On a ridge just outside Agrigento, the Valley of the Temples preserves one of the best ensembles of ancient Greek temples anywhere in the Mediterranean. Despite the name, the UNESCO-listed site is more a hilltop than a valley, lined with sanctuaries that once formed the sacred outskirts of classical Akragas. The Temple of Concordia is famously well preserved, while the Temples of Juno, Heracles and Zeus survive as evocative ruins and rebuilt columns. Paths connect the monuments through olive groves and almond trees, with sweeping views over the coastal plain and sea. Signage gives historical context, and an on-site archaeological museum (requiring a separate or combined ticket) houses statues, pottery and architectural fragments. Distances can be longer than they appear on the map, and there is little shade, so a hat, sunscreen and water are essential. Many travelers aim for late afternoon and stay through sunset, when the temples glow gold against a darkening sky and floodlights come on.
