The high-speed section at Bologna Centrale is not beside the ordinary tracks. It sits about 23 metres below ground, with trains using platforms 16, 17, 18 and 19. From the main hall on Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro, follow signs for Binari 16-19 and Alta Velocitร , descend into the station underpass, continue toward the AV area, then go down again to the high-speed hall and your platform. The Bologna Centrale underground platforms take longer to reach than their numbers suggest, so check the departure board before you start walking.
The short version: follow the platform number, not the train brand
Most Frecciarossa and Italo services on the main Milan, Florence, Rome and Naples high-speed axis use platforms 16-19 below ground. That does not mean every high-speed train at Bologna leaves from there. Some Frecciarossa services use surface tracks, particularly trains following conventional routes rather than the main north-south high-speed line.
Your safest rule is simple: look up your exact train on the station departure board and follow the displayed binario. If it says 16, 17, 18 or 19, head for the underground AV station. If it gives another number, do not descend to the high-speed platforms just because the train says Frecciarossa or Italo on your ticket.
RFI’s current station information confirms that the AV section has four passenger tracks, numbered 16 through 19.

Why Bologna Centrale feels like several stations joined together
Bologna Centrale grew in layers. The historic station and many conventional tracks are at ground level, while additional east and west sections serve other trains. The dedicated Alta Velocitร station was built underneath the northern side of the complex.
RFI describes the AV station as a three-level underground structure connected by stairs, escalators and lifts. From top to bottom you encounter:
- Kiss&Ride level: the underground vehicle and passenger access area.
- Hall AV: the high-speed concourse, with waiting and passenger facilities.
- Piano AV: the lowest level, where platforms 16-19 are located.
The trains themselves are roughly 23 metres below ground. This vertical distance is the reason a platform change that looks trivial on a departure board can involve several escalators and a surprisingly long walk.
From the main entrance to platforms 16-19
The historic main entrance faces Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro, on the city-centre side of the railway. If you arrive on foot from central Bologna, this is the entrance you are most likely to use.
- Enter the main station building and find the large departure screens marked Partenze.
- Confirm the train number, departure time and Binario. Do this before committing to the underground route.
- Follow signs for Binari 16-19 or Alta Velocitร / AV.
- Descend to the pedestrian underpass beneath the surface railway tracks.
- Continue through the station toward the AV side. You are effectively walking underneath the conventional platforms toward the northern side of the complex.
- Follow the signs downward through the AV levels. Depending on the route you take, this involves successive escalators, stairs or lifts.
- At the Hall AV, check the departure displays again. Platform changes can happen after you have entered the underground section.
- Descend to the indicated platform, 16, 17, 18 or 19.
Do not worry if the route initially feels as though you are walking away from the trains. The AV platforms are below the far side of the station, not directly underneath the historic entrance.
Coming from another train at Bologna
If you arrive on a surface platform and are connecting to a high-speed departure, do not exit onto Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro unless you actually need something outside the station. Look for the nearest signs to the station underpasses and then follow 16-19 / AV.
The key mistake is treating platform 16 as though it should sit next to platform 15. Bologna’s numbering does not describe a simple row of platforms. Tracks 16-19 belong to an entirely different vertical section of the station.
Also watch for qualifiers such as EST and OVEST on conventional platform numbers. Binario 2, 2 Est and 2 Ovest are not interchangeable locations. If your arriving regional train uses one of these outer sections, add extra walking time before an AV connection.
How much transfer time should you allow?
For a first visit, allow roughly 10 minutes to get from the main station area to an underground platform once you know where you are going. Give yourself closer to 15 minutes if you have a suitcase, small children, limited mobility or simply want enough time to read the signs without sprinting.
For a connection from a surface train to platforms 16-19, the practical buffer depends on how the tickets were booked:
- One protected rail itinerary: follow the connection you were sold, but move directly toward the next platform when you arrive. Bologna is not a good station for adding a coffee stop to a tight transfer.
- Separate tickets: a buffer of around 30 minutes is much safer. A missed separately booked Frecciarossa or Italo service can become your financial problem rather than the railway’s.
- Heavy luggage, stroller or lift dependency: add more time. The distance itself is manageable, but waiting for lifts can remove the advantage of a theoretically short connection.
If you are still working out several Italian rail connections, the Italy by train guide explains the practical differences between high-speed, Intercity and regional services.
Platforms 16-17 and 18-19
The four underground tracks are arranged around two island platforms. Platforms 16 and 17 share one island, while 18 and 19 share the other.
There are usual traffic patterns, with one pair commonly serving trains heading north and the other trains heading south, but do not use that as a substitute for the departure board. Bologna is a major junction, trains can approach from several routes, and operational changes can put a service somewhere you did not expect.
Once you reach the correct island platform, check which side your train is using. Being on the 16/17 island does not automatically mean you are standing beside the correct track.
