A spelling mistake on a train booking is worth fixing before you travel. On many Trenitalia and all Italo services, tickets are nominative and staff can ask for identification. If you notice your name wrong on an Italian train ticket, do not assume that one missing letter will automatically be ignored. Neither major operator publishes a general āminor typos are acceptableā rule. The safest approach is simple: if the name shown does not reasonably match your passport or other valid ID, correct it while changes are still permitted.

The consequences depend on the train operator, the type of train and sometimes the fare you bought. A typo on a Frecciarossa ticket is not handled in exactly the same way as a mistake on a Trenitalia regional ticket or an Italo booking.
First check what kind of ticket you have
Look at the top of the ticket or booking confirmation before trying to fix anything. You are usually dealing with one of these situations:
- Trenitalia Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca or Intercity: national long-distance tickets are nominative.
- Trenitalia regional train: digital and certain electronic regional tickets are also nominative and personal.
- Italo: tickets are issued in the passenger’s name, and Italo states that a valid identity document may be requested to confirm that the passenger corresponds to the name on the ticket.
- A paper regional ticket with no passenger name printed on it: there is no name on the ticket to compare with your ID, so this particular problem does not arise.
If you are still getting used to the differences between Frecciarossa, Italo, Intercity and regional services, the Italy on Foot guide to train travel in Italy explains which tickets are tied to a particular train and which are more flexible.
How serious does the spelling mistake need to be?
Rail operators do not publish a useful traveler-friendly list saying that one-letter errors are acceptable but two-letter errors are not. The formal requirement is based on the passenger’s identity corresponding to the nominative ticket.
That means you should not try to calculate how much misspelling you can get away with. Use this practical rule instead:
- One obvious typing error: fix it if the system allows you to do so. Do not buy another ticket automatically just because āAndersonā became āAndeson.ā
- Nickname instead of legal name: change it. āLizā on the ticket and āElizabethā on the passport is an unnecessary argument to have with a conductor.
- Completely different surname: treat this as a genuine mismatch, not a typo.
- Ticket accidentally booked in your partner’s name: this is effectively a passenger-name change and must be dealt with under the operator’s fare rules.
- First and last names reversed: correct them if possible, especially if the resulting ticket is difficult to reconcile with the ID.
- Accents or special characters changed by the booking system: first check the actual booking record. Some systems normalize characters when issuing tickets. If the operator itself produced the altered spelling from information you entered correctly, do not panic and buy a second ticket immediately. Ask the operator if you are unsure.
Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Intercity: usually fix it before departure
Trenitalia’s current rules require a passenger name on tickets for its national services, including Frecce and Intercity trains. On board, you must show the ticket and, if requested, a valid identification document.
For most eligible tickets, Trenitalia allows the passenger name to be changed free of charge and an unlimited number of times before the train’s departure. Certain inherently personal offers and products are excluded, including some subscriptions, age-based offers, discount cards and special concessions. You can check the current rules on Trenitalia’s official nominative ticket page.

How to change the name online
For an eligible ticketless booking, retrieve the journey in the Trenitalia website or app. Depending on the interface language, look for Gestisci, meaning āManage,ā followed by Cambio dati passeggero, the passenger-details change function.
Trenitalia also lists these places for eligible name changes before departure:
- a staffed biglietteria, or ticket office;
- an authorized travel agency;
- Trenitalia Customer Service points;
- a FrecciaDesk where available;
- the Trenitalia call center.
The important deadline is the scheduled departure. Once the booked train has departed, Trenitalia does not allow a passenger-name change on these tickets.
What happens if Trenitalia checks a mismatched name on board?
This is where treating the issue as āonly a typoā can become expensive. Trenitalia’s published rules distinguish between tickets whose conditions allow a passenger-name change and tickets whose conditions do not.
For an eligible ticket where the passenger name does not correspond to the ID, Trenitalia states that the passenger can be regularized by paying any difference between the fare already paid and the full Base fare, plus a ā¬10 penalty. If the particular offer does not allow a name change, a passenger whose name does not correspond to the identification document can be treated as traveling without a valid ticket, with the full Base fare plus a ā¬50 penalty.
That is why correcting a misspelling before reaching the platform is much better than asking the conductor to decide whether it looks harmless.
Trenitalia regional tickets are different
Do not apply the Frecciarossa name-change rule automatically to a Regionale ticket. Trenitalia says that online regional tickets are nominative, personal and non-transferable, and staff can request a valid identity document. It also states that passenger-name changes are not provided for regional tickets.
