The Bologna Centrale to bus station walk is short: the official bus station puts the distance at about 300 metres. From the railway station, aim for the main Piazza Medaglie d’Oro exit, cross Viale Pietramellara using the pedestrian crossing, then keep left toward Piazza XX Settembre. The Autostazione is at Piazza XX Settembre 6, near Porta Galliera and the beginning of Via Indipendenza. With a suitcase, allow roughly 5 to 10 minutes once you are outside the railway station.
The main trap is not the distance. It is leaving Bologna Centrale on the wrong side, especially after arriving on an underground high-speed train.
The walking route step by step
- From your train, follow signs for โUscitaโ and โPiazza Medaglie d’Oroโ. Piazza Medaglie d’Oro is the city-facing side of Bologna Centrale and the simplest starting point for this transfer.
- Do not follow Via de’ Carracci or Kiss&Ride. Those signs take you toward the north side of the railway complex. They are useful for pickups and some station access, but not for the shortest walk to the coach station.
- Leave through the main station building onto Piazza Medaglie d’Oro. If you want to check your bearings before stepping outside, the official Bologna Centrale website identifies Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro as one of the station’s principal ground-floor areas.
- Cross Viale Pietramellara at the marked pedestrian crossing. Once across, keep left toward Piazza XX Settembre rather than continuing straight down Via Indipendenza toward the historic centre.
- Look for the Autostazione building. Its official address is Piazza XX Settembre 6. The words Autostazione or Stazione Autolinee are the useful signs to recognise.
- Inside, check โPartenzeโ for your coach. Match the destination, operator, departure time and capolinea, meaning the numbered departure stand or terminus. Do not assume the first coach displaying your destination is yours.
If your train arrives on the underground high-speed platforms
Bologna Centrale feels much larger when you arrive on the underground AV platforms than it does on a map. High-speed services can arrive on tracks 16 to 19 below the historic station, so the 300-metre outdoor walk is only the final part of your transfer.
Follow signs upward for Piazza Medaglie d’Oro. If signs offer a choice between Piazza Medaglie d’Oro and Via de’ Carracci/Kiss&Ride, take Piazza Medaglie d’Oro. Lifts are useful with large cases, but waiting for one can add time when several trains arrive together.
For planning purposes, allow around 15 to 20 minutes from an underground high-speed platform to the Autostazione if you have luggage. That is a buffer rather than a timetable: you may be quicker, but booking a coach connection on the assumption that the outdoor walk takes only three minutes is asking Bologna Centrale to produce a small miracle.
What the walk is like with a suitcase
This is a city-street transfer, not an indoor connection between adjoining terminals. You will deal with station crowds, pedestrian crossings, kerbs and ordinary paving. A standard wheeled suitcase is manageable, and there is no reason to take a local bus simply to cover the short distance.
The connection is also not continuously covered. In rain, keep an umbrella or jacket accessible rather than buried at the bottom of your suitcase. With a stroller, large sports bag or two heavy cases, the actual walking distance remains short but crossing roads and moving through station crowds can easily double the effort.
If Bologna is only one change in a longer sequence of trains, buses and hotels, it helps to organize the rest of your trip with the transfer buffers included rather than treating each scheduled arrival as the moment you will physically appear at the next departure point.
Check that your bus really leaves from the Autostazione
This matters more than most visitors expect. โBologna bus stopโ does not always mean the main bus station. Regional buses, rail-replacement services and some other departures use street stops around Bologna Centrale instead.
Current RFI railway information, for example, assigns different replacement services to marked stops such as Palina C in Piazza Medaglie d’Oro and other paline on Viale Pietramellara, while certain services use stands inside the Autostazione. The exact arrangement depends on the route.
Before walking away from the railway station, read the location written on your ticket or operator app:
- โBologna Autostazioneโ or โPiazza XX Settembreโ: go to the main coach station.
- โStazione Centraleโ or โPiazza Medaglie d’Oroโ: check for a street stop outside the railway station.
- โViale Pietramellaraโ: do not automatically enter the Autostazione. Look for the specified stop number or palina.
- A numbered โcapolineaโ: this normally refers to a stand or terminus specified by the operator. Confirm it against the departure information when you arrive.
Palina is especially useful Italian to know here. It means the pole marking an ordinary roadside bus stop. A ticket telling you to use โPalina Cโ is not telling you to search for platform C inside a building.
