Boarding the T2 at Florence Airport is straightforward even with a suitcase: the platform is close to the terminal, the tram is step-free, and you roll your bag directly aboard. The catch is that there are no luggage racks, so your case stays on the floor with you. The Florence airport tram with luggage works best when you know the baggage limits, have your ticket sorted before the doors close, and avoid blocking the doorway once you are inside.
Where to Find the Tram After Arrivals
The airport stop is called Peretola Aeroporto, the end of Florence’s T2 line. According to GEST, the tram operator, it is about a two-minute walk from the arrivals and departures terminal.
After leaving the terminal, turn left and follow signs for Tramvia or T2. You are not looking for a shuttle bus or a railway station. The tram has its own outdoor platform beside the airport area.
Because Peretola Aeroporto is the terminus, there is no direction puzzle. The citybound tram is T2 toward San Marco – Università. For Santa Maria Novella railway station, stay aboard until Alamanni – Stazione S.M.N.
What Boarding With a Suitcase Actually Involves
There is no high train step to wrestle a suitcase over. GEST states that all Florence tram vehicles and platforms are accessible to passengers with reduced mobility, so boarding is essentially a roll-on movement from platform to vehicle.
- Let passengers leave the tram before moving toward the door.
- Choose a doorway with space rather than automatically joining the biggest group beside the nearest door.
- If the door has not opened, use the door-opening button.
- Roll the suitcase straight aboard.
- Move away from the doorway immediately so the next passengers can enter.
- Place the case on the floor beside you or directly in front of your legs and keep hold of it while the tram moves.
GEST specifically says Florence trams have no dedicated luggage-storage area. There is no overhead rack, luggage shelf or airport-style suitcase bay. A large roller case remains your responsibility for the whole journey.
Do not leave it across an aisle or in the door area. The operator’s current transport conditions require baggage to be placed on the floor without obstructing passengers moving to and from the doors.
The Luggage Size Rules Are Stricter Than Many Travelers Expect
This is the part worth checking before arriving with a very large checked suitcase. Under GEST’s August 2026 Conditions of Transport, each passenger may carry one bag free if it is no larger than 50 × 30 × 25 cm and weighs no more than 10 kg.
Larger baggage can be carried up to a maximum of 80 × 45 × 25 cm and 20 kg, with no more than two such pieces per passenger, but an additional ticket is required for each chargeable piece. Anything exceeding the maximum dimensions or weight is not permitted under the formal conditions.
There is currently an awkward inconsistency in GEST’s own published information: its airport information page gives 55 × 40 × 20 cm as the free allowance, while the August 2026 formal transport conditions state 50 × 30 × 25 cm. If your bag is close to either limit, use the formal conditions as the safer reference and confirm directly with GEST if necessary.
One practical consequence is that an airline’s baggage allowance tells you nothing about the tram allowance. A checked suitcase accepted by your airline can still be thicker than the tram operator’s stated 25 cm maximum.
If Your Suitcase Needs an Extra Ticket
The standard Florence urban ticket currently costs €2 and is valid for 90 minutes after validation or activation. The August 2026 GEST rules require a ticket for each larger piece of baggage that falls into the chargeable category.
If you know you need a baggage ticket, buying the required tickets at the airport platform machine is the least confusing method. Do not expect to tap the same bank card repeatedly to create additional tickets: Autolinee Toscane’s contactless system follows the rule one card or device, one passenger ticket.
How to Buy and Validate the Passenger Ticket
There is no special airport fare. T2 uses the normal Florence urban ticket. Current fares are listed on GEST’s ticket page.
- Ticket machine: every tram stop has an automatic machine. Buy the ticket before boarding, then validate the paper ticket immediately after you get on.
- Contactless: tap an accepted bank card, phone or wearable on the reader inside the tram. Wait for the green confirmation.
- AT app: buy a digital ticket and activate it when starting the journey.
With a suitcase in one hand, the platform machine can be easier than trying to unlock a phone and deal with payment after boarding. If you do use contactless, keep the same physical card or device available in case an inspector asks to check the ticket.
For two travelers, one physical bank card cannot simply be tapped twice for two passenger tickets. Use separate cards/devices or buy the required tickets through another channel.
Where to Stand Once You Are On Board
The best position is not a particular secret luggage section because none exists. Look for ordinary floor space where your case can remain close to you without sitting in the doorway.
