Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper is not housed in a traditional museum but painted directly onto the refectory wall beside the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Its fragile condition is due to Leonardo’s experimental technique, compounded by centuries of wear, war damage, and numerous restorations. As a result, visitation is tightly controlled: guests enter in small groups, passing through a series of air-locked rooms to protect the mural’s delicate environment, and are allowed roughly 15 minutes in the presence of the masterpiece. Seeing it in person, the psychological intensity of the scene becomes apparent, with each apostle’s gesture illustrating their reaction to Christ’s announcement of betrayal, while the architecture’s perspective lines inexorably focus attention on Christ himself. Due to overwhelming demand, tickets are released in limited batches (and frequently sell out within minutes), and many reputable guided tours also draw from the same pool. When planning your Milan itinerary, it’s wise to secure your Last Supper reservation first, then arrange other activities around your confirmed slot to avoid disappointment.
