Sitting atop the Capitoline Hill on a square redesigned by Michelangelo, the Capitoline Museums are often called the world’s first public museum. The collections span ancient sculpture, Renaissance and Baroque painting, coins and epigraphy, but the atmosphere is just as memorable as the objects. Inside the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo you encounter iconic works like the bronze Capitoline She-Wolf, the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and an extraordinary array of Roman portrait busts. Corridors and staircases open onto windows framing the Roman Forum below, giving you a literal and symbolic view over the layers of Rome’s history. Labels are improving but can still feel sparse, so many visitors benefit from an audio guide or short introduction beforehand. Because the museums are less hectic than the Colosseum or Vatican, they make an excellent half-day for travelers who want to deepen their sense of ancient Rome without fighting huge crowds.
