The Trullo Sovrano is the largest and most elaborate trullo in Alberobello, distinguished as the only two-storey example of this unique conical architecture. As a house-museum, it offers visitors an immersive look at upper-class trullo living in the 18th and 19th centuries. From outside, its multiple domes and striking size set it apart; inside, a sequence of rooms situated around a central core features traditional furnishings, iron beds, wooden chests, rustic kitchen implements, and religious images, recreating authentic domestic life. Informative panels (many in several languages) explain trulli history and construction. A narrow staircase leads to the upper floor, providing new vantage points and views of Alberobello’s famous rooftops. Compact and manageable, the museum makes for a rewarding short visit where you can linger over details like rooftop inscriptions or carved ornaments. It’s engaging for families: children especially enjoy the sense of a ‘fairytale’ house. Located just outside the busiest tourist lanes, Trullo Sovrano is a good start or end to exploring Alberobello’s historic districts. Admission is inexpensive and sold directly at the door; as hours sometimes change for seasons or local events, a quick check of the official website before visiting is recommended.