How much connection time to allow
The physical distance is small, but separate train and coach tickets need more protection than the map suggests. A sensible planning allowance is:
- 5 to 10 minutes from the Piazza Medaglie d’Oro exit to the coach station with normal luggage.
- 10 to 15 minutes from a surface railway platform once you include getting through Bologna Centrale.
- 15 to 20 minutes from an underground AV platform, especially if you need a lift.
- At least 30 minutes between separate tickets in normal circumstances. Around 45 minutes gives you much more room for a delayed train, lift queues or finding the correct coach stand.
Those are planning buffers, not minimum check-in rules. Your coach operator may require you to be at the stand a specified number of minutes before departure, and a long-distance bus is not obliged to wait because your train arrived late.
What to do if you come out at Via de’ Carracci
If you reach street level and see Via de’ Carracci rather than Piazza Medaglie d’Oro, you have emerged on the north side of the station.
The simplest recovery with luggage is usually to follow station signs back through the railway complex toward Piazza Medaglie d’Oro, provided the internal route is accessible. Do not keep walking outside simply because your phone shows the bus station only a few hundred metres away in a straight line. The railway tracks sit between you and the destination, so an outdoor correction is less direct.
Once you reach the Piazza Medaglie d’Oro side, restart the normal route: outside, across Viale Pietramellara, then left toward Piazza XX Settembre.
Finding your coach once you arrive
The Autostazione has separate areas for arrivals and departures, covered passenger areas, information displays and numbered coach stands. The Italian word to watch for is Partenze, meaning departures. Arrivi means arrivals.
Check the departure board even if your ticket already gives a stand number. Operational assignments can change. Match the operator as well as the destination, since different companies can run toward the same city within a short period.
For luggage carried in the coach hold, follow the individual operator’s boarding procedure. Do not leave passports, medication, electronics or other essentials in a bag going underneath the bus. Ticket scanning, luggage tagging and baggage allowances are carrier rules rather than universal rules of the Bologna terminal.
If you have time to kill with luggage
The Autostazione introduced luggage lockers in January 2026, useful if you have a long wait before your coach and do not want to wheel your bags around central Bologna. Check the official locker information before relying on availability or booking arrangements.
For a straightforward train-to-coach connection, however, storing and retrieving a bag usually creates more work than simply taking it directly to the departure area.
Reduced mobility and step-free transfers
Use lifts rather than escalators when moving from the underground railway levels with a wheelchair, stroller or luggage that you cannot safely carry. At the coach station, assistance for passengers with reduced mobility is handled separately from railway assistance.
As of 2026, the Autostazione asks passengers needing its formal assistance service to contact the station at least 36 hours before coach departure. The designated meeting point is the movement/station-master office at the beginning of the departure stands, and passengers using the service are asked to present themselves at least 30 minutes before departure. Check the official passenger assistance page before travelling, since these procedures can change.
Late-night and early-morning transfers
The bus station states that its movement office operates throughout its 00:00 to 24:00 opening period, but individual ticket offices, cafรฉs and commercial services keep their own hours. For a very late departure, arrive with your ticket already accessible and know the exact operator and departure point rather than expecting every counter to be staffed.
Temporary road or tram works can also alter the exact pedestrian line through the station district. If barriers block the obvious crossing, use the signed pedestrian diversion rather than following other passengers into traffic. The mistakes that cost the most time
- Following โVia de’ Carracciโ after an AV arrival. Use Piazza Medaglie d’Oro for the shortest transfer.
- Assuming every bus leaves inside the coach station. Check whether your ticket names Piazza XX Settembre, Viale Pietramellara or a specific street-side palina.
- Counting only the 300-metre outdoor walk. Getting from an underground train to street level can take longer than the walk itself.
- Walking too far down Via Indipendenza. The coach station is at the beginning of the city-centre route, beside Piazza XX Settembre. If shops and historic-centre streets are replacing the station area around you, check your map.
- Waiting at a stand without checking the departure board. Coach assignments can move, so verify the operator, destination and time shortly before boarding.
If you remember only one piece of wayfinding, make it this: inside Bologna Centrale follow Piazza Medaglie d’Oro; outside, cross the boulevard and head left for Piazza XX Settembre 6. The distance is easy. Choosing the correct exit is the part that saves your connection.
