Base is the flexible Trenitalia fare: you can change it repeatedly before departure and, with tighter restrictions, once within an hour after the booked train leaves. Economy allows one change before departure, limited to the date or time, and you pay the difference to the Base fare available for the new train. Super Economy cannot be changed at all. That is the essential rule for changing an Italian high-speed train ticket bought under these three fare types.

One distinction matters immediately: Base, Economy and Super Economy are Trenitalia fare names. They apply to Frecciarossa and other Trenitalia national services. They are not universal Italian rail rules, and they should not be applied to an Italo ticket, which has its own fare products and conditions. Trenitalia’s current national transport conditions were updated on 6 August 2026.

The three fares at a glance
| Fare | Before departure | After departure | Voluntary refund |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Changes allowed repeatedly | One change, up to 1 hour after departure | Usually yes before departure, with a 20% deduction |
| Economy | One date/time change, paying any difference to the available Base fare | No change | No, unless tiRimborso was added when buying |
| Super Economy | No booking or ticket change | No change | No, unless tiRimborso was added when buying |
The key trap is Economy. It is not simply a cheaper Base ticket with one free switch. When you use its permitted change, the new price is compared with the Base fare available at the time of the change, not with another discounted Economy fare.
First, know the difference between a booking change and a ticket change
Trenitalia uses two similar-looking terms that mean different things.
A cambio prenotazione, or booking change, changes the departure date or time while keeping the same route and the same category of train or service. A cambio biglietto, or ticket change, can cover broader changes such as the route, origin or destination, class or service level, number of travelers or fare, provided the conditions of your ticket allow them.
Do not be surprised if a simple time change is processed through a button labelled Change Ticket. Trenitalia specifically tells Economy passengers to use the ticket-change function for their permitted date or time modification.
Base: the fare to buy when plans may move
A Trenitalia Base ticket gives you the widest freedom of these three fares. Before the scheduled departure, you can change the booking or the ticket an unlimited number of times. After departure, one further change is permitted, but only until one hour after the original train’s scheduled departure.
Changing only the time or date
For Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca, Trenitalia compares the change with the Base price available for the new train. If the applicable Base fare is higher than what you originally paid, you must pay the difference. If it is lower in a straightforward booking change, Trenitalia does not refund the difference.
This is why moving a Base ticket from a quiet Tuesday morning train to a heavily booked Friday evening departure can still cost money. “Flexible” means the ticket permits the change. It does not mean every alternative train costs exactly the same.
Changing the route, class or other ticket details
Base also permits a broader ticket change. That can include the origin or destination, itinerary, train category, service level, class and certain passenger details. If the replacement costs more, you pay the difference. If it costs less and you make the change before the original departure, Trenitalia can refund the difference subject to the applicable deduction. After departure, no refund of a lower difference is available.
If you miss a train with a Base ticket
This is where Base is particularly useful. You have up to one hour after the booked departure to make the permitted one-time post-departure change. Do not assume you can handle that normally through the app once the train has left.
After departure, a booking change must be requested at the departure station shown on the ticket, using the ticket office, a self-service machine or an available Customer Service/Frecciadesk point. A broader ticket change after departure can be requested only at the ticket office in that departure station.
If your train is about to leave and you already know you will miss it, make the change before the scheduled departure if you possibly can. The online and app options are much easier before that deadline.
Can you simply board the next Frecciarossa with Base?
Base has a limited recovery rule, but changing the reservation first is cleaner. For the same route, Trenitalia currently permits access to another train of the same category from one hour before until one hour after the booked departure, with a €10 penalty per passenger. Using another category or changing class within that window can also require the fare difference plus the €10 penalty. Outside the permitted window, you can be treated as traveling without a valid ticket.
That rule is a fallback, not a reason to walk onto whichever red train happens to be at the platform.
Economy: one escape hatch, but you convert to Base
Economy is less flexible than its name sometimes suggests. You get one change before the booked departure, and that change is limited to the departure date or time while keeping the same train category or type of service. You cannot use the original Economy conditions to switch directly to a completely different route.
The important pricing rule is that you pay the difference between what you paid and the Base fare available for the replacement journey. Trenitalia does not simply search for another Economy seat at the same discounted price.
After the change is completed, the replacement ticket is subject to Base conditions. That makes the first Economy change potentially expensive, but the resulting ticket is more flexible if your plans move again.
An example of how Economy pricing works
Suppose you bought a discounted morning train for €35. You later decide to leave that evening. If the Base fare available on the evening departure is €67, the relevant comparison is €35 versus €67. You would pay the difference shown during the change process. The fact that you can see a different promotional fare for new customers does not mean Trenitalia will use that promotion for your Economy change.
