The famous Italian artworks people often look for in the wrong place 🎨

Michelangelo’s David is not at the Uffizi.

The Pietà and Sistine Chapel are both in Vatican City—but they are different visits.

Leonardo’s Last Supper is not hanging in Milan’s main art gallery. It is still on the wall of a former monastery dining room.

And some of the art I would most strongly recommend in Rome is not inside a museum at all.

That is why I think planning an art-focused Italy trip should start with one question:

Which original do you actually want to see?

Then find the exact building, check whether it needs a reservation, and build that part of your day around it.

A few visits deserve especially early attention, including Leonardo’s Last Supper, Galleria Borghese, Cappella Sansevero and the Scrovegni Chapel.

And before travelling specifically for one artwork, always check the museum’s current display information. Works can be temporarily moved, loaned or under restoration.

You do not need to turn your Italy trip into an art-history course.

Choose a few originals that genuinely interest you and give yourself enough time to actually look at them.

Comment PLAN and I’ll send you the app and pass details.

Save this for your Italy planning. 🇮🇹

One of the places in Turin I would give far more time than you think you need: @museirealitorino 👑

The Musei Reali are not just one palace with a few decorated rooms. The complex brings together several collections and spaces, including Palazzo Reale, the Armeria Reale, Galleria Sabauda, Museo di Antichità and the Cappella della Sindone.

And Palazzo Reale itself is the kind of place where I constantly stop looking straight ahead and start looking up, painted ceilings, chandeliers, gilded rooms, enormous porcelain pieces and details everywhere.

The Armeria Reale was another favourite. Even if historic weapons and armour are not normally your thing, the setting alone makes it worth walking through.

My advice: don’t squeeze the Musei Reali between two other major sights. The ticket covers the museum route across the complex, so give yourself enough time to actually explore rather than rushing from room to room. The official FAQ confirms that the single Musei Reali ticket includes all the museum rooms.

📍 Musei Reali Torino, Piazzetta Reale, Turin
🏛️ @museirealitorino
🕒 Check the official website before visiting for current opening times and any temporary closures.

This was easily one of the places I enjoyed most in Turin.

Have you visited the Musei Reali, or would you add them to your Turin list?

Your Italy train is booked. You’re not done yet.

Before a travel day, I’d still want to check three things: whether any strike or disruption could affect the route, what the ticket actually requires, and what makes sense once I arrive.

That last one matters more than people think. If you arrive in Florence around lunchtime, for example, you probably don’t want a restaurant recommendation that sends you 30 minutes in the wrong direction.

This is where I use the Italy on Foot Travel Concierge: for the practical questions that come up around your actual trip, from trains and tickets to lunch and changed plans.

For live rail disruption information, always confirm with the official train operator before travelling.

Your Italian train has been replaced by a bus, now what?

The biggest mistake is treating the replacement as your original train with different wheels.

The bus may leave from a completely different place. It may leave earlier. Two buses showing the same destination can make different stops. And the connection you planned after the train may no longer be comfortable.

One documented 2026 example had a replacement bus leaving 39 minutes before the train it replaced. Another timetable had two buses leaving Udine for Villach at exactly the same time, one taking 2 hours and the other 3 hours 9 minutes.

So when you see bus sostitutivo, check four things first:

📍 the exact departure stop
🕐 the replacement timetable
🎟️ the rules for your particular ticket
🚆 what happens to your next connection

Also check separately if you’re travelling with a bicycle, pet or accessibility requirements. Those arrangements may not be identical to the train.

My rule: treat the replacement as a new transfer, not merely a different vehicle.

Flights booked, but your Italy trip still feels like a collection of saved places?

This is an example of how I use Italy on Foot to go from dates and cities to an actual trip plan.

I start with the route, review it before building the days, then keep the itinerary and day map together once the plan is ready.

Alba is one of those places I wouldn’t rush through on a Langhe trip. 🍝

Most people associate Alba with white truffles and wine country, correctly, but give yourself a few hours to actually walk the city too.

The historic centre is compact, easy to explore on foot, and full of the details that make a stop here worthwhile: cobbled streets, old palazzi, small food shops and, naturally, a lot of truffle.

If truffles are on your list, save @eleattartufialba in Piazza Garibaldi. They specialise in truffle products, and it’s a good place to learn a little more about what you’re actually buying rather than grabbing the first “truffle” souvenir you see. 🍄

My advice: don’t treat Alba only as the place you sleep between winery visits. Have lunch, walk the centre, browse the food shops and then head out into the Langhe.

📍 Éleat Tartufi Alba, Piazza Garibaldi 2

Have you been to Alba, or is it still on your Piemonte list?

Italian phrases to learn before visiting Italy 🇮🇹

You do not need to learn Italian before your trip.

But learning the right 20 phrases will make cafés, restaurants, hotels and train stations much easier.

The biggest mistake isn’t bad pronunciation. It’s treating every interaction like it should begin immediately with your question.

In Italy, start with:

Buongiorno.
Then scusi if you need someone’s attention.
Use vorrei when ordering or asking for something.
Finish with grazie mille and arrivederci.

That alone goes a long way.

A few especially useful ones to save:

☕ Vorrei un caffè, per favore.
I’d like a coffee, please.

🚆 Da quale binario parte il treno per Roma?
Which platform does the train to Rome leave from?

🍝 Il conto, per favore.
The bill, please.

🚻 Scusi, dov’è il bagno?
Excuse me, where is the bathroom?

🤷 Non capisco. Può ripetere, per favore?
I don’t understand. Can you repeat, please?

And one small correction that makes a big difference:

Voglio = I want
Vorrei = I would like

Use vorrei.

You’re not trying to impress anyone with perfect Italian. You’re showing that you understand the interaction starts with another person, not with your request.

Save this before Italy and send it to whoever is travelling with you.

How to spot tourist traps in Italy 🇮🇹

Not every busy restaurant, English menu, expensive coffee or place near a famous monument is a tourist trap.

The better test is this:

Can you see the price?
Can you verify who you’re dealing with?
Can you leave without being pressured?

The biggest red flags usually start with behavior: someone approaches you first, the price stays vague, “official” can’t be verified, you’re pushed to decide immediately, or a “free” bracelet, rose, favor or bit of help suddenly comes with a demand for money.

My simple rule:

⚠️ 1 red flag: pause and verify
⚠️ 2 red flags: slow down and compare
⚠️ 3 red flags: walk away

And you do not need a long explanation.

“No, grazie.”

Say it once, calmly, and keep moving.

If someone physically blocks, intimidates or threatens you, stop worrying about being polite. Move somewhere public and safe and call 112 in Italy.

The goal isn’t to be suspicious of everyone. It’s to protect three things: price, proof and choice.

Save this before your Italy trip and send it to the friend who always stops when a stranger says, “My friend, special price for you.” 😅
