Smaller and more compact than Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried under a thicker layer of volcanic material, which preserved upper stories, wooden fittings and delicate details to an extraordinary degree. Many visitors find it easier to grasp than its larger neighbor: streets are tighter, houses closer together and the sea-front vaults where hundreds of skeletons were found are deeply moving. You can still see carbonized wooden beams, painted facades and mosaic floors in situ. Because of its size, Herculaneum works well as a half-day excursion from Naples or along the Circumvesuviana railway, and it combines nicely with a hike to Vesuvius or a separate day at Pompeii. Facilities include a small visitor center and basic services, but the focus is very much on the site itself, so bringing water, sun protection and comfortable shoes is essential. Timed tickets and combined passes may be available through official channels, especially in high season.
