The simplest way to get suitcases from Amalfi to a Ravello hotel is a pre-booked taxi or private transfer, followed by a hotel-arranged porter if the property sits beyond the vehicle-accessible streets. The direct SITA Sud bus is far cheaper, but large bags depend on luggage-compartment space and you may still have a pedestrian final leg after getting off in Ravello. A porter is mainly the solution for that last stretch, not a substitute for transport up the mountain.
For a Ravello luggage transfer, choose the bus only when you can handle your own cases and have time to wait. Choose a taxi when you have full-size luggage, children, limited mobility, a tight check-in time or a late arrival. If your accommodation is reached by pedestrian lanes or steps, arrange the porter with the property before leaving Amalfi.
Which option makes sense with your bags?
- Small backpack or cabin case: the SITA bus is usually the sensible choice.
- One or more full-size suitcases: a taxi or pre-booked driver removes the most awkward part of the transfer.
- Hotel on a pedestrian lane: book the taxi and porter as two connected parts of the same arrival.
- Bus on a tight budget: ask the hotel to meet you or collect the luggage at the Ravello bus stop rather than dragging cases through town.
- Stroller, mobility limitation or several family bags: confirm the exact vehicle drop-off with the hotel before booking anything.
Porter service: useful in Ravello, not for the road from Amalfi
The important distinction is between transporting luggage to Ravello and moving it through Ravello after arrival. The first part needs a bus, taxi or private vehicle. A porter, known as a facchino, facchinaggio or servizio bagagli, is most useful once you reach the town.
Ravello’s historic centre contains restricted-traffic streets, pedestrian lanes and properties whose entrances cannot be reached directly by an ordinary car. Some accommodation providers operate their own porter service, while others arrange an outside luggage service. Hours and prices are property-specific. Some hotels have defined daytime porter hours; others require the service to be requested in advance.
Do not arrive at Amalfi’s waterfront assuming that a porter there will automatically take a suitcase all the way to your Ravello room. Contact your accommodation and ask three specific questions:
- Where will the porter meet us?
- Can the porter meet the SITA bus, or only a taxi/private transfer?
- How late is luggage collection available on our arrival date?
The useful Italian phrase is “Dove ci incontra il facchino per i bagagli?”, meaning “Where does the luggage porter meet us?”
Taxi or private transfer from Amalfi
A taxi is the least complicated choice with normal holiday luggage. If you arrive in Amalfi by ferry, arrange the driver to meet you on the road side of the harbour area rather than expecting a car at the boat itself. Give the company your ferry arrival time, number of passengers, number of cases and the full name of the Ravello accommodation.
Do not book simply to “Ravello” and assume that means the reception desk. Vehicle access depends on the address and on Ravello’s ZTL rules. The municipality currently regulates taxi and NCC, or noleggio con conducente, passenger drop-offs through its Ravello ZetaPass system. Permitted drop-off areas include locations around Via Boccaccio and other authorised zones, so your hotel and driver should agree on the most useful one.
Ask for the total fare before departure rather than relying on a generic online estimate. Also ask whether porterage from the vehicle to reception is included. “Door to door” can mean “as close as a licensed vehicle is permitted to go,” which is not necessarily the bedroom door in Ravello.
Taking the SITA bus with luggage

SITA Sud operates line 5110 between Amalfi, Ravello and Scala. In Amalfi, departures for Ravello use the bus area at Piazza Flavio Gioia 1. SITA itself identifies the shelter there as the departure point for Ravello/Pogerola services.
Use the operator’s current Scala-Ravello-Amalfi timetable on the day of travel. Timetables change seasonally, and individual columns can apply only on certain days. On SITA schedules, common codes include F for Monday to Saturday working days, H for Sundays and public holidays, and G for services running every day. Do not assume every departure printed across the page runs on Sunday.
What SITA actually allows you to carry
Under the current SITA Sud Campania baggage conditions, hand luggage up to 50 x 30 x 25 cm can travel free when it can be kept without obstructing other passengers. Larger baggage requires a separate baggage ticket and must be placed in the luggage compartment by the passenger, subject to available space and vehicle capacity. SITA’s Campania FAQ currently lists the baggage ticket at €1.50.
That last condition matters in summer. Having a passenger ticket does not turn the luggage hold into reserved suitcase space. If the bus is very busy or the compartment is already full, a large case can make the journey considerably less predictable.