This makes Economy a good middle choice when the route is settled but the timing might move once. For a broader look at which trains and fare styles suit different journeys, see our Italy by train beginner’s guide for 2026.
If you miss an Economy train
The permitted change ends at departure. Economy does not give you the Base ticket’s one-hour rescue window, and Trenitalia does not allow you to board another train using the unchanged Economy ticket. If you do, the ticket can be treated as invalid for that train.
If you know you are running late, change it on your phone before the printed departure time. Five minutes spent hoping the train will still be on the platform can cost more than five minutes spent changing the reservation.
Super Economy: the train and time are effectively locked
Super Economy has the simplest rule: booking changes and ticket changes are not permitted. You cannot move the ticket to a later Frecciarossa by paying the fare difference, and you cannot use it on another departure because you arrived late.
If your schedule is firm, that restriction may be a perfectly reasonable trade for the lower price. If your departure depends on an incoming flight, cruise arrival, uncertain meeting time or a chain of separately booked connections, the saving deserves a second look.
When putting several rail days together, it can help to organize the rest of your Italy trip first and identify which departures are genuinely fixed before choosing the cheapest fare for every leg.
tiRimborso helps with refunds, not changes
Trenitalia now offers an optional tiRimborso add-on for both Economy and Super Economy. It must be selected when you buy the ticket. It does not turn a Super Economy fare into a changeable ticket.
At the time of writing, the add-on costs €1 for Economy and €3 for Super Economy. It allows an eligible refund request up to midnight on the second day before departure, with a 10% deduction from the ticket price. For these fares, the refundable amount is credited back using the original payment method.
So if you have Super Economy plus tiRimborso and your plans change early enough, the practical sequence is refund the old ticket, then buy a new ticket. There is still no direct Super Economy change.
A name change is not the same as changing the journey
Another easy source of confusion is the passenger name. Under the current Base, Economy and Super Economy rules, a permitted cambio nominativo is a separate operation from moving the train.
For these three fares, Trenitalia currently allows the passenger name to be changed free of charge an unlimited number of times from ticket issue until the booked train departs. Name changes are no longer permitted after departure.
That means “Super Economy cannot be changed” does not mean a correctable passenger name is necessarily frozen. The journey itself is locked, but the nominative change has its own rule.
How to change a Trenitalia ticket online
For a ticket that qualifies, the most useful starting point is Trenitalia’s Manage your ticket page or the corresponding function in the Trenitalia app.
- Retrieve the booking using your email and PNR/ticket code, or your PNR and CP code.
- If you bought without registering, use the purchase-recovery details supplied after payment.
- Open the journey and choose the available booking or ticket-change function.
- Select the replacement departure.
- Check the new train number, date, departure time, service level and any price difference before confirming.
- After payment or confirmation, use the updated ticket details and seat assignment, not an old PDF or screenshot saved before the change.
Trenitalia’s online management form supports retrieval with email plus PNR/ticket code, PNR plus CP, or the recovery information supplied for qualifying purchases made without registration.
If the website or app will not offer the change
First check the fare printed on the ticket. A missing change button is perfectly normal for Super Economy and for an Economy ticket whose permitted change window has passed.
If the fare should allow the change, the sales channel matters. Before departure, Trenitalia permits ticket changes at its ticket offices; tickets issued by a travel agency can be handled through the issuing agency; and qualifying ticketless purchases made through Trenitalia’s website, app or call center can use the operator’s online or app change function. Self-service machines can handle booking changes in permitted cases, but Trenitalia’s current conditions state that a full cambio biglietto cannot be performed through a self-service machine.
If departure is close, do not spend twenty minutes repeatedly refreshing a reseller’s app. Go to a staffed Trenitalia ticket office with the PNR and identification, or contact the seller that actually issued the ticket if its sales channel controls the modification.
Do normal fare restrictions still apply when Trenitalia causes the problem?
The rules above concern changes made for your own travel needs. A cancellation, major delay or disrupted connection attributable to the railway can create separate rights to assistance, rerouting or reimbursement under Trenitalia’s transport conditions. In that situation, do not automatically buy a replacement at full price just because your original fare says Super Economy. Check the service notice and speak to railway staff first.
A delayed incoming flight, a late taxi or spending too long over lunch is different. Those are not railway-caused disruptions, so the fare you bought becomes crucial. For a trip with an uncertain arrival time, paying more for Base can be much cheaper than discovering at the station that your discounted ticket cannot follow you onto the next train.