Keep the wheels controlled. Trams accelerate, brake and curve, and an upright roller that is not being held can move surprisingly quickly. Keeping the handle in your hand or the case against your legs is simpler than trying to wedge it somewhere farther away.
Do not put a suitcase on a passenger seat. Also avoid occupying wheelchair positions with baggage. GEST provides four wheelchair positions on its trams, and passengers who need those designated spaces take priority.
If you arrive as a family with a stroller, pushchairs and children’s strollers are carried free under the operator’s rules. The level-access platforms also remove most of the awkward lifting that makes buses difficult with a sleeping child and several bags.
What to Do When the First Tram Is Packed
A suitcase changes the calculation when a tram arrives completely full. GEST’s rules explicitly allow staff to refuse baggage when vehicles are overcrowded.
Do not force a large case into closing doors simply because you can see a few inches of floor. Let the tram go and use the next service. Daytime trams are normally frequent, although intervals are longer early in the morning, late at night, and on Sundays and public holidays. Check the current GEST timetable if timing is tight.
This is especially sensible when you have two substantial cases. You need enough room not only to enter but also to get them back through the doors at your stop without trapping everyone behind you.
Getting Off at Santa Maria Novella With Bags
For a train connection, the stop to remember is Alamanni – Stazione S.M.N. It comes roughly 20 minutes after leaving the airport area and is beside Florence Santa Maria Novella station.
Start preparing one stop before Alamanni rather than waiting until the doors open. Bring the suitcase upright, check that straps and smaller bags are secure, and move toward a door without blocking passengers who are still getting off at the preceding stop.
At Alamanni, roll off and follow the signs toward Stazione. Do not remain aboard expecting the tram to take you to an underground railway entrance. Florence’s tram runs at street level, and the transfer to the railway station is made on foot.
If your destination is farther into the northern historic center rather than the railway station, you can remain on T2. For Hotels in the Historic Center, Check the Last Walk Before You Ride
The T2 reaches the edges of central Florence, not every hotel door. A property described as “near the Duomo” could still leave you pulling a suitcase over several blocks of stone paving after you leave the tram.
Check the hotel’s exact address before deciding automatically to get off at the railway station. Alamanni is useful for the station side of the center, while San Marco can make more sense for accommodation around the Accademia and northern central streets.

Late Arrivals: Do Not Confuse Network Closing Time With the Last Airport Departure
GEST describes the tram network as operating until around 00:30 Sunday through Thursday and later on Friday and Saturday nights, but that does not mean you can arrive at the airport platform at 00:25 and expect a citybound tram.
The currently published first and last departures from Peretola Aeroporto toward San Marco are:
- First tram: 05:00 every day.
- Last tram Sunday through Thursday: 23:58.
- Last tram Friday and Saturday: 01:15.
If baggage reclaim pushes you past the last airport departure, stop looking for another tram platform. You will need a taxi, NCC car service or another available road transfer.
For a flight arrival close to the cutoff, check the live service information rather than relying only on the scheduled landing time. Taxiing to the stand, walking through the terminal and waiting for checked bags can easily be the part that decides which side of the final tram you land on.
Small Mistakes That Make the Trip Harder
- Waiting to validate a paper ticket: validation happens as soon as you board, not halfway through the journey when you notice an inspector.
- Assuming there will be a luggage rack: there is not. Plan to keep the suitcase on the floor with you.
- Blocking the doors: the open floor immediately beside a door may look convenient, but passengers need that space at every stop.
- Using one contactless card for the whole group: one card or payment device produces one passenger ticket.
- Ignoring the formal baggage dimensions: large airline cases do not automatically comply with tram limits.
- Getting off at the wrong central stop: use Alamanni – Stazione S.M.N. for the main railway station rather than riding automatically to the end of T2.
- Squeezing onto a packed vehicle: with a large case, waiting for the next tram is often the safer solution and is consistent with GEST’s crowding rules.
If the Ticket Machine or Payment Does Not Work
The useful backup at the airport is the onboard contactless reader. If the platform machine is unavailable, board only if you have another valid way to pay, such as contactless or an activated digital ticket.
When tapping onboard, look for the green confirmation. A red response means the purchase has not succeeded. Do not assume that holding the card near the reader was enough.
If service itself is disrupted, check the electronic information at the platform and GEST’s current notices. Engineering work and strikes can occasionally shorten the line or produce replacement transport. With several suitcases, finding that out while you are still at the airport terminus is considerably easier than discovering it after boarding.