Step by step from Amalfi
- Reach Piazza Flavio Gioia with enough time to find the correct Ravello/Scala departure rather than joining whichever bus queue looks longest.
- Have your passenger ticket and any required luggage ticket ready before boarding. SITA participates in the UnicoCampania system; current ticket information is on the official SITA ticket page.
- Tell the driver you have a suitcase for the luggage compartment before climbing aboard.
- Place the case in the indicated compartment yourself. Keep passport, wallet, medicines, electronics and other valuables with you.
- Validate your ticket when boarding as required. Do not wait for an inspector to tell you that it should already have been validated.
- Get off at Ravello and retrieve the case before walking away from the bus.
Starting at Amalfi is an advantage because it is the terminus for this direction, but it does not guarantee a seat. On a busy day, leave slack in the schedule rather than planning a hotel check-in, restaurant booking or onward appointment immediately after the published arrival time.
Where the bus leaves you in Ravello

The public bus does not deposit passengers in the middle of Piazza Duomo. Ravello’s municipal traffic rules place the line-bus stop in the Largo Boccaccio/Via Giovanni Boccaccio area beside the bus manoeuvring space, near the tunnel leading toward the central pedestrian area.
This is the moment when your hotel’s exact location becomes more important than the words “Ravello centre.” One property may be an uncomplicated walk from the stop; another may involve cobbles, slopes or steps. If the accommodation has offered luggage collection, confirm that the porter is meeting you at Largo Boccaccio, not vaguely “in the square.”
The same municipal traffic regulations provide designated short-stay luggage loading and unloading spaces in the Via Boccaccio area for hotel guests. That is one reason a coordinated hotel porter or authorised driver works much better than improvising after arrival.
What to do when a bus is too crowded
Do not build a critical connection around catching one particular bus with a large suitcase. If you cannot board, the practical choices are to wait for the next suitable service or move to a taxi before the queue becomes even larger.
If two people are travelling together, keep everyone and all bags together until you know how the driver wants the luggage loaded. Do not send one person onto the bus while the other is still standing beside an open luggage compartment unless you are certain boarding has not finished.
For a longer Amalfi Coast trip, you can use the Italy on Foot trip planner to place this transfer between your ferry, hotel check-in and later transport rather than treating each connection as an isolated timetable.
Late ferry arrivals and evening check-ins
A late arrival changes the calculation. Bus frequencies vary by season and day type, while hotel porter services may finish earlier than the last transport connection. Check both before choosing an evening ferry into Amalfi.
If the ferry is delayed past your intended bus, first check the live SITA timetable and service notices. If there is still a later Ravello service, message the accommodation with the revised arrival time. If there is no useful bus, arrange a taxi and tell the hotel exactly where the driver expects to leave you.
If the hotel’s porter has finished for the night, a taxi does not automatically solve the final pedestrian section. Ask reception to confirm either an accessible drop-off, someone who can meet the vehicle, or a safe place to hold the luggage until staff can assist.
Suitcases, strollers and reduced mobility
With a stroller plus a large case, the bus is possible but usually cumbersome because you need to manage boarding, luggage storage and the final walk at the same time. A taxi followed by pre-arranged luggage assistance is considerably easier.
Travelers with reduced mobility should ask the accommodation about the route from the authorised vehicle drop-off to the actual room. “Accessible by taxi” and “step-free to reception” are not the same statement in a hillside town. Ask about steps, gradients, lifts and the closest permitted vehicle stop rather than relying on a map pin.
If mobility is the reason you are considering a rental car instead, check the wider access and parking trade-offs in Amalfi Coast: With a Car vs No Car. Bringing a car does not remove Ravello’s restricted-access streets.
The arrangement least likely to go wrong
Send your Ravello accommodation your arrival date, estimated time in Amalfi, transport method and number of bags before the trip. Ask for the exact meeting point in writing. If they recommend a taxi, ask whether they can book it. If they recommend the bus, ask whether a porter can meet line 5110 at Largo Boccaccio.
For one light case in daylight, the bus keeps the journey cheap and straightforward. For several suitcases or an accommodation reached by pedestrian streets, treat the journey as two linked jobs: a vehicle from Amalfi to the closest legal drop-off, then a pre-arranged luggage service for the final stretch. That avoids discovering Ravello’s stairs while holding 23 kilograms of suitcase.