If you have entered the wrong passenger name on a digital regional booking, contact Trenitalia or ask at a staffed ticket office before departure rather than trying to edit another field and hoping it changes the passenger identity. Depending on what was entered and how much the journey costs, purchasing a correctly issued replacement may ultimately be simpler, but ask first rather than unnecessarily paying twice.
Also remember that changing the departure time of a regional ticket is not the same thing as changing its passenger. A ticket-management screen allowing you to alter the train does not mean the name itself can be replaced.
Italo tickets also need to correspond to your ID
Italo states that its tickets are nominative and that onboard staff may request valid identification. Its rules specifically say that a ticket can be considered unusable if the passenger cannot provide valid identification proving that they correspond to the name shown on the ticket.
Name-change options depend on the fare or commercial offer you purchased. Italo’s current Flex fare, for example, permits changes to the passenger name for a fee up to three minutes before departure. Other offers can have different conditions, so check your particular booking rather than assuming every Italo ticket has the same flexibility. The operator’s official FAQ and fare conditions give the current rules.
Where to look in the Italo booking
Retrieve the journey using your ticket code and passenger details and open Manage Journey or the equivalent Italian booking-management option. If the fare does not offer the correction you need online, contact Italo Assistance or find a staffed Italo ticket office in the station.
If you are building several rail journeys into the same trip, it helps to keep booking codes, operator apps and departure stations together in one place. You can organize the rest of your Italy route so a name correction or schedule change does not get lost among separate reservations.
What if you booked through Trainline, Omio or another reseller?
Changing your account profile on the reseller’s website does not necessarily change a ticket that has already been issued.
Open the actual reservation and check the passenger name printed on the ticket or stored in the operator’s booking record. If there is a change function, use it. Otherwise contact the company that sold the ticket. Have the operator’s PNR or ticket code ready as well as the reseller’s booking number.
If the booking can also be retrieved directly on Trenitalia or Italo, check whether the operator offers a passenger-details function there. Do not cancel and repurchase an expensive high-speed ticket until you know whether the original can simply be corrected.
What to do if you notice the mistake at the station
If you still have time before departure, deal with the name before going through any platform access gates or boarding.
- Open the ticket and confirm exactly how the passenger name is written.
- Have the passport or national ID you will travel with ready.
- Try the operator’s booking-management function.
- If that fails, look for Biglietteria, Assistenza, Customer Service, FrecciaDesk or an Italo ticket desk, depending on your train.
- Show staff both the ticket and your ID and say, āC’ĆØ un errore nel nome sul bigliettoā, meaning āThere is an error in the name on the ticket.ā
For Trenitalia national trains, do this before the scheduled departure because name changes stop once the train has left. With Italo, some permitted changes can remain available very close to departure, but the exact deadline and fee depend on the fare.
If the train leaves in five minutes
Do not spend the last few minutes repeatedly fighting with an app if there is staffed assistance beside the platform. Go directly to the operator’s staff with the ticket and ID.
If the name belongs to an entirely different person, or your surname is substantially wrong, boarding and hoping nobody checks is a poor option. Both operators reserve the right to verify identity, and a gate opening after scanning your QR code does not prove that the passenger name has been accepted. Station gates primarily check the ticket for access; an onboard identity check is a separate issue.
Do you need your passport on the train?
You need a valid identification document when the ticket conditions require identity verification. For foreign travelers, carrying the passport used for the trip is the simplest option. A photograph of the passport on your phone should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for a valid identification document.
The passenger name also matters more when your fare depends on who you are. Youth, senior, loyalty, subscription and other personal discounts can have additional eligibility conditions. A correct spelling does not make a ticket valid if the traveler is not entitled to the underlying discount.
Do not confuse a passenger-name change with changing the booking owner
The email address or account used to buy a ticket does not normally have to belong to the traveler. One person can purchase tickets for family members or friends.
What matters is the passenger information attached to each nominative ticket. If you bought four tickets from your own account, there is no problem merely because all four confirmation emails came to you. Check the individual passenger names shown in the reservation.
The safest rule before you board
Compare the ticket with the identification document you plan to carry. If the difference is obviously a system formatting issue, verify it rather than immediately repurchasing. If it is an actual misspelling, nickname, wrong surname or wrong passenger, correct it while the operator still allows changes.
Most small mistakes are much easier to solve on your phone or at a ticket desk before departure than during an onboard inspection. The expensive mistake is not necessarily typing one letter incorrectly. It is noticing the error, assuming Italian railway staff have an unofficial typo allowance, and leaving it unresolved until after the train has departed.
