For most travelers with a suitcase and a hotel in central Catania, the Alibus is the simpler choice. It leaves from the airport and runs through the city without making you transfer between terminal, shuttle and train platform. The train is much faster once you are actually on board, but Catania airport to centre by rail starts with a separate 600-metre walk or airport-station shuttle and ends at Catania Centrale, not in the heart of the historic centre.
Which one should you take?
- Choose Alibus for Via Etnea, Stesicoro, most central hotels, a full-size suitcase, a late evening arrival, or simply the fewest luggage moves.
- Choose the train if your accommodation is near Catania Centrale, you are already comfortable managing bags through a station, or your train timing happens to line up well.
- Do not choose by journey time alone. The rail ride can take only a few minutes, but getting from the terminal to Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa station is an extra stage.
The biggest source of confusion is the word “airport” in the rail-station name. Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa is not inside the airport terminal. Catania Centrale is also not the same thing as Piazza del Duomo or the historic centre.
Taking the Alibus from Catania Airport
AMTS operates the dedicated Alibus airport service. The current fare is €4, and the ticket is valid for 90 minutes on the Alibus and other AMTS urban lines. An ordinary AMTS 90-minute ticket, day ticket or standard city pass is not valid for boarding the Alibus.
From Arrivals, follow the signs for buses and look specifically for ALIBUS. AMTS lists the airport terminus in the forecourt by the old terminal building. Do not assume that every bus waiting outside goes into central Catania because the airport also has regional coaches for other Sicilian destinations.
Buying and validating the ticket
You can buy the €4 Alibus ticket on board, through the AMTS ticketing app, or through authorised sellers. AMTS states that tickets sold electronically on board are automatically validated. Tickets bought before boarding must be validated on the bus, using the onboard validator.
This distinction matters after a flight, when it is easy to buy a ticket at a machine and then forget the second step. Keep the ticket or the electronic record available until you have finished the journey.
Where to get off
The Alibus runs as a city loop rather than a simple airport-to-one-square shuttle. Useful stops on the official route include Stazione Centrale, Via Etnea, Piazza Stesicoro, Via Vittorio Emanuele and the lower historic-centre area around San Placido and Via Dusmet.
If your hotel is close to the railway station, get off at Stazione Centrale. AMTS currently schedules the bus to pass there about 15 minutes after leaving the airport. For accommodation around Via Etnea or the upper historic centre, Stesicoro is usually the more useful reference point.
For a hotel close to Piazza del Duomo, do not automatically jump off at Centrale just because it says “central.” Check your hotel against the current Alibus stop list. Because the service loops through several parts of the city, the stop physically closest to your hotel may occur later in the circuit.
How often does the Alibus run?
The current AMTS timetable starts from the airport at 04:40 and finishes at 00:30. In the main part of the day, departures are often about 18 to 25 minutes apart, with wider gaps early and late. AMTS currently publishes the same airport departure schedule for working days and holidays, although temporary changes are always possible.
Traffic is the variable. The 15-minute timing to Catania Centrale is the published schedule, not a guarantee that the roads will cooperate. For a hotel farther along the city loop, allow more time.
Taking the train from Catania Airport
The train looks dramatically faster on a journey planner because the actual rail trip from Fontanarossa station to Catania Centrale can be very short. The catch is reaching the station with your bags. The rail ticket is separate from the €1 airport-station shuttle unless you buy the combined connection described below.
The airport states that the railway station is about 600 metres from the terminal. You have two choices:
- Walk: follow the signed pedestrian route to Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa station.
- Take the airport-station shuttle: the AMTS shuttle runs about every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 22:40 and costs €1.
With only a backpack, the walk can make sense. With a large roller case, several bags, a stroller or tired children, the shuttle usually makes the rail option more realistic, but you still have another boarding and unloading step before the train.
The ticket-name trap
The airport gives a particularly useful warning: if you want the combined train-and-shuttle journey, select “Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa Bus” when buying through Trenitalia. A ticket showing only “Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa” does not include the airport-station shuttle.
You can check the airport’s current explanation of the connection on its official train page. This is one of those small naming differences that becomes very obvious only when you are standing outside Arrivals with two suitcases.
How fast is the train?
Once on board, the rail leg is excellent. Current RFI schedules show journeys to Catania Centrale taking roughly 6 to 12 minutes, depending on the service. Trenitalia currently lists airport-station departures for Catania from about 06:04 to 22:42, but the gaps are not as regular as an airport metro and individual trains can have day-of-week restrictions.
Check the exact date and departure on Trenitalia’s Catania airport connection page rather than assuming there will be a train immediately after you collect your luggage.
