Finding an Italian induction hob locked just as you are trying to boil water usually does not mean the appliance is broken. Most touch-control cooktops have a child-safety or control lock, shown by a padlock, key, or sometimes the letter L. Start by drying the control panel, switch the hob on if necessary, then press and hold the lock or key symbol for about three to five seconds. If that does not work, stop experimenting with button combinations and identify the brand and model.

The important detail is that there is no single Italian unlock sequence. Bosch, Electrolux, AEG, Smeg and other manufacturers use similar-looking controls, but the exact order can vary even between models from the same brand.
Try this first
- Remove everything from the control area. Move pans, utensils, towels and packaging away from the touch buttons.
- Wipe the glass completely dry. Water or grease across several sensors can make a touch panel beep, flash or ignore commands.
- Look for the main power symbol. It is normally the familiar circle with a short vertical line at the top.
- Look for a padlock, key or child-safety symbol. It may be printed faintly on the glass rather than illuminated.
- Press and hold that symbol. Three to five seconds is common. Do not repeatedly jab it. Keep one dry fingertip steadily on the sensor.
- Wait for a beep or for the lock indicator to disappear. Then select a cooking zone and set a power level.
If the hob immediately locks again after you switch it off and back on, an automatic child lock may have been enabled. That is a setting rather than a fault.
What the symbols usually mean
Padlock or key
This is the strongest indication that the control panel is intentionally locked. In Italian manuals the feature may be called blocco, blocco comandi, sicurezza bambini or dispositivo di sicurezza per bambini.
Do not confuse the lock with the power button. On a black glass hob the markings can be surprisingly difficult to see until light hits them from the side, so use your phone flashlight if necessary.
The letter L
On some Electrolux and AEG cooktops, L indicates that the child-safety lock is active. Both manufacturers warn that the exact unlocking procedure can vary by model, so the model manual is the authority if the usual long press does not work.
H or h
An H or h normally refers to residual heat, not a locked appliance. The glass may still be hot even though the cooking zone has been switched off. Do not try to clear the letter by pressing random controls or touching the cooking area.
How common brands behave
Bosch
Many Bosch induction models use a key or child-lock symbol. Bosch’s instructions for common models specify holding the lock control for roughly four seconds to activate or deactivate the child lock. The hob may need to be switched off before the permanent child-safety function can be changed.
Bosch also notes that a wet control panel or an object lying across the sensors can cause flashing indicators. If the buttons seem completely uncooperative, cleaning and drying the control strip is worth doing before anything more drastic.
You can check the manufacturer’s current guidance on the Bosch Italy child-safety page.
Electrolux and AEG
These brands distinguish between a temporary control lock used while cooking and a child lock that can remain active after the appliance is switched off. On many models you turn the hob on and then hold the relevant lock sensor for up to about four seconds until its indicator disappears.
If you see L, Electrolux identifies it as a child-safety indication on applicable models. Because button layouts differ, use the appliance’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming that a sequence found for another Electrolux or AEG hob will work on yours. Electrolux provides an official explanation of the lock and child-lock functions.
Smeg
Many Smeg induction cooktops sold in Italy include a blocco comandi or child-safety feature. The existence of the feature is consistent across numerous models, but the button sequence is not safe to generalize. Find the model number and use the matching Smeg manual if a long press on the obvious lock control does not release it.
The lock may only be a cleaning lock
Some cooktops have a second type of lock designed to stop the controls changing while the glass is being wiped. Bosch calls this type of feature cleaning or wipe protection on certain models. It can release automatically after a short period rather than requiring the same procedure as the child lock.
If the hob was working and suddenly stopped responding immediately after someone wiped it, give the panel a moment, dry it thoroughly and watch the display. Repeatedly pressing every sensor can make the situation more confusing rather than less.
It unlocks, but the pan still does not heat
This is the point at which many guests assume the unlocking attempt failed. Induction cooktops will only heat suitable cookware, so a responsive display does not guarantee that the saucepan you picked from the cupboard will work.
Try this sequence:
- Place the pan squarely in the center of one cooking zone.
- Select that zone.
- Choose a power setting such as 5 or 6.
- Wait a few seconds for the hob to detect the pan.
If the control flashes or refuses to maintain the selected power, try another saucepan supplied in the apartment. Induction-compatible cookware needs a magnetic base. A simple test is to place a refrigerator magnet against the bottom of the pan. If it sticks firmly, the cookware is normally suitable. Bosch explains the same compatibility principle in its induction cookware guidance.
How to find the model number in a rental apartment
Do not pull an installed hob out of the worktop. The identification plate is often underneath it and inaccessible to a guest.
Instead, first check the obvious places:
- the apartment information folder or appliance manuals;
- a kitchen drawer containing instruction booklets;
- a QR code or model label visible along an accessible edge;
- the host’s digital house manual;
- a photograph sent to the host showing the entire control panel.
A clear photo is often faster than trying to describe the buttons. Include the logo and every illuminated symbol. The host may recognize the appliance immediately or have the manual from previous guests’ questions.
If you are coordinating several apartment, train and arrival details at once, you can also organize the rest of your Italy trip while keeping accommodation instructions and transport plans together.

If nothing lights up at all
A completely dark hob is a different problem from a locked control panel. Check that other kitchen appliances and lights have power. If the apartment has an accessible, clearly labelled wall switch specifically for the cooktop, confirm that it is on.
Do not start opening electrical panels, removing covers or resetting unidentified breakers in somebody else’s apartment. Italian homes may have several circuits, and switching the wrong one can shut down a refrigerator, boiler, alarm or other equipment.
If other appliances work but the hob remains completely dead, contact the host and describe it as il piano cottura non si accende, meaning “the cooktop does not switch on.” A photograph of the dark control panel and brand name will make troubleshooting easier.
If the apartment power has tripped
A cooktop that goes dark while several high-power appliances are running may be dealing with a power-supply issue rather than a lock. Turn off obvious heavy loads such as the hob, oven, kettle or hair dryer before doing anything else.
If the host has provided specific instructions for resetting the apartment’s electrical supply, follow those instructions. Otherwise contact them. Do not assume every switch in a quadro elettrico, the electrical panel, can safely be toggled without knowing what it controls.
Useful Italian words when asking the host
- Piano cottura: cooktop or hob
- Piano a induzione: induction cooktop
- Lucchetto: padlock
- Chiave: key
- Blocco comandi: control lock
- Sicurezza bambini: child safety or child lock
- Sbloccare: to unlock
- Non si accende: it does not switch on
- Non scalda: it does not heat
- Manuale di istruzioni: instruction manual
A useful message is: Il piano a induzione mostra il lucchetto e non riesco a sbloccarlo. Qual è il modello o la procedura corretta? That tells the host: “The induction hob shows the padlock and I can’t unlock it. What is the model or the correct procedure?”
What not to do
- Do not hold several random touch controls simultaneously unless the manual tells you to.
- Do not pour water over the panel or operate it with wet fingers.
- Do not pry up an installed hob to look for its identification plate.
- Do not repeatedly reset the apartment’s electricity to defeat a persistent error code.
- Do not assume every flashing symbol means “locked.” Photograph the actual display before contacting the host.
If the lock symbol disappears but an error code remains, treat that as a separate appliance fault. Switch the hob off normally, note the exact letters and numbers, and send them to the host. For a rental guest, that is usually far more useful than trying increasingly inventive combinations of plus, minus, timer and power buttons.
