Opening Hours

Open daily from early April to early or mid November, generally from 09:00 until late afternoon or early evening, with last admission 1 to 2 hours before closing. Closed in winter. Exact seasonal hours and special evening openings are published each year on the official site.

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle spread over 12 hectares on the sunny slopes above Merano, combining botanical garden, landscape park and art installation in one paid attraction. More than 80 different garden landscapes are arranged in themed zones: Sun Gardens with Mediterranean species, Water and Terraced Gardens with ponds and cascades, Forests of the World, and a series of intimate themed corners devoted to roses, succulents, hydrangeas and more. Winding paths climb and loop across an altitude difference of around 100 meters, constantly opening new views over Merano and the surrounding mountains. Interactive stations and viewing platforms punctuate the walk, including sound installations, a palm tree viewing deck suspended above the hillside, a glass platform jutting out over the gardens, and shaded rest stops where you can simply sit and enjoy the scenery. At the heart of the complex stands Trauttmansdorff Castle itself, which houses the Touriseum, a museum devoted to the history of tourism in the Alps and in South Tyrol. Combined tickets allow access to both the gardens and the museum, making it easy to spend half a day or more on site. Flowering peaks vary with the seasons, so the experience is different in spring, summer, and autumn: cherry blossoms and tulips give way to summer roses and late season dahlias. The gardens are fully outdoor, so visits are best planned for dry days, though there are cafes and indoor museum spaces if a shower passes through. Families will appreciate dedicated play areas and kid friendly exhibits, while plant enthusiasts can linger over labels and themed collections. Tickets are sold at the entrance and online via the official website, which also lists evening concerts and special events. For travelers exploring South Tyrol, Trauttmansdorff is one of the region’s most polished paid attractions and a refreshing change of pace from churches and castles.
