Buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, Pompeii is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites and offers an entire Roman town frozen in time. Highlights include the Forum, the amphitheater, the Villa of the Mysteries and smaller domestic spaces where everyday details, like election slogans or wine price lists, are still visible on the walls. The site is huge and largely exposed, so good shoes, sun protection and water are essential, especially in summer.
