You can pay for Florence’s tram directly on board with a contactless bank card, phone, or smartwatch. Tap the black contactless reader as soon as you board and wait for the green confirmation. That single tap both buys and validates your ticket. You do not tap out when leaving the tram.
The Florence tram contactless payment system is called Tip Tap. It accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard, and American Express credit, debit, and prepaid cards, plus supported digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Pay. No registration or transport app is required.
The most important distinction: where you tap matters
Florence has two different ways of using a bank card around a tram stop, and they are easy to confuse.
- Tap your bank card on the black reader inside the tram: you are buying a digital ticket directly. The green confirmation means the ticket is already validated.
- Use your bank card at the ticket machine on the platform: you are paying for a physical ticket. Take that ticket with you and validate it after boarding.
Paying contactlessly at the platform vending machine does not mean your bank card has become your ticket. You have bought a paper ticket, so the paper ticket still needs to be validated.
GEST, the Florence tram operator, says the onboard contactless readers are black. Traditional validators for paper tickets are yellow. On the Sirio trams, the two types of machines are positioned around the door areas, so check which reader you are using before presenting your card.
How to pay on board step by step
- Board the tram with your card, phone, or watch ready.
- Look for the black contactless validator near the doors.
- Hold your card or device against the reader rather than waving it past quickly.
- Wait for the confirmation.
- If the screen or light turns green, the purchase succeeded and your ticket is valid.
- Move away from the doorway so other passengers can board.
There is no paper ticket or receipt to collect. Your payment method itself becomes the proof that you paid.

How much does a contactless tram ticket cost?
As of August 2026, the standard Florence urban ticket costs €2.00 and is valid for 90 minutes from activation. Contactless payment does not add a surcharge.
If you see a website or older travel guide quoting €1.70, that information predates the fare increase that took effect on August 1, 2026. Current fares are published by Autolinee Toscane.
Do you tap again when getting off?
No. Florence’s tram is an urban service, so you tap when you board and do not tap when you leave.
This differs from some of Tuscany’s extra-urban and mixed-fare buses, where passengers using Tip Tap must tap both on and off. Do not copy that procedure onto the Florence tram.
What happens if you change trams or transfer to a bus?
Tap again every time you board another tram or an eligible urban bus, even when your original 90-minute ticket is still valid.
The system recognizes the same payment method and, while the original ticket remains valid, does not charge another urban ticket. The second tap records that you boarded the next vehicle.
The important phrase here is the same payment method. If you began the trip with your physical Visa card, continue using that physical card. If you began with your phone, continue using the phone.
Do not switch between your phone and the physical card
A phone wallet and the physical card linked to it can be recognized as different payment credentials. If you tap your phone first and your physical card later, the system can treat them as separate passengers and make a second charge.
The same applies to a smartwatch. Pick one device for the journey and keep using it until you are finished.
One card cannot pay for your whole group
A single physical card can buy a ticket for only one passenger at a time. You cannot tap the same card four times to pay for a family of four.
Each paying traveler should therefore use a different card or payment device. Autolinee Toscane also allows different devices linked to the same underlying card to be treated separately, so, for example, one passenger could use the physical card while another uses a phone on which that card has been digitized. Each person must then retain the particular card or device they used.
For larger groups, buying tickets through the AT app or using another ticket format can be less confusing than organizing several payment devices at the tram door.
Traveling with children
Current Autolinee Toscane rules allow one child under 11 to travel free when accompanied by an adult passenger. If one adult is accompanying more than one child under 11, only one travels free and ordinary tickets are required for the others. Check the operator’s current child travel rules if this affects your group.
What ticket inspectors need to see
If inspectors board, there is no QR code or paper receipt to find. Present the same card, phone, or watch that you tapped when boarding.
The inspection device checks whether that payment credential has a valid ticket associated with it. Autolinee Toscane states that inspectors do not need to read or store your personal banking information for this verification.
This is another reason not to put your phone away with a dead battery after paying. If the phone was your ticket, you need to be able to present that device during an inspection.
What if the validator shows red?
A red confirmation means the transaction failed. Do not assume that holding the card near the machine was enough.
First, hold the card still against the reader and try again. If it continues to fail, possible causes include an unsupported card, an expired or blocked card, insufficient funds, or a problem with the contactless function.
If you were using a phone or smartwatch, try an accepted physical bank card instead. Florence tram stops also have ticket vending machines, so if you cannot obtain a successful onboard payment, get off and buy a normal ticket before continuing rather than riding without proof of payment.
With luggage, it helps to have your payment method out before the tram arrives. The reader is close to the door area, and searching through a backpack while passengers are boarding is an excellent way to create a small Florentine traffic jam without involving a single Fiat.
Green screen but no bank transaction?
Do not panic if the charge does not appear instantly in your banking app. Autolinee Toscane warns that processing can take several days.
Your bank may also display a temporary €1 pre-authorization. The operator says this is a banking-network check on available funds, not necessarily the final ticket charge.
For travel days involving several transport changes, you can organize the rest of your Italy trip before setting off, which is particularly useful when a Florence tram ride connects with a train or a longer Tuscan bus journey.
The 90-minute ticket has one important limitation
A normal Florence urban ticket can cover a surprisingly broad local network, including trams, qualifying buses and, with eligible ticket formats, certain regional train journeys within the Florence area.
The onboard Tip Tap ticket is different: Autolinee Toscane specifically excludes contactless onboard tickets from the regional-train integration.
So do not tap your bank card on the tram, arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, and assume the same contactless ticket lets you continue on a regional train just because you are still inside the 90-minute window. Buy the appropriate railway-valid ticket before boarding the train.
If you bought a paper ticket instead
Every Florence tram stop has a ticket vending machine. If you buy a physical ticket there, carry it onto the tram and use the traditional validator when you board.
The 90-minute clock begins when the ticket is validated, not simply when you bought it. Keep the ticket for the entire journey because inspectors may ask to see it.
The practical sequence is:
- Buy the ticket at the platform machine.
- Take the printed ticket.
- Board the tram.
- Insert the ticket into the traditional onboard validator.
- Check that it has been successfully validated.
- Keep it until you have finished traveling.
Do not tap your bank card on the black onboard reader as well unless you actually want to buy a second ticket.
Airport tram: the same payment rules apply
There is no special ticketing procedure for tram T2 from Florence Airport. At Peretola Aeroporto, you can either buy a ticket from the stop’s vending machine or board and pay directly on the contactless reader.
If paying aboard, wait until you are physically on the tram and use the black reader. The green confirmation is what matters. You do not need to hunt for a separate airport surcharge ticket, and there is no additional validation step after a successful onboard tap.
The three mistakes most likely to cause trouble
- Tapping at the platform vending machine and forgetting the paper ticket: you paid for a ticket, not for travel attached to your bank card. Take and validate the printed ticket.
- Switching from phone to physical card during a transfer: the system may see two different payment methods and charge twice.
- Trying to pay for several adults with one card: one card or device corresponds to one passenger.
For a simple Florence tram journey, the easiest routine is therefore very short: board, find the black reader, tap once, wait for green, and keep the same card or device available until you have finished traveling.
