to Via Capruzzi. Do not wait on a railway platform simply because your booking started as a rail search.

Bari Centrale has exits on different sides of the station. Via Capruzzi is on the southern side of the main FS complex. If you arrive on a Trenitalia train, follow station signs toward Via Capruzzi and allow time to walk through the station before the FAL replacement bus departure.

On Italian notices, useful words include:

  • bus sostitutivo: replacement bus
  • treno soppresso: cancelled train
  • partenza: departure
  • arrivo: arrival
  • feriale: ordinary working-day service, normally excluding Sundays and public holidays
  • festivo: Sunday or public-holiday service
  • fino a nuova comunicazione: until further notice

For a wider trip through Bari, Monopoli, Lecce and the rest of the region, the Italy on Foot Puglia planning guide explains where the national rail network works well and where local operators need more attention.

Sundays and Public Holidays Work Differently

FAL’s current service rules state that rail service is suspended on Sundays and public holidays and replaced by bus services. This is not the same thing as saying there is no public transport at all. It means you must look at the bus timetable rather than assuming the weekday train schedule still applies.

This detail is particularly important for a Sunday flight into Bari followed by a transfer to Matera. A route that appears simple when researched on a Wednesday may work differently on the actual travel date.

If Matera forms part of a longer multi-city journey, it helps to organize the rest of your Italy route around the operators and transfer points rather than treating every rail-looking connection as a Trenitalia journey.

Buying and Using a FAL Ticket

FAL sells tickets through station ticket offices, authorized sales points, its website and app. In 2026 the operator also introduced FAL Tap & Go, and the central Matera stop is included among the locations where it is available.

For a train journey using Tap & Go, tap your contactless bank card or NFC-enabled phone when entering and tap the same payment method again when leaving. FAL warns that forgetting the tap out can result in the maximum applicable fare being charged. One payment card is used for one passenger, so a couple cannot simply tap the same card twice for two people.

If using a traditional ticket, do not assume that owning the ticket is always enough. FAL states that passengers with an invalid or unvalidated ticket can be penalized unless the failure to validate was caused by a problem attributable to the operator. Check the ticket instructions and use the validator or access gate provided.

Train tickets and bus tickets are not normally interchangeable

FAL distinguishes between railway tickets, bus tickets and integrated train-plus-bus products. Use the ticket that matches the service shown for your journey.

There is an important exception during railway suspensions. FAL’s rules allow railway tickets to be used on the replacement bus when the rail service is suspended, including the normal Sunday and holiday substitution. If a disruption changes your journey from train to bus, check the current FAL notice rather than immediately buying a second ticket.

Traveling With Luggage

FAL’s 2025/2026 passenger charter allows each traveler to carry one piece of luggage free of charge up to 20 kg and 70 × 50 × 30 cm. Baggage above the free allowance is subject to an additional single-journey ticket under the operator’s rules.

There is no checked-luggage process like an airport. You remain responsible for your bags during the journey.

The bigger practical issue in 2026 is the possibility of a train-to-bus transfer. If your itinerary changes vehicles at Altamura or uses a replacement coach, avoid scheduling an extremely tight onward commitment in Matera. Getting off a train, finding the bus boarding point and moving a large suitcase takes longer than stepping across a normal railway platform.

Reduced Mobility, Strollers and Heavy Bags

The central FAL facility has a lift connecting the station levels, making it substantially easier than attempting stairs with a wheelchair, stroller or heavy case. FAL asks passengers who need organized assistance to contact the company at least 24 hours before travel; current details are published on its quality and services page.

Station accessibility does not mean every destination in the Sassi is step-free. Matera’s modern centre and the ancient districts have very different terrain. Travelers with limited mobility should ask their accommodation for the nearest accessible vehicle point and the exact walking route before arrival.

What to Do If You End Up at the Wrong Place

You are in Bari and cannot find a FAL train

Read the current journey again. If it specifies BUS FS via Capruzzi, you need the replacement-bus terminal outside the mainline station, not a FAL railway platform.

You have a Trenitalia ticket that says Matera

Open the itinerary and inspect the final segment. If it says FrecciaLink, follow the coach details and use Trenitalia’s specified Matera stop on Viale Nazioni Unite. Do not automatically head underground to the FAL platform.

You expected a Sunday train

Check FAL’s holiday bus timetable. The regular railway is suspended on Sundays and public holidays, with road services replacing it.

You arrive by FAL replacement bus in Matera

Current Bari-direction FAL replacement services use the Via Aldo Moro stop beside the central railway entrance. Once off the bus, orient yourself toward Piazza della Visitazione and then walk toward Via Don Minzoni and Piazza Vittorio Veneto for the historic centre.

The Simple Rule That Prevents Most Mistakes

Before any journey involving Matera, check three things on the ticket: operator, vehicle and exact stop. “FAL train to Matera C.le,” “FAL replacement bus to Via Aldo Moro” and “Trenitalia FrecciaLink to Viale Nazioni Unite” can all be legitimate ways of reaching central Matera, but they are not the same service and do not necessarily use the same boarding point.

Once that distinction is clear, the railway becomes much less mysterious. Matera does have a central train stop. It simply belongs to a different railway system from the Trenitalia network most visitors use elsewhere in Italy.
