Opening Hours
The cathedral itself is free with set visiting hours; access to Brunelleschi’s Dome, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Baptistery, Museum, and Crypt is by dated pass with timed entries. Hours and available passes vary-always confirm on the official ticket site.
Florence’s cathedral complex is managed by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and includes multiple paid monuments on a single square. The star attraction is Brunelleschi’s Dome, an engineering marvel that still dominates the city skyline. Climbing its narrow staircases rewards you with close-up views of the frescoed interior and a 360-degree panorama over tiled roofs and surrounding hills. Separate timed entrances give access to Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery with its glittering mosaics, the Opera del Duomo Museum-with original sculptures by Donatello and fragments from the facade-and the archaeological remains of Santa Reparata beneath the cathedral floor. The Opera sells combined passes valid for several days, and most time slots for the dome sell out well in advance. If you want to climb, book those first, then build the rest of your visit around that time. Dress modestly and be prepared for lots of stairs.