Platforms and accessibility with bags
Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa has two passenger platforms. RFI lists a barrier-free route to platform 1 and lift access to platform 2. It also marks the station as without staffed assistance for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility. If lift availability or physical assistance is critical to your trip, check the RFI station accessibility page before relying on this transfer.
On the train, you carry your luggage aboard yourself and should keep it clear of doors and aisles. The practical disadvantage is not the train ride. It is the sequence: terminal, walk or shuttle, station, platform, train, then possibly another walk or local transfer after Catania Centrale.
Do you need to validate the train ticket?
Ticket type matters. Trenitalia’s current Digital Regional Ticket is automatically validated at the scheduled departure time of the selected train. A traditional paper regional ticket must be validated in a station machine before boarding. If you buy an integrated bus-and-train product, follow the instructions shown on that specific ticket rather than applying the paper-ticket rule automatically.
Catania Centrale is not the historic centre
This is the main reason the train does not automatically beat the bus. Catania Centrale is useful for onward rail travel and hotels near Piazza Giovanni XXIII, but many visitors are staying farther west around Via Etnea, Stesicoro, Piazza Università or Piazza del Duomo.
If your hotel is near the Duomo, taking the train can mean handling your bags three times and then still needing another city bus, taxi or walk. The Alibus can often remove one or two of those stages.
If Catania is only the first stop in a longer Sicily trip, it can help to build your Italy itinerary around the actual station and airport transfers rather than treating every “Catania” point as interchangeable.
With a large suitcase, the simpler option usually wins
A suitcase changes the decision more than the rail timetable does. One rolling bag on a flat station concourse is easy. The same bag becomes irritating when you have to leave Arrivals, find a shuttle, unload at the railway stop, reach the correct platform, board a regional train and then move again after Centrale.
For most central hotels, Alibus is therefore the lower-effort option. You board once and keep your bag with you until the stop nearest your accommodation. The train makes more sense when the station itself is your destination or when the rail departure lines up so neatly that the extra transfer does not matter.
If you are carrying unusually large luggage, sports equipment or several cases per person, check the current passenger rules on the AMTS downloads page before travel. The Alibus is the dedicated airport service, but that does not mean every size or quantity of baggage is automatically accepted without conditions.
Early arrivals and late-night flights
The Alibus has a clear advantage at the edges of the day. Its current airport schedule begins at 04:40, while Trenitalia lists the first rail connection from Fontanarossa station toward Catania at about 06:04.
Late at night, the difference is even more useful. The airport-station shuttle finishes at 22:40 and the listed rail service toward Catania ends shortly afterward, around 22:42. Alibus continues until 00:30.
That means a flight landing around 22:00 or later is usually a poor time to build a plan around the train, especially if you have checked luggage. A delayed belt or a slow walk to the station can erase the time advantage immediately.
If you miss the last Alibus, use an authorised taxi from the rank outside Arrivals. The airport advises travelers to use the official white taxis with a roof “TAXI” sign and licence number rather than accepting rides offered by unlicensed drivers inside or outside the terminal. Common mistakes and how to recover
- You walk toward the railway station, then realise the next train is not soon. Go back only if the timing makes sense. Otherwise use the airport-station shuttle to return to the terminal area and take Alibus.
- You bought “Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa” but expected the shuttle to be included. The airport says the shuttle is included only when the bus connection is explicitly part of the ticket. Buy the separate €1 shuttle ticket if needed.
- You get off the Alibus at Centrale but your hotel is near the Duomo. You are not stranded, but you have created an unnecessary final transfer. Check the exact hotel location before choosing your stop.
- You bought an AMTS ticket before boarding and forgot to validate it. Validate it immediately on the bus. Tickets bought electronically on board are the exception because they are already activated at purchase.
- You arrive after the rail connection has effectively finished for the night. Do not waste time walking to Fontanarossa station. Use Alibus if it is still running, otherwise go to the authorised taxi rank.
A simple decision rule
Hotel near Catania Centrale: take the train if a departure is conveniently timed and you do not mind the terminal-to-station transfer.
Hotel near Via Etnea, Stesicoro or the historic centre: take Alibus unless there is a specific reason to use the railway.
Heavy luggage, children or several bags: favour the option with fewer transfers, which is usually Alibus.
Arrival after about 22:00: treat Alibus as the main public-transport plan. After its last departure at 00:30, use an authorised taxi.
Continuing directly to another Sicilian city by rail: do not go into Catania Centrale automatically. Fontanarossa station has direct regional connections toward destinations including Taormina, Siracusa and Messina, so the airport rail stop may save you a completely unnecessary trip into town.
