Turin’s Museo Egizio is the world’s oldest museum devoted entirely to ancient Egypt and is widely considered second only to Cairo in the breadth of its collection. Galleries follow the arc of Egyptian history, from the Old Kingdom through the Ptolemaic period, with an exceptional array of statues, sarcophagi, papyri and everyday objects. Highlights include the statuary hall with monumental figures lit dramatically in a darkened space, the reconstructed tomb of Kha and Merit with its intact grave goods, and beautifully preserved painted coffins. Exhibits are accompanied by modern multilingual labels and optional audio guides that make the material accessible even if you arrive with little prior knowledge. Because the museum uses timed tickets, advance booking is recommended, especially on weekends or rainy days when it can be very popular. Allow at least two to three hours for a satisfying visit; enthusiasts could easily spend longer.