Finding your carriage once you are downstairs
High-speed trains can be long, so reaching the correct platform is only half the job. Your ticket will normally show:
- Treno: train number
- Carrozza: coach
- Posto: seat
Check the platform displays for coach-position information as departure approaches. If your carriage is at the opposite end of the train, walk along the platform before boarding rather than climbing aboard the first open door and dragging luggage through several crowded coaches.
Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed tickets are tied to a particular train and reserved seat. There is no paper-ticket validation ritual to perform before boarding these services. Your job at Bologna is to confirm the train, platform and coach.
With luggage, use the lifts strategically
Escalators are usually the quickest option for an able-bodied traveler with a small case, but there are several level changes between the historic station and the AV platforms. A large suitcase can make the route awkward, particularly when the station is busy.
RFI lists lift access to all four AV platforms, 16-19. The operator also warns that lifts can occasionally be unavailable, so travelers who depend on step-free access should check the current Bologna Centrale AV accessibility information rather than assuming every lift is operational.
With wheeled luggage, keep one hand free on escalators and avoid stopping immediately after reaching the top or bottom. There is often a stream of passengers directly behind you looking for exactly the same platform.
Strollers and reduced mobility
A stroller is possible through the AV station without carrying it down every staircase, but using lifts will generally take longer than following the main escalator flow. Build that into your transfer rather than relying on the minimum connection time displayed in a journey planner.
Passengers who need assistance can use RFI’s Sala Blu service. Bologna Centrale is part of the assisted-station network, and assistance can be arranged for the journey through the station and to the train. This is particularly useful here because changing between surface and underground platforms involves both distance and several vertical levels.
Arriving from Bologna Airport
The Marconi Express arrives on the northern side of Bologna Centrale, closer to the newer station infrastructure than Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro. After leaving the airport connection, follow signs into the railway station and then look specifically for Binari 16-19 / Alta Velocitร .
Do not use the time your airport train reaches Bologna as the time you can realistically board a Frecciarossa. You still have to leave the people-mover area, enter the railway circulation system, find the correct level and reach your coach. A flight delay can also make a separately booked high-speed ticket risky.
If you are arriving by taxi or being dropped off
Bologna’s AV station has access from the northern side around Via de’ Carracci and the underground Kiss&Ride area. If you are taking a taxi specifically to catch a train from platforms 16-19, tell the driver you need stazione Alta Velocitร or binari sedici-diciannove. Reaching the AV side directly can save the walk through the historic station.
If you are dropped at Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro instead, nothing has gone wrong. Use the main-hall route described above and allow the additional walking time.
Italian signs that matter here
- Partenze: departures
- Arrivi: arrivals
- Binario: track/platform number
- Alta Velocitร / AV: high speed
- Sottopassaggio: underpass
- Scale mobili: escalators
- Ascensore: lift/elevator
- Uscita: exit
- Carrozza: coach
- Posto: seat
- Cambio binario: platform change
- Ritardo: delay
If Bologna is one connection in a larger multi-city journey, you can build the rest of your Italy itinerary around the rail legs before deciding how much time to leave between trains.
The mistake that causes most trouble: going underground too early
Seeing Frecciarossa on your ticket is not enough reason to head straight for platforms 16-19. Check the board first. A high-speed train using a conventional route may be assigned a surface platform, and returning from the AV level after discovering your mistake costs several minutes.
The reverse is just as troublesome. If the board says 16-19, do not stand in the historic concourse waiting until five minutes before departure. You still have an underpass, several level changes and possibly a long walk to your carriage ahead of you.
What to do if the platform changes
Watch the electronic screens even after reaching the AV hall. If you see cambio binario, compare the new number carefully.
A switch between 16 and 17, or between 18 and 19, may only require moving to the opposite side of the same island platform. A change between the two island platforms requires going up and down again. A move from an underground track to a conventional surface track is more significant, so start moving immediately and follow the signs rather than trying to work out the station’s geography from the platform numbers.
If you miss the train
Do not simply board the next Frecciarossa or Italo and hope your old ticket will be accepted. High-speed tickets are train-specific, and what happens next depends on the fare conditions and why you missed the connection.
If a delayed incoming train caused the problem and the journeys were sold as one protected itinerary, go directly to the relevant operator’s assistance point or staff member and ask about riprotezione, meaning rebooking or rerouting onto another service.
If you created the connection yourself with separate tickets, especially tickets from different operators, automatic protection should not be assumed. Check the conditions of the missed ticket before boarding anything else.
The useful mental map is simply this: street and conventional station at the top, pedestrian connections underneath, AV hall farther down, platforms 16-19 at the bottom. Confirm the binario before descending, follow the yellow railway signs rather than guessing from destination, and give the station a few more minutes than the platform numbers seem to require.
